One of the first metal bands for sure, but the first one that we can call "heavy metal" is Black Sabbath. When Budgie release their first album "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid" had already seen the light.
Actually Lucifer's Friend's first album came out 3 weeks before Black Sabbath so they are recognized as the first heavy metal album! It's highly recommended if you're into hard rock/heavy metal.
The Budgie/Nazareth combination was extraordinary. Came to know them via Alan Freeman of course - listened to them under the covers with my little transistor radio.
Im 62. I first heard Budgie when I worked near San Antonio Texas early 70s. There was an AM radio station better than any FM Ive ever heard. After hearing them I had to have their music importing some of it. Because of that radio station I was the first in my small town and even Dallas to hear and turn on people to Budgie,Scorpions who played in the small town in Germany I was located at,Judas Priest in the beginning when they destroyed any band they opened for and the first time ever to hear eruption Van Halen. Then the station dissapeared from the universe. It was such a wonderful time driving the car late at night with friends and max volume 2 mph for hours except when I was stopped and didnt know it due to microdots, strawberry fields, and the liquid kind that came in murine eye wash bottles that gave me a few out of the body experiences. Way back when, not many of us had a Budgie LP in amongst the Zep, Sabbath, Purple and Quo, hardly anyone had heard of them, glad they're getting more recognition now to a new generation. Like early Rush and Motorhead, there is something simple and visceral about a three piece.
Exactly! 3 is the magic number! Budgie is the pay off of hearing that there is a obscure band playing this hidden music and discovering its the real deal! Wasnt let down! No surprises in life well try again because Budgie was wicked good suprise! Words did it justice.
