Hi- You are right. Although they produced great songs & albums, they were never mentioned in the same breath as Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin etc, unfounded in my opinion. Vastly underated but I'm encouraged by the fact they influenced many other bands & spurned many cover bands. Thanks Burke & Budgie for the memories.

I love it guys. I played Metallica's version of the song at the Roxy Theater in Buckhead on the north side of Atlanta Georgia in 1996. It was with my band Surge Dragon. MTV sponsored us and 5 other bands. We headlined the show. Thanks for sharing guys.
Burke once stood in for Snatch It Back's frontman Chris for a few months when he'd lost his voice. So just playing pub gigs and evidently loving it; he was so at ease with an audience of any size, having a laugh and a joke and rocking the roof off the place. More than just a gentleman, a true rocker for whom the music was the thing. It was a real privilege to have witnessed those small gigs mostly at the Royal Oak, full of bikers and seen him up close.
The world was just not ready for them, but every rock musician worth their salt was influenced by them. it's why there are so many cover versions of their songs by 80's metal bands out there

I'm a die hard sabbath, zeppelin and floyd fan in my opinion the holy trinity. I'm ashamed to say I never even heard of budgie until yesterday, I'm literally blown away they are amazing, right up there with 70's sabbath.

We were all hoping, I am sure, that Burke would return to live performing, but very sadly this was not to be. My sincere condolences go out to Burke's family in this very sad moment. We don't really think of rock bands as being able to swing, but Budgie were that rare exception. They were so tight and locked in they were more like a jazz trio, effortlessly able to move and change shapes mid song without even a flicker.
Yes, I saw Budgie many, many times at the Croydon Greyhound on a Sunday night. Between the years 1972-1976. Some nights it was packed but some nights we could sit on the front of the stage and just let them blow our ears to pieces. It took 3 days before the ringing stopped but oh man did we have a great time. Had many a beer with Tony Bourge and burke. Burke used to tell us his favourite band was the carpenters but I never knew if he was pulling our plonker or not. We saw Thin lizzy too on the same stage many times and they played even louder. Strangly enough I can still hear perfectly.
Fox at the Greyhound on a Sunday night - those were they days. I remember the infamous Golden Earing gig when the band pulled out because the stage was too small, and they put on a heavy rock disco instead.
Did the same with Nik Turnet, ex-Hawkwind at the Swan in Bolton as a callow youth in 1980 stood next to the speaker, was deaf for three days. Happy days, done it innumerable times since, no hearing loss, great tune tho Parents is my favourite...

First heard this song in 1974c. when I was 13 . Overheard my university sisters music of this band and wondered as I lay on my bed why my toes were tapping in time and my head was banging up and down .This band ( thanks to my wonderful sister ) Immediately set in motion my love affair with metal etc. After 1975 I never heard them again and couldn't remember name ,flashforward to 2021 and I accidentally found breadfan by budgie again and. As I listened wonderful memories flooded back. And I found out they were still touring. Then tragically This great man died , and I know I will always remember him and his awesome band as he passed away on my birthday 10/1/22 RIP outstanding human being God bless. Mark
It's a bitter sweet moment when I hit 51 years of age and just randomly come across this song I have enjoyed for decades. Only to realise that it was done WAY WAAAAY better by the original band. This is amazing. I shared it with a friend and he instantly thought of RUSH.
I just saw these guys on a documentary about Dave Mustaine on MTV. Being and old 73 graduate from high school and a short attempt at being a long haired rock and roller, this type of music is right up my alley. 66 years old now but wishing I had heard of these guys 50 years ago. I now have a newband/songs with these cats. Thank you technology. It's one of the few benefits of this world today in that something that brings joy to my soul. Thanks TH-cam. Didn't even realize Burke Shelley had passed away. Very unfortunate to lose one of the pioneers of metal/hard rock. They were super heavy for their time and had a big influence on the development of heavy metal. Burke, in particular, had some of the best bass grooves and one of the best voices of the 1970's. RIP, Burke Shelley. You will be missed.

I chose them as part of a seven song/four band (some bands had more than one song) for a compilation album for limited distribution to FM radio two years before their debut album. I was close with Dave who engineered their first release so I got to pop in on the recording sessions.

Budgie brought me here. I was in a garage band that practiced in an old pig shed on a mates family’s farm. We used to do this song. I think we did it justice. Our lead guitarist went on to play in many bands and makes a living as a session musician to this day. Our singer had lost two fingers in a motorbike crash and his voice really suited this song. Our drummer went on to die in a horrific industrial accident. I still have some tapes of us rehearsing. We were called Virgin Blood. We did a version of this long before Metallica.

I was in a local Atlanta rock and roll band in 90'-91 and I found someone that had a cassette of our release recently (I had nothing of it) and I was surprised how well it had aged. 1-2 guitars, a bass, a drummer and a singer playing rock 'n roll will always age better than electronic music, rap or radio pop or pop country will. Budgie released this song when I was a little kid, but I was a teenager when Metallica covered this in '87, hard to believe it was only 14 years between the original and the cover, but 23 years since the cover! BTW I knew a man who'd grown up in Wales and saw them playing before they were signed, said they were really good live, no surprise there

My 18 years old son recently "inherited" my "ancient" Rock music collection (with several quite worn out Budgie albums). Even he loves Budgie. The Budgie albums aged quite well. Even now, 50 years later, I am still loving their records.
My Band had the pleasure of supporting Budgie a few times in the 70s was instantly impressed with their songwriting abilities and incredible musicality. Watched then from the side of the stage playing parents, bread fan, In the grip of the tyre fitters hand, etc. Will always remember those days with great affection.
Man that is just so good, it amazes me just how much music transcends through time. This is as good today, if not better, cos we realise what we had, what we are losing. Hands off AI, leave the arts alone. Thanks legends for this gold

It's a bitter sweet moment when I hit 51 years of age and just randomly come across this song I have enjoyed for decades. Only to realise that it was done WAY WAAAAY better by the original band. This is amazing. I shared it with a friend and he instantly thought of RUSH.

I just saw these guys on a documentary about Dave Mustaine on MTV. Being and old 73 graduate from high school and a short attempt at being a long haired rock and roller, this type of music is right up my alley. 66 years old now but wishing I had heard of these guys 50 years ago. I now have a newband/songs with these cats. Thank you technology. It's one of the few benefits of this world today in that something that brings joy to my soul. Thanks TH-cam. Didn't even realize Burke Shelley had passed away. Very unfortunate to lose one of the pioneers of metal/hard rock. They were super heavy for their time and had a big influence on the development of heavy metal. Burke, in particular, had some of the best bass grooves and one of the best voices of the 1970's. RIP, Burke Shelley. You will be missed.

I was among the few Americans who recognized the quality of Budgie.
I chose them as part of a seven song/four band (some bands had more than one song) for a compilation album for limited distribution to FM radio two years before their debut album. I was close with Dave who engineered their first release so I got to pop in on the recording sessions.

Budgie brought me here. I was in a garage band that practiced in an old pig shed on a mates family’s farm. We used to do this song. I think we did it justice. Our lead guitarist went on to play in many bands and makes a living as a session musician to this day. Our singer had lost two fingers in a motorbike crash and his voice really suited this song. Our drummer went on to die in a horrific industrial accident. I still have some tapes of us rehearsing. We were called Virgin Blood. We did a version of this long before Metallica.

I was in a local Atlanta rock and roll band in 90'-91 and I found someone that had a cassette of our release recently (I had nothing of it) and I was surprised how well it had aged. 1-2 guitars, a bass, a drummer and a singer playing rock 'n roll will always age better than electronic music, rap or radio pop or pop country will. Budgie released this song when I was a little kid, but I was a teenager when Metallica covered this in '87, hard to believe it was only 14 years between the original and the cover, but 23 years since the cover! BTW I knew a man who'd grown up in Wales and saw them playing before they were signed, said they were really good live, no surprise there

I love the rawness of this song, the picking noises really adds to it, makes it feel like a budgie chirping or something which is ironic.

the first band i ever saw live. it was 1970 and they were booked to play at our school's Christmas dance, for those of us who were 15 and over. i still wonder if the school's headmaster knew exactly what he was getting. great night, headbanging, and kissing the girls. lovely

My 18 years old son recently "inherited" my "ancient" Rock music collection (with several quite worn out Budgie albums). Even he loves Budgie. The Budgie albums aged quite well. Even now, 50 years later, I am still loving their records.

My Band had the pleasure of supporting Budgie a few times in the 70s was instantly impressed with their songwriting abilities and incredible musicality. Watched then from the side of the stage playing parents, bread fan, In the grip of the tyre fitters hand, etc. Will always remember those days with great affection.
