- Bethesda celebrated this year's Anniversary of Elder Scrolls by giving away The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind for free until March 31 on Bethesda.net with “TES25TH-MORROWIND” in their game code redemption box. Because of that fact we have a new influx of players whom are asking me about mods and what I currently use.
I did do a Modernizing Morrowind video a while back, but that's not what I currently use and isn't nearly as stable as any loadouts using the OpenMW engine, the Open Morrowind engine is as the name suggests an Open Source engine and allows for Multiplayer.

@@Zhakaron I like to look at that as a no risk and big reward challenge. At level 1 with no money selling his grear helps a lot. Its a bad luck if you are doing a speed run or 1 life run tho.
I've only played Skyrim but have watched videos for all of the other elder scrolls games, from those videos, I liked Morrowind more than Skyrim.
I'll never forget Bonecrusha, my most successful Morrowind character. An Orc warrior specializing in Axes and Heavy Armor, once he got a full Daedric set he was basically unstoppable. He cut a glorious bloody swathe through his foes until he finally met his end facing an enemy he couldn't defeat; corrupted save files.
Thank the Divines OpenMW exists now. Perhaps it's time for a successor to take up Bonecrusha's legacy...

i still don't understand why people use OpenMW (many mods don't work with it), i think the reason is crashing in MODERN PCs, i have a potato so that's why i have no problems playing "normal" morrowind with tons of mods.
@@strongindependentblackwoma1887 I use OpenMW because I now play on Linux and the vanilla engine has a tendency to crash whenever I minimise it.
Load times are greatly reduced, the graphics are really nice, even without any replacement mods and it hasn't crashed on me once. Unlike the vanilla engine which has crashed on me countless times, even on WIndows on a PC from the time it came out.
And let's not forget that OpenMW opens the possibility of multiplayer.
A great many mods work with OpenMW. At least all the ones I'm really interested in: Tamriel Rebuilt, Uvirith's Legacy, Building up Uvirith's Legacy and Rise of House Telvanni. (Plus some other minor mods not worth mentioning)
It doesn't have the script extender _yet_, as that is technically not Morrowind and therefore not something to be implemented before 1.0. Once they do put their seal of approval on it and decide to release 1.0, though, we will probably get something even greater than MWSE. Whether there will be compatibility with MWSE will remain to be seen, but I am hopeful. (Even if none of the mods I use require it. UL needs MWSE for some things, but they actually work fine in OpenMW, even without MWSE support)
Orcs are still my favorite characters to make. My Orc was called Gothmog.
Morrowind Code Patch prevents save game corruption as far as I know
Some tips from me:
1. ALWAYS use the weapon type you have the most skill points into. Beside some complex calculations, in a nutshell amount of skill you have in weapon skill, that is percentage chance for you to land a hit. Using weapon type you are unskilled with, you will just swing in the air and waste stamina unless you buy it at trainers later.
2. Crossbows and bows are very powerful in early game but they falloff quite a bit later. And they cost extra due to ammunition.
3. If you are not a spellcaster, always have some backup weapon that is made from silver, daedric or enchanted. Some enemies are resistant or even immune to normal weapons, like ghosts.
4. A lot of critters and some random bandits use Paralysis spells and enchantments. Brew or buy cure paralysis potions otherwise you can get a bad time.
5. You can equip shield and 2h weapon at the same time and shield's armor rating and/or constant enchantments will still affect you (I think its fixed in either rebirth or openWM)
6. Tree stumps shown on video often have some gold coins or items in them.
7. Unlike later games, you can't become master in all of organisations - some require murdering each other.
8. Like in later games, you can soultrap your own summons.
9. Tribunal is meant to be played after you finish the main quest, otherwise it will be really hard and some dialogues will make no sense at all. DB Attack Delay is REAALLY handy, trust me.
10. Security skill is mostly just for disarming traps with probes. At some point game will shower you with Open Lock 100pts scrolls.
11. Telvanii cities require Levitation spell to navigate. You need to fly like a normal person would do to navigate a mage's tower.
12. Train some points in short blade and blunt or learn Fortify Attack spell. You will thank me later after the last quest in the main story.
Extra tip:
There are no essential immortal characters, it is very much possible to break the main questline by killing someone important, if you do the game warns you to load an earlier save from before they die... lesson to learn: save often

If you always run out of magicka, just create a spell that lowers your own intelligence all the way down for one second. Your magicka fills back up instantly.
I tend to use mods that add a slow magicka regen akin to the later games. I know I could just rest, but spellcasting is so gloriously OP in Morrowind that I find it almost a necessity to set personal handicaps.

You can combo that with the Atronach sign to still get x2.0 INT added to your magicka pool while being able to regenerate it - and virtually instantaneously too.

There IS one thing to know about the Dark Brotherhood attack. The bedroll in the Census and Excise office, where the game starts you (without changing it due to a mod that is), will never ever allow the assassin to spawn if you sleep there. It's not the 'best' option, but it is 'an' option all the same.

You can also turn off the .esm in the launcher until you complete the main quest, that way you can experience the expansion (and surprise attack) as intended.

I guess I'm not likely to see any better armor then this brotherhood gear until i make it to the expansion content? I'm too weak to voluntarily avoid using it but wish i was able to enjoy some normal gear upgrading.

A decade and a half, thousands of hours time played, know of practically every exploit in the game and only now do I learn about sticking the map to the play screen :(

Nice Guide. :) But the Lover Sign damages your Fatigue as a little Drawback to make this Sign a little less Powerfull, not the Enemies Fatigue.

Don't forget that gender has an impact too on your stats. A female Nord may make a better battlemage than a male Nord due to extra Willpower etc. A neat feature that Skyrim of course gutted.

You don't need Delayed DB Attack because Patch for Purists delays it until level 6 (just like on Xbox version).
I would also add Morrowind Optimization Patch on the recommended mods list because it gives massive fps boost and fixes a bunch of broken meshes.

@Schizoid i think he meant ultimate freedom because you can do literally anything, no one requires you to do anything at any time (like in skyrim, helgen serves as tutorial stage, as well as in oblivion, daggerfall), even you can break the main quest itself because no NPC is essential.

I missed seeing some Zaric Morrowind vids. Its what always gets me in the mood.
Morrowind is a completely different beast then what im used to I think this open source project may help me actually complete a playthrough since corrupting saves is what keeps me from doing so

I once had the assassin attack me on the boat in seeyda neen right after the first convo with the guards and Juib I had to run around the boat waiting for The guards to kill him as I was a faceless genderless entity at the time 😂
Sky Dome you can press the ~ key (button beside 1 key) and use console commands. If you want god mode just type in tgm
Watch out for god mode though because it messes with some quests and abilities. I would leave it off until you get into a difficult fight, pause the action, toggle god mode, then toggle it off after the fight. Alternatively, just turn the difficulty down and play in easy mode, which has no risk of breaking anything.

400 hours logged on steam and god knows how much on OpenMW and I had no idea clicking the x icons kept menus open during gameplay.
Thanks a lot. Got it from the 25 years free download (must also have the CD somewhere in the attic ^^). But was confused as to which mods i should use (to enhance graphics a bit and gaming experience.) you answered most of my questions. ^^
Thanks for this video, this is officially the furthest/most progress I've made in Morrowind. Usually always quit in frustration in about 30mins or so. Looks like it just may stick this round.
Hey I followed this guide a few weeks ago and just came back to post I finished the MW main quest for the first time. I'll finish up Mage's Guild and Imperial Cult and then I;ll move onto Tribunal and Bloodmoon, thanks for the guide!
Im playing openWM 0.43 android version in what i call Morrowind Mobile. For 8 months on my phone. And most Nexus mods for morrowind works as well...
The best thing about Morrowind is the lack of item level scaling. You can wander into a ruin, have a brutally difficult fight and walk away with a top tier magic item. This makes exploration really rewarding, PARTICULARLY IF YOU DON’T USE SPOILERS.
I didn't know the game was out for free a for a while so this is news to me but I hope all of these new players found it fun and weren't thrown off by the difficulty curve of first starting out.
Im getting so much fun playing this game (yes my first Elder Scrolls was Skyrim) was hard to get used to the controls but once I got used to it I found it very intuitive in fact
There isn't much of a difficulty curve, I started playing at difficulty 100 and had a great time.
A girl messaged me on the dating app Hinge. I wasn't particularly interested in her, so I responded with a good old fashion Morrowind Imperial Guard quote: "I've trifled with you long enough!". Well she responded and kept persisting on going out for a drink. I'm thinking about hitting her with: "This is pointless! Give in!". Another guard quote. Who would have thought Morrowind was a good source for pick-up lines.

The Lover does not damage the enemy's fatigue, it costs 200 fatigue to cast.
The Lady is a pretty powerful birthsign imo, and the atronach can be interesting, and gets really powerful with alchemy even without cheesing INTpots.
I love the fact that you're wearing a suit and tie for the video. Very classy.

Glad you've made this new, essentially, update to the old Morrowind modding guide. Tried following it but of course a lot of those mods expired or have changed, as you put in the description.
That's just what I needed, thank you! Oblivion's still my #1 favorite game, now it's time for me to find out what Morrowind was all about.

I wish I knew about Delay Dark Brotherhood... Took me a while, but I got him to follow me to a bridge and put enough space between him and me and pelted him with lots of iron arrows until I could finally kill him. Stole his armor. Felt better after stealing the armor at level 2 or 3 or whatever.
I just buy Frostbite and sleep at level 1 until he shows up. 2 or 3 successful casts of Frostbite will kill the early assassins every time, and the gear is worth thousands. You can max your level (and all stats) doing nothing but killing assassins and visiting trainers.
@Justin B Yeah, there are plenty of ways to break the game but they do take the fun out a bit. I generally only do it for the money to train Endurance skills, because my non-combat guys don't use those skills and I still want my +5 on level up. Easiest to get the gear at level 1 and then sell it when it's time for level up.
As a kid playing this on the original XBox, I remember I wouldn't get dark brotherhood attacks until level 6. Not sure if the level 6 requirement was accurate, but that's what I went with. It was quite a shock to see them attack immediately on PC.
I remember probably 6 or 7 years ago I got into this game again with the hopes of traveling as quickly as possible by foot. Well, getting ridiculous speed helps a lot, but if you really want to travel fast, acrobatics is where it's at. I got to somewhere in the 700s acrobatics skill with 100 base, several hundred from enchanted armors and turning into a vampire with the acrobatics skill multiplier. It was completely impractical because one, you jump over entire towns with that much acrobatics, and two, you need to have some pretty heavy armor to accomplish that high of a number, so you really can't manipulate where you go (due to the way weight and jumping momentum works). Oh, also, being a vampire kind of sucks. But you can pretty easily get 200-400 Acrobatics skill and still travel extremely quickly while keeping things relatively practical. Just one of the things I found incredibly fun in this game.
Will definitely give these mods a try tho. A problem I have with OpenMW is last time I looked any kind of graphic overhaul was segmented into hundreds of different mods. Kind of a pain in the ass, really. Is there any graphics mods that are simple for OpenMW? I'll continue my search.

Love your vids, informative for old and new players. I myself bought Morrowindsome years ago, and hated when my save data was messed up. Rebirth from what Ive seen in game is amazing; a must have for my playthroughs. I never got far into the game but OpenMW, its an EXPERIENCE. So happy to use it (plus the fact you can play online with people) Whenever my pals ask me how to install Morrowind with mods, I point them here. I say you REALLY should get openMW, and follow your guides💖

No mention of the Atronach/Altmer combo? I know stunted magicka is a pain, but you can mitigate the defect by going to a shrine and paying for Almsivi or Divine Restoration; alternatively, pick conjuration as a 30 skill, and piss off your own summoned Ancestor Ghost for magicka restore.
A starting Magicka pool of 270 is pretty beastly, and a 50% chance of negating incoming spell effects is arguably the best late game build you can go with in vanilla, though the stunted magicka curse would probably put off new players thanks to the inconveniences.
I had very few problems running Morrowind compared to, say, Fallout 3. It felt pretty stable to me once you knew how to avoid some of the savegame bugs. Fantastic game.
I just wanted to re-emphasize Zaric's point about using OpenMW. If you are hesitant because you want to play the game as it originally was, I'd still strongly suggest you use it. OpenMW is feature complete and despite the fact that it seems like an early version, is also much more stable than the vanilla game. That sounds ridiculous but it's true. As far as new things go, it doesn't change anything gameplay-related from the original game, only adds a few small UI improvements like more hotkeys for getting out of menus. I am a bit cynical about community projects that sound as massive as OpenMW so I ignored it for a long time, but I am very impressed with their results. As of now, you can even play multiplayer (with TES3MP) on it, which has also come a long way and is very impressive. I play regularly with a friend of mine.

noticed that atronach wasn't mentioned its very powerful against caster types and an anything that has a magic enchant on the weapon. downside is you dont gain magic by resting but luckily alchemy is an easy skill to raise. Also you can take advantage of the fact that you can join mages guild, use the teleport to caldera first door on the right go up the stairs. There is a master alchemy set.
after that take a port to castle in the talvani area. buy marshmerrow and wickwheat so there is an old trick still works even with some of the rebalance. buy vendor out check again to see if it restocks.
if it does then you can do this, say vendor starts at 10 wickwheat and 10 marchmerrow. buy them all , sell them back
when you check agaoin he should have 20 ww and 20 mm then buy 20 ww and 20 mm then sell them back
then vendor should have 40ww and 40mm it will go up exp at this point to what you can affrord
but what you can afford make restore health pots sell them, vendor should still have the 40ww 40 mm
you wont much profit until your alchemy and merch goes up but both should raise well
you should be able to afford restore magica pot until you have enough money to get commberry and think void or frost salts cant remeber which is cheaper in vivic mages guild but comberry. again use a vendor that restocks ingredients and buy and sell to what you can afford to get a big stock of pots should be able to keep 50 of each at all times more if you are dung crawling or have a tough fight
.Also with enchanting you can make items that absorb magica. so once you get absorb magic high and im pretty sure you can get it to 100% yoi wont really need as many restore magica pot. you will really only need restore health

On TES3MP: It's actually possible to have a more "traditional" start to the game by changing some of the scripts.
I play with a couple of friends who are playing for the first time and I didn't want to start them off in Balmora. I set it to spawn at the ship, I've made it set variables to ensure the game knows character creation is finished and re-enabled the census and excise office. (The murder quest is too good to pass up)
Oh yeah, you also need to prevent it from deleting the ship or you go swimming the moment you try to exit :D

Here in May 2020, thank you so much I finally have a reason to play this classic and really see what this game is all about! Bought Morrowind in 2017 and couldn't get myself to play it for the life of me.
Gonna have to figure out how to build a character that won't die 5 minutes in, though...

I am a new player and killed two assassins at level one with only chitin pauldrons, greaves, and boots and a long blade with a damage range of 3-12. The second assassin caught me with only half health out of 55 and after fighting him I only had 7 health left.

Recently re-installed Morrowind, followed this guide to install OpenMW, official plugins, DB attack delayed, weapon sheathing mod and Patch for purists. Having a blast playing through again.
Hi Zaric, awesome summery introduction for OpenMW. I would only add three more essential mods that makes the game even more awesome: 'Shields Up' so you can setup to have the right-click Mouse button to be blocking like in Oblivion/Skyrim, 'Bodily Injuries' that gives you realistically penalty in attributes for being low in hit points and finally 'niapets Leveling' to change the game levelling in terms of how much slowdown to progress and whether the attributes increase should be lower than default. The latter one is very important in tes3mp, because with multiplayer the games become to easy and changing the difficult slider only makes the enemy more hit-points-spongy. I got morrowind from lord gaben this summer sale and was having trouble making it run on my notebook without freezing(I found out it has something to do with the codecs). I didn't know of openmw, your video solved all my issues! (As in fixing the game whilst making it as close to pure vanilla as possible)
Thanks again. Now I can enjoy freely the adventures of Groodur, my orc mage without losing my mind with freezes. (I did anticipate making an orc mage wouldn't be optimal or wise, but what can I say, I live for the roleplay. Character struggles and hardships included.)
Many Thanks Lord Zaric! I've been doing FPS since the early days of Doom, but never got Morrowind till the 25th aniv. This should really help me starting out. A lot to decide on here at first. I was not sure about a guy who wears a necktie when reviewing games, but subscribed when I saw your Warframe and Fallout 76 reviews.
Now I want to play Morrowind, but i didnt finish my playthrough on Enderal yet >.
In this case, Enderal takes precedence over OpenMW. SureAI really outdid themselves with this total conversion.
@HardWarUK: Ever heard of Gothic 1 and 2? Enderal was - among other games - heavily inspired by these classic RPGs. To be honest, I wouldn't dare comparing any of the modern TES games (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) to them. Bethesda is more on the sandbox-and-action RPG side of things.

I always make mistakes and end up not playing due to crashes but i cant play vanilla/vanilla graphics anymore - ive done it too many times haha
If you did a step-by-step (kind of like at the start of this video but the full process and explanation) of how to fully mod Morrowind, including graphics, morrowind rebirth, tamriel rebuilt, etc etc, im sure it would be greatly appreciated... at least by me X)

I must admit, because I heard the game was full of bugs before trying it, despite the patches...I had to rely a lot on the wiki in order to make sure that every time I want to kill someone, steal, or just explore a dungeon, I wasnt not going to break a later quest. But anyway, despite its graphics, I went throught all of the content, and those 400 hours with my dunmer magblade were hard at the beginning, but overall amazing...morrowind is a really good game.

awesome video.only minor complaint is that you could elaborate a little bit more on openMW,especially on how to update it and configure it a bit more for the modern systems.

You guys could also try to make Open MW work with Mod Organizer 2 if you want.
It seems like it works for me (so far)! That's what I did in order to run OpenMW through MO2:
1. First of - I've made a new MO2 instance for Morrowind (through the instance selection dialogue in the top left corner of MO2). Because I had one (two, actually) already.
Then I've installed all essential mods after that, to check if it works. It works, but it launches the original game. That's not what we want.
2. Then I installed this in MO2 plugins folder (read the description) - www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45642?tab=description
After that - in the tools menu (pazzles icon) I've clicked "Export to Open MW". Then clicked OK all the time.
3. Then I located and added OpenMW.exe and OpenMW Launcher as MO2 Executables.
4. Then I launched Open MW Launcher, then checked "Data Files" section - and it recognized all the plugins I installed.
And that was good, and I was happy.
And thank you Zaric for your video, it helped.
One question though... Do MWSE and MWSE related mods work on OpenMW? Gotta check it out...
After you start the game go to Balmora via transportation. Go to Ra'Virr shop and kill him. Don't take anything from him yet, go outside, talk to guard and pay bounty on your head for killing Ra'Virr. After that go back to his shop and loot his body, you will gain two blades worth 3000 and 9000 septims. Go to Mages guild in Balmora, teleport yourself from there to Caldera's mages guild. From there go to Ghorak Manor and sell one of the blades to Creeper, you will gain 3000 for first blade or 5000 for second. From this moment you are good to go and do some guild quests. Good way to invest that money is to spend them on improving some skills essential for your character.

Morrowind has an engine held together by gum and a paperclip.
I kept getting 'Flora Glow.bsa' not found on startup and I hadn't even modded the game. Then randomly it decided to launch and now its fine. I guess it just works.
You forgot about stealing the warehouse key in the office (the same way you do the limeware platter)
The warehouse is stocked full of all kinds of armor, weapons and goodies that you can either use or sell.

I can second that statement! Ubuntu w/Intel Int. Graphics here! OpenMW runs flawlessly and fast as lightning!!!
I actually am really loving Open MW.
Btw as for reordering the mods, OpenMW is automatically reordering my mods (which hasn't caused any issues for me so far I just find it annoying that when I put a mod in order I start the game and find it's back in the order OpenMW is putting it) I manually install the mods into OpenMW and use the config file to point it to the mods like I read on the site, so maybe that has something to do with it. If you CAN reorder without my issue though if you're new, do your research on each mod and experiment with load orders if you have to.
Could you just tell me which mods you have? Don't feel like reading 20 different mods.
