I am from Ghana, West Africa and visited Salvador de Bahía last year for the first time. You can absolutely see the West African influence in the food and culture. They have preserved it so well, that everything reminded me of home. A huge part of the food is basically the same just with different names and some dishes have a little bit of a twist to them.
We’re proud of our roots and our connection to West African countries! We’re the same in the heart and I just love that we all relate to each other like this

It's very interesting for me. Although in USA you can find many restaurants from different nationalities in the world but when you think about the national food of US you see it's just a fast food or something like that which can we say it's a some kind of Anglo Germanic food. While in Brazil and other Latin American countries beside of Spanish Portuguese foods, African, native Americans foods and... are accepted as Brazilian food. ❣️ I like Latin America.

This is just incredible, I am Igbo from Nigeria and the Acaraje in my country is called Akara in the south and in the north Kose, here we fry it with groundnut or peanut oil and the Abara like shown here in steamed in plant leaves, here at home in Nigeria we have the same dish, black-eye peas or beans pudding wrapped in leaves or in pockets made out of foil or thick polythene bags then steamed, it's popularly called Moi Moi or Olele in the South East of my country where I come from. Most of our soups in the southern part of my country is cooked with Palm Oil.
@@c.varela Hello Caio Acaraje is a West African bean cake that originated from West Africa particularly Nigeria, Ghana, Benin and Togo which are all Neighboring countries. It was brought to Brazil by the Africans and that is why Acaraje is mostly common in Bahia which is a state in Brazil that has managed to retain lot of African culture in their food, religion, tradition and lots more. There is no question about the origin of Acaraje.

Predominância africana dependendo do lugar, no sul existe predominância europeia, ao norte existe a predominância indigena. Então nada é predominante nesse país.

Every diaspora preserved African cuisine, Jamaicans, Haitians, Caribbean and more, but nothing like the people of Bahia-Salvador, they even preserved the original names, and did not forget the palm oil.

Brazil goes far beyond what you see in videos. These places are cultural and simple. But there are more modern and futuristic places, cities in the interior, cold cities similar to the European climate, such as Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, the city of Gramado that resembles German architecture. Come meet Brazil. It is a country blessed by God. You will be surprised.

I'm visiting Bahia this September , I've heard a lot about the Food , it's cooked totally different from the mainstream Brazilian food. I heard also about the beautiful beaches. I'm so excited and I can't wait :-P......greetings from the Philippines.
So jealous! I'm from the Philippines, too, and has been curious about Brazil because there are a lot of similarities with the culture, place, and food. Brazilians and Filipinos love consuming avocados as dessert/shake for example. :)

Mark, I've been a fan of yours for a few years now. I turned on most of my friends and family to your channel and it has become a great bonding point for us all as we group together to be taken wherever it is that you'll take us next. All of your content since day one has been absolutely stellar and done to a level that I've never seen before (that's including countless shows/documentaries broadcasted on television). You are the king of travel, food, and bridging the gap among us all- your mission is so much larger than 'just' food, whether you realize it or not (though food definitely brings us all together). While everything you've ever presented us has been A+, this Brazil series was just on a whole other level to anything else I've ever seen, be it from you or anyone else! The Brazil series was so incredibly immersive, it felt like we were all there with you, and that's why I'm so sad to now learn that this was the last episode- I wanted more, so much more! But you have done Brazil justice and shown us places and things we'd never of had the chance to see otherwise. I am an infinitely richer person thanks to you. While my sense of wanderlust has always been immense, you took it to a whole other level and gave me the much-needed drive to actually realize all my travel dreams. Material possessions are worthless in the face of such rich and varied experiences as the ones you get to make daily on your travels. This is bittersweet for me as through this series I found myself especially attached to the all encompassing beauty of Brazil... first and foremost, the magical people who could teach us all a masterclass in hospitality... of course then the immense natural beauty of this beautiful land, the rich and storied culture and history, and last but not least the incredibly unique and vibrant foods. I've watched all your previous videos, but have never felt such a deep connection to a place as I have with Brazil. I'm a 29 year old caucasian male living in Canada- a world away-, yet your video and the beauty of Brazil made me feel like I belong there more than anywhere else. It's always been a dream of mine to go to Rio- mainly because that's the place most heavily advertised here-, but now I see I absolutely need to see so many other places in that amazing country. Rio alone doesn't come close to showing all that this heavenly place has to offer. Life isn't so easy right now, but one of my number one priorities has now become to travel to Brazil as soon as I can afford it. I have other places to visit this year, but I will approach them with a new point of view and always be sure to go exploring the roads less travelled in search of authentic experiences that'll stay with me until the day I die. I can't wait to tag along with you wherever you take us next. You're doing something bigger than all of us. Thank you and safe travels.
Yeah man. He’s doing the Lords work for sure. I even started trying all the other African restaurants here in Johannesburg, something that I would not have done. So far so good 👍🏿
You said it all for all of us. Thank you and thank you - Mark! I tell people to check out your videos. You're doing an incredible job to bring the world together. Some of us don't comment all the time but this post has said it for all of us. May God continue to bless you, Ying, Micah, Joe, and your entire family and the friends who help you in various places! Obrigado! 🙏🏽😊
you will be welcome here bro. There is places in the USA with a significante brazilian community, so u can find some brazilians restaurants there, check it out.

Brazilians are way more humble and beautiful than what I had initially imagined... Thank you Mark Wiens for showing this beautiful side of Brazil to the rest of the world. I also have recorded some street food videos from Brazil as well.
This video makes me so emotional! I love Bahia! Been there 4 times. I would go every year, but I gotta see the rest of this beautiful world. I miss the place everyday. The people, food are top notch. The beaches, culture and vibe is unmatched. It feels like home there. Great video, Mark. Glad you had an amazing time.
Cow foot stew we make in Jamaica too 🇯🇲. Our African ancestors preserved the West African cuisine the best way they could during slavery. In the Caribbeans and South America, the West African influence is evident and such a wonderful contribution to culture and food in those regions.
@Purple Haze ik. thanks for the care too. yeah i've been thinking about it and had two theories: 1-that theres a bad alcohol distributor that's selling fake liquor (wood liquor) to the hotels. but that doesn't make much sense bks other ppl not just tourist would be dying. 2- my friend mother, who is deeply informed on dr current events due to her political involvement in the island and here, that Haitians who worked at the hotels maybe poisoning the tourist as retaliation towards what the dr is doing to them with their citizenship status and the overall unfairness and conflict. she says this has happened in the past. within the resorts the majority of the staff is Haitians working in poor conditions with little pay. those are just theories. they really gotta get to the bottom of this. i love my land and my fellow siblings Haitians
Some of the food is similar to what is eaten in Nigeria: Dende = Palm oil Akaralaje= Akara or kosai Apara= Moimoi/Alele although it is eaten in reverse as a filling and not as the bun Caruru = okro soup Beans porridge looks exactly as the one served in Nigeria Even the herb section is found in markets
Bahia is the home of a Yoruba tribe that still speaks the old Yoruba tongue actually. So that's why you will see a lot of the ancient culture there. You should do some reading up on them online - you'll be surprised! Other way around, we also have a "Brazilian Quarter" in Lagos due to the return of the "Agudas" i.e. freed slaves from Brazil. Interesting stuff!
@@Maurimaxxx speak for yourself. That's a lie. I'm Brazilian and I'm not mixed neither is most of my family. We're all black and we are very very proud of it and intend to keep it that way. This 'Brazil is all mixed' is a lie told by white people to disguise all the racism there is in here.

@Justin Rubondo People were captured and brought from many different places along the entire west coast of Africa from Sierra Leone all the way south, and even some people from the eastern side of the continent. Many black people in the Americas have west African DNA (Wolof, Yoruba, Igbo, Mende, Dahomey... the list is long!) along with DNA from Cameroon, Congo, Angola, even Mozambique and Madagascar, and a lot of intermixing happened between all the groups that arrived.

I also prefer Akara that is fried with palm oil.
Some people say that "acarajé" comes from "akara je", with "je" meaning "to eat" or something close to it - I just don't remember in which language.
@@napoleonokugbe2406 Hi, I know it. I was just trying to explain why it is called "akara" originally, but "acarajé" in Bahia.

Mark,
I've been a fan of yours for a few years now.
🇧🇷♥️

Apara= Moimoi/Alele although it is eaten in reverse as a filling and not as the bun
Caruru = okro soup

Even the herb section is found in markets
not is "aPara", is "aBara" ......
And?
Same in South Africa
It must be that slaves that were caught in Africa many years ago took with them the recipes and adapted them to Brazil...amazing.
