My experience with my 2009 Silverado installing the lift kit with 140,000 miles on her is that Yes, a few months later new ball joints and wheel bearing were needed, just on daily city driving, so I decided to learn who to work on my as much as i can. Thanks for the help, CO.

That's pretty spot on. Putting a lift on a higher mileage truck will do that really quick. I'm surprised your transmission didn't grenade on you too.

Actually lifting a truck doesn't cause stress to engine trans or axles. Bigger wheels and tires will.

@J F wider tires create more drag on the drivetrain. But going from 9 1/2 to 10 wide isn't that much of a difference.

Love hearing about Kryptonite, I threw every part they made at the time 3 or 4 years ago on my front end and launched a 2500hd 9 feet in the sky. Kryptonite parts held (no surprise) motor mounts and radiator not so much. Totally worth it.

Pretty sure my old bearings were on the outs but I went with Timken bearings on the replacement. Tire size 35" and 2 years later not an issue.

  • @hdz12ez
    @hdz12ez 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

I would add that when the vehicle is in forward motion, the wheels naturally want to go outward(toe out), so manufacturers intentionally make alignment specs slightly toed in to combat this. Throw on some wide rims and tires with a large negative offset and you're adding tons of stress on the suspension. Especially the tie rods. Also, driving here on Michigan roads is absolutely sure to destroy your suspension and wheels, factory or otherwise. Not sure how Wisconsin is but Michigan is 3rd world. Good info in this vid though.

If you are worried about bearing (4x4) look into conventional bearings in a free-spin kit over unit bearings. The bearing spacing is wider and handles the stresses better.

I'm a fan of small wheels and lots of tire (on a truck). The functionality of small, *sort of* light wheels + big tires > huge, heavy rotating mass with low profile tires on a 4x4.

Everyone has their preference. You're more into real off road capability. Whereas a lot of these newer builds are more street truck inspired. Its like a fusion of the two. Still got a lift rather than lowering, and big meaty tires. But now these street trucks are trading off road meaty for street tires that still look meaty. You'll see roll pans which are a street thing rather than off road bumpers. I personally like both looks. The new street truck look and the off road/work truck look. Never was a fan of lowered/slammed myself.

I prefer 0 offset rims anyways even if it means I can't run much bigger then a 13 wide tire. The weight stays centered but even more stress is added to steering. Having a solid front axle helps as well. I dont mind the rough ride I have a car for the long road trips.

The worst thing is the offset. if you had the wider wheels, but the offset put the weight on the same part of the wheel, you wouldn't have any major issues. Guys trying to get a ton of poke with silly offsets and spacers are going to see alot of wear on the ball joints and bearings. The extra weight of the wheels and tires is just harder on the drivetrain, for the most part.

  • @xrickel559

It's real simple. If you want to play it safe on a daily driver 12 wides on a 1500 and 14 wides on a 2500. Unless you want to get into the world of obnoxiously expensive upgraded steering parts then do whatever.

For anyone that reads this a 12 wide on a spacer is worse than a 14 without spacers
It's not how far your wheel sticks out its how far the inside of your wheel sticks out
So a 24x16 with a 4.5 backspace will do the same amount of wheel bearing wear as a 10 with the same backspacing

    • @savage_24v

Savage 24v uh.... google “define offset” and a good visualization should come up as the first picture. I think you’re calling the offset backspacing. It’s all comes down to where your hub is in comparison to the center of the wheel

if you think about it a 24x12 and a 24x16 is the same wheel except that the 16 has 4 inches added on to the offset/ outside lip of the wheel. but from the mounting point to the inside of the wheel is the same measurement therefore same stress on the wheel bearings

I have a Jeep JKU and just blew a ball joint after 11k miles. I'm currently running a 20x12 wheel on 35" toyos and a 4 inch lift. I also bring my Jeep off-road which isn't great for ball joints.

Sean Goodman why so much rim brother? Not talking crap, but if you go off reading a lot why not a smaller rim like a 17 with some bead locks. You will have a smoother ride, you won’t have to worry so much about scuffing or scratching your rims. You can air down so much more to Achieve greater traction on the trails. You eliminate more weight so it’s less stress on your suspension components. I bet your Jeep does look nice though!

Long story short, not if you get the right height for wheels, maybe will need some cutting on front lip (side of lip) so wheels dont rub at full turn, and will scratch paint if you dont have mudflaps because the wide wheels will kick rocks to your paint.

    • @73powerstroke56

Traction bars are used for trucks or cars with alot of torque. Keeps the wheel on the ground for better traction and prevents ur rear end from curling under ecceleration.
