The competition was fierce back then. So many great bands, and as much as Budgie were good, they didn;t have the dark satanic edge of Sabbath, the sheer power of Purple, or the often folky, progressive mystique of Zep. They were just a heavy blues rock band. They didn't have the USP's of the of the major acts. Even Burke Shelly, whose voice I love, had a far more talented Canadian doppelganger in Geddy Lee. I suspect there were dozens of hard rock blues bands back then, who popped up every now and then on the Whistle Test, sounded great but were never heard of again. Budgie were at the very top of that third division, and at least enjoyed some album chart success, and the accolade of being a major influence on the NWOBHM. A bit like Diamond Head, later on.

I found out yesterday that our dear beloved Burke Shelley passed on on the 10th of January.
This was the first song I played. His fans never wanted him to go, and to us, he will always be playing a major part in our lives.
I saw Budgie at the Saxon Tavern in 1983 - and, not unexpectedly, they were brilliant. I managed to touch them all as they were being applauded. Definitely one of my more memorable moments!
    Love you Burke Shelley
    RIP 🙏🕯️ XXXXX

definitely Budgie is one of the premo 70's bands I cannot express in words of gratitude of the happiness toe tapping just wanting to get up and dance music and I don't dance, Loved to have seen them but happy to listen and share their music to those with opened minds or searching for something ....... Budgie

Yo me crié escuchando Budgie. Una banda q es iconica, referencia obligada de los años 70. Gran influencia para muchas bandas, incluyendo Metallica. Me retrotrae a mi juventud, ahora tengo 66 y ellos tan frescos... Suenan como otrora... Buen¡¡¡¡¡s¡¡¡¡¡mooooo

Grouse Band... "Breadfan", "In the grip of a Tyre fitters hands" and this song, Budgie's cover of "Baby please don't go" on guitar back in the mid 80's. Really full sound for a 3 peice back and flat out guitar esp. on the song Itgoa Tyre fitters hands." This Album was really hard to find/get even back in the 80's.

First recorded by joe williams in 1935, 1953 muddy waters, 1964 them & van morrison(uptempo like this one and thats the bluesrocksound you hear everywhere throughout the 70's which eventually leads to metal.

I might be crazy but I really love the way this song plays on for awhile and then just abruptly ends. I'm pretty sure a lot of Budgie's other songs do the same thing, which creates a sort of gimmick, which is something that you don't see very often in modern music.

James McKenzie If you like this, you should listen to “You’re the Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk.” It’s a creative epic that only Budgie could write!
