@@strykerentllcI agree that many hybrid especially power split drivetrains suffering such problems but extended range phevs like classic example chevy volt does not have such problems because primary power is on electric and after battery drained than turning ICE and heat up quite quickly
Great review, Tommy! Styling is very reminiscent of the Scout II of the '70's and I do like it, but I am finding it a little too "gadgety" and "luxury". I had a 1970 that I wish I still had. Those are great trucks. I appreciate the locking diffs, straight rear axle, 35's but I wish they'd offer a straight mechanical ICE for those of us who just are not interested in Ev's or Hybrids.
My dad had a '73 Travelall when I was in high school. Ours even had ABS, the first time I ever saw ABS in a vehicle. Sadly we sold it cheap when he passed in '84 when anything with a V8 was pretty much worthless because of the gas crisis.
No it doesn't. You get more range but you will still have to sit for a half an hour or more at a charger. Then you'll need to fill up the range extender tank.
Range anxiety? This is going to have a NACS port, so presumably access to Tesla's network, and even more charging stations will be built by the time it hits the streets. Range anxiety should be a rapidly fading concept by then. (As it already is for Tesla owners.) I can see the hybrid version being useful for some folks, if they do a lot of towing or if they live in Wyoming maybe, but that's a niche. I predict most won't bother with it.
If you have a range extender, all you have to do is refill the fuel tank and keep on keepin’ on. If you have a range extender and available gasoline, you’re not going to have to sit at a charger if you don’t want to.
I kinda wish they had a circular element to the headlight as a throwback to the original. Maybe aftermarket will come up with something cool for that. The range extender is awesome and will be what makes this vehicle epic. Every SUV and truck should have that as an option.
If it's a true hybrid, sure...but this is VW we're talking about and they've bet the farm on EV's...and it currently looks like the farm is going to be in foreclosure soon.
@@berzerkerseamus2955 Edison Motors is doing Semi Truck and 3/4 ton retrofits as Electric with onboard generator. The Generator is your onboard charging station. Works for Locomotives and ships just fine. If Scout uses a range extender (generator), then off road trips become much more piratical as no charging station needed. I bet you could use the generator at camp for power.
@@jaekimchi If only people understood the shortcomings of the gasoline engine in these hybrid systems... FLC is never going to tell the public any vehicle they review is rubbish. If they did, they'd be blackballed by the manufacturers and would be forced to find a new line of yootoob work.
@@strykerentllc This is actually the best way to do a fuel-based range extender. It's just a gas generator that will charge the battery while you drive. If they do it right, it should be the most efficient way to do a "hybrid", but it'll probably be a very expensive addon. Only time will tell.
Kudos to the new Scout! Very reminiscent in design to the original IH binders. Love the front bench seat and split tailgate. Reminds me of my first car, a 1980 Scout II. Well done!

Always love comments like this. They haven't built a single production version yet and you're already saluting it as a resounding success. My bet, if it even makes it to market (which I have huge doubts) it will sell for close to $100k which will guarantee its failure given how small a market that price will guarantee.
@Mike-In-O-Town always love comments like this. That one dude knows it all already 🤣. So what i like it. Didn't know that was a problem king. That's why they put videos out like this for feedback. And yeah it's gonna start high Duh living in the world we live in. Are you surprised 😲. But it's actually not 100k. Try half that. So yeah this will work and sell great. People are aloud to comment and think what they want. That's that.
@@Mike-In-O-Town When you consider how cheap the USD has become why would you want this vehicle to be $60k? That would just assure cheap materials and probably worse.
@@MatthewC137 Personally, this vehicle in its current form is of no interest to me regardless what it costs. If they wanna be true to Scout and IH, give the thing a IC motor, and make it a simple one.
Nope. The naysayers are now claiming the price is a lie and it will be over $100k. Or claiming the range extender will make it more complex and break down constantly.
It looks amazing, but I think everyone (positive and negative) needs to be realistic and admit nothing matters until production units actually hit the market so we can see true price, interior, features, trim levels. I'm very interested in this SUV, but prototypes don't matter.
True story... I grew up in a cult that started in the San Francisco Bay area but the leader/pastor had a 'vision' that we all needed to buy a Scout II and move to the Sierra Neveda Mountians. So, I learned to drive in a Scout II until I smashed the transfer case on a rock wheeling it in the woods and my parents took it away. Great vehicle, weird cultly memories around it though.
Absolutely beautiful. I cannot wait to get the Traveler. This looks so much better than the Rivian R1S. The Scout Traveler looks like a real off road SUV. Capable of having real off road tires, real ground clearance and the proportions on this thing are flawless unlike the Rivian R1S which has a huge butt and polished chrome everywhere trying to look like a mercedes or something. Totally legit.
Did he just say only 60k like that was a good thing. And people are losing touch with reality. It is crazy expensive right now to buy anything in life let alone a $60,000 vehicle
Scouts have been a part of my life from day one. Had to sell my fully restored 800 to fund my business. Ima bust my a$$ working toward getting one of these when they come out. Can’t wait! It’ll fit in the quiver nicely along side a blown 5.7 Tundra.
This is how you make an EV. Traditional and non-offensive, plus it has the range extender. I think we should model future cars on diesel electric trains. The electric motors propel the vehicle while the diesel engine acts as a generator to power the electric motors. In the case of the Scout its a little different. You charge the battery like a normal EV but if you're out in the bush and you start to run low on charge the ICE engine will fire up to keep you going. I think for heavy duty vehicles such as semi trucks we should go the full train style diesel electric route. That way you don't have to lug around a 5 ton battery just to get 500 miles of range (which is less than half that of conventional diesel trucks). Edison motors has built a working truck with that layout and its great.
The coolest thing about the old International Scout was that the whole roof would come off like a Jeep Wrangler. They should have done that. I do like this better than any of the other battery powered electric "trucks" or "off road vehicles" it will compete against. Guaranteed the final price won't be $60K. Glad they're making it in the USA.
I’m gonna be honest, i’m sick of offroad vehicles (especially jeeps) that have the same highway sound deadening as an empty tuna can because of its removable everything
I can see a recommendation for another video on the Scout next to this one and it has 'Global Launch' emblazoned all over the thumbnail. It might therefore very well hit the European market also, although I doubt we will see it here in Japan.
No gas engine?? European parent does not understand American off road market! As someone who off roads a lot in Colorado I NEVER see EV's off road. No gas mean that means mostly wealthy moms will buy this to look cool dropping their brats off at school. Will only sell in small numbers like Rivian. Too bad, great design.
This may be my first actual new car. It's everything I wanted in terms of looks and the gas range extender is the only way I'd feel comfortable buying an EV. I'm very interested!!!
Wow how revolutionary. In just 2 years I can buy an ev truck with a generator attached. Let me guess, it's going to only be $50,000 despite the prices directly in front of us from every dealer in 2024! WHOA, MIND BLOWN
I love it. Large electric only vehicles designed to do any semblance of work make no sense at all at this time. Having a generator on board with a smaller battery bank is where the industry should have been pushing all along...better performance, better range, and better for the environment...added bonus is you now own a generator and battery backup system for your home (provided Scout is smart enough to ensure owners can harness all the power the onboard generator creates). This thing is gorgeous.
In other words a "Hybrid", which is where Ford, Toyota, and many other OEM's have refocused their attention (i.e. away from pure EV's) based on what their customers are willing to buy.
@@Mike-In-O-Town I guess you could call it a hybrid...though it is very different from any current hybrids on the market that I know of. What I'm describing (and what Edison Motors, the Ramcharger, and now Scout are doing) is a completely electric powertrain with no transmission or transfer case connected to the combustion engine. The generator motor can be much smaller and more efficient because it is designed/sized only to charge the batteries and doesn't need to move the vehicle or have a high rev range to work with transmission gearing.
"I want to believe". If they can bring the range extender version to market for a five figure sticker and it actually works well, this could be the first primarily electric car that actually interests me. Good luck, Scout.
As for the design, they done a fantastic job with a updated look to the old scouts. Drivetrain choices and body on frame once again outstanding. Was absolutely interested until I found out it was hybrid or electric. Should have a gas or diesel version while keeping the hybrid versions. Some people in the market want nothing to do with electric vehicles. These would sell like crazy if the gas and diesel versions were available. Especially since jeep is doing it's best to kill itself. Being made in the US is great as well. Sorry, hard pass from me unless a ICE version only is available.
I reserved one. Not sold on EVs, but wheeled with a Rivian and was impressed with its EV camping capabilities. An EV offroader with a generator seems like a good idea. For reference, I’m a locomotive engineer and my locomotives are EVs with diesel generators… about time a reputable manufacturer did this with an offroad vehicle.
Tesla didn't want to get into dealing with ICE engines, but apparently they designed the CT in a way that others could do so. Archimedes Defense is offering the STING Baja upfit package which includes a multi-fuel generator/extender that fits in the frunk and a mount for a spare tire on the back. Pure EVs have their place, but for the foreseeable future there is still a market for this sort of hybrid.
Towing capacity, off road capability, truly made in the US, and it's so good looking! This is going to be a game changer. I do wish there was an all gas version. I'm quite nervous about electric vehicles and LOVE the rumble of gas (in most sizes). I've been underwhelmed with Jeep and Stelantis with everything that's going down over there and the Bronco is underwhelming with towing capacity, price, and size. This could be the solution!
The way that Electric only is struggling to make headway in the marketplace, the range extender approach will work well in the North American market-and perhaps elsewhere.
I had a Scout I RHD Postal Vehicle. I brought it to Austrailia to use, had a heck of a time importing it, til they realized I had a Diplomatic Passport. I really loved that thing.
I’ll be impressed if they release a 50k version. I’m guessing 85 and it’ll be closer to 90 with the range extender. I know they’re claiming 50k but with the amount if money VW is losing in their current EVs there’s no way that’s happening.
@@Mr8Daddy The new bespoke factory and clean-sheet design should make it possible to build them cheaper than in a legacy plant not designed to build electric cars.
Single piece mega castings for frame? Cell to chassis manufacturing technique? If everything is ran through the touchscreen, that would simplify wiring; no fuses, relays, reduction of microcontroller, and wiring weight itself. The scout should simplistic, and these new manufacturing techniques should help it achieve that. I heard nothing in the actual Scout presentation on manufacturing to make sure that they will reach $60G. I'm not reassured as a plu in hybrid is the most expensive drivetrain and the least efficient as your lugging around 2 powertrains and will suffer weight penalty of them. This will have very little loading capacity. Don't get me wrong. I love the looks but VAG done a poor job executing on the EV side of the powertrain globally
@jonathonalsop2120 wow that's great news regarding finally adding a gas range extender! Hopefully Scout will have a camp mode to have the AC/heat on while car camping inside. Being able to use the EV battery as generator will also be very useful (V2L)
I hope they make a version that has a little less battery and a bigger gass tank so that you can road trip without having to wait araound for a charge.

@@strykerentllcI agree that many hybrid especially power split drivetrains suffering such problems but extended range phevs like classic example chevy volt does not have such problems because primary power is on electric and after battery drained than turning ICE and heat up quite quickly
These will be $80k+ when released
Well they aren’t for the poors
If it ran on liquid dinosaur. That would be awesome.
Great review, Tommy! Styling is very reminiscent of the Scout II of the '70's and I do like it, but I am finding it a little too "gadgety" and "luxury". I had a 1970 that I wish I still had. Those are great trucks.
I appreciate the locking diffs, straight rear axle, 35's but I wish they'd offer a straight mechanical ICE for those of us who just are not interested in Ev's or Hybrids.
i had a '73 Travelall in the 90's when i was in college, it was the best party wagon on earth! i am def gettin one of these!!
My dad had a '73 Travelall when I was in high school. Ours even had ABS, the first time I ever saw ABS in a vehicle. Sadly we sold it cheap when he passed in '84 when anything with a V8 was pretty much worthless because of the gas crisis.
This is smart. The ICE extender takes away the range anxiety. When I originally heard all electric, I was bummed. Somebody is thinking.
@@Zobeid - Agree, had range anxiety for only the first month of owning a Tesla. Still have anxiety about getting a flat tire.
@@Zobeid Instead you'll just be stuck in a 4 hour long line to charge your car like they are already doing in SF and LA 😆
Launched underneath VW? 🤯🤯🤯 thanks for the explanation. This is wild! 1:15
PSA: “eXpecially” has never been a word 😂
I kinda wish they had a circular element to the headlight as a throwback to the original. Maybe aftermarket will come up with something cool for that.
The range extender is awesome and will be what makes this vehicle epic. Every SUV and truck should have that as an option.
It looks perfect!!! Glad they wised up and will have a hybrid...
unfortunately range extenders aren't true hybrid
If it's a true hybrid, sure...but this is VW we're talking about and they've bet the farm on EV's...and it currently looks like the farm is going to be in foreclosure soon.
@@berzerkerseamus2955 REVs are sick. What's your issue with them?
@@berzerkerseamus2955 Edison Motors is doing Semi Truck and 3/4 ton retrofits as Electric with onboard generator. The Generator is your onboard charging station. Works for Locomotives and ships just fine. If Scout uses a range extender (generator), then off road trips become much more piratical as no charging station needed. I bet you could use the generator at camp for power.
I will buy one if they just make a nice simple full gas engine version without all the battery crap…
I hope it’s as good as they want it to be. Loved the real scout. Would much rather see these on the road than the cybertruck

I'll stick with the '70s flare of the G wagon.
I hope the naysayers are eating their words now! Scout nailed it! Sooooo exciting
Looks really great. Love the interior. Hope they bulk up the tie rods! Rivians and Broncos have terrible problems with broken and bent tie rods.
Yeah i like the style but im not taking an ev offroad
It needs to be offered in six different shades of brown to fulfill its legacy.
That looks like Ford Bronco 🛻
Did he just say only 60k like that was a good thing. And people are losing touch with reality. It is crazy expensive right now to buy anything in life let alone a $60,000 vehicle
I'm starting to believe TFL in all versions have become shills for the auto industry.
@@cmiles97x38 Ditto
Very nice, I hope they both come to Germany too.
A reliable 6 cylinder and this will be awesome!
I would love to purchase a gasoline powered Scout.
I dig it, needs round headlights instead of the 80s style square
"I want to believe". If they can bring the range extender version to market for a five figure sticker and it actually works well, this could be the first primarily electric car that actually interests me. Good luck, Scout.
Rivian and Bronco had a baby 😆
Love it but 60 grand will make it available for only a certain demographic.
Aren't most gas trucks, SUVs now a days in that range? EV ones are a lot more.than 60k
I like it with a 5.0 and 10A and one small 12V battery for $45,000
Nah needs a minimum of like 40kwh battery to send massive amount of power to the Two Motors.
Wish it had the circular lights like the OG Scout. Toyota did it right with the Land Cruiser's option.
It's the Bronco Rivian
For a reason. VW has deals with both those companies -sharing tech and parts. Ford Semi-trailer trucks in EU are actually VW for example.
Yep. Their UI will be delivered by Rivian. Which is great.
Definitely good looking, but no only ICE im not interested.
Anyone else find it ironic that Volkswagen, notorious for electrical problems, built an electric vehicle?
ID.4 has already bombed in the USA. It's a total failure.
Very ironic. Talk about a bigger nightmare😂
ID.4 has been a complete failure especially in the North American market. Nobody wants them.
Remember "it's not a Volkswagen" 😂
Really cool and off road focused but is no one else seeing a Rivian R1T/S?
With the investment VW has in Rivian, I wonder if there is parts sharing going on?
it literally looks like they mashed bronco and a rivian together
I had the same thought, especially with the truck
Or does a Rivian look like a Scout, considering these look a lot like the final International Scouts from the early 1980s?
I see it!
Wish there was an ice variant with at least a V6
I had a Scout I RHD Postal Vehicle. I brought it to Austrailia to use, had a heck of a time importing it, til they realized I had a Diplomatic Passport. I really loved that thing.
Yes, they nailed it! Great video, Tommy. Some Rivian tech in a proprietary package that is really functional. With a harvester range extender!
The frunk has cup holders? The frunk has cup holders!!
why does no new car brand create cars that normal people with normal jobs can buy?
You'll own nothing and be happy. TPTB do not want The Masses to own private vehicles.
This is such a badass off roader. hopefully they can release a $35-40k trim version
Won't happen for less than 50k in this age.
