I want to correct a miss speak. The bonsai wire is aluminum with coating, not copper. The coating allows me to minimize any leaching of aluminum into the tank if I needed to spray my mangrove trees. I super glue the cut ends of the wire to cap off the exposed metal end.
Great video, glad to see some good information about how to grow mangroves. I have been growing a few for many years and have used many of the techniques Tyler mentioned, especially growing them out of saltwater for a few years, then converting them into the saltwater environment. Also, Remy you are my favorite presenter on Reef Builders, I hope you stay with them and continue. You should be the face of Reef Builders.
Great vid guys, I have a new tank that I’m trying to do mangroves and acros and clams in. I bought a prop a few months ago and its been chillin in my sump in my main tank with no light and has been growing roots pretty well to my surprise. Cool how durable these guys are
Love the video and great info. But it takes a lot more than 3 years for a red mangrove to give birth to propagule seeds. I would say at least 10-15 years. That's just a guess but I have many that are 3 years old and they are still only around 2-3 feet long.
hey Remy just want to say thank you for the ICP test. too bad I won't get to meet up with you at palooza New York. But you will get the best of the choices, you get to go Australia. take care of your little brother Salem while your there. lol.
I have two mangrove buckets. Have three different species. Two are in buckets and the other is in a pot with no drainage holes. Just the tree for the tree.
@@ReefBuildersVideo Then I might prefer a separate container (not made from glass) right next to it and maintain that as a special plant with brackish(-y) water. Voila!
I’ve never actually seen one break a tank but the prop roots do have some power. I’m more concerned about the prop roots pushing against the opposite panes of glass and blowing the tank out that way. I can see where my trees hit the seam of the tank where the silicone is at and they usually just bend and travel along the silicone or divert in a different direction. It’s definitely possible but i don’t think it’s something that will happen overnight though
Great video! Anyone have any idea how wide the trunks get at the waterline with these mangroves? I'm having a lid designed with mangrove cutouts, but have no idea what size to make them. Any info would be appreciated.
Hello , just wondering if I grow the mangroves out of the top of my tank as a canopy how will my corals get enough light to survive ? Ty sorry if this a stupid question.
Tyler might pop in here with the answer but it usually takes a couple years to get significant growth. Like he said in the video, once that root structure is set, the canopy will start to take off. ~Remy
@@ReefBuildersVideo Correct. I have some that are about the same as his and it has taken 3-4 years I can't recall at this point. Growing them out in freshwater in a pot then, transferring them to saltwater is the best way to go if you want to speed up the process.
My mangroves range from a couple years to some over 8-10 years. They don’t look as large as I constantly cut them back and shape them as I really can’t raise the lights up any higher.
Does cutting the mangroves back also inhibit the root growth? In bonsais you occasionally prune the roots, but with what Tyler said about the “bleeding out” it seems that would be problematic.
@@carlholmberg7303 I haven’t seen any inhibition when I cut the mangrove canopy. Typically the tree will just put more resources into more branches and possibly root growth if needed. I have and will cut the mangrove roots similar to a bonsai tree in the near future awe I don’t want the roots pressing against the sides of the glass tank. When I do that, I just cover the cut end of the roof with super glue.
Hi, I have pulled up some baby Mangrove plants from local mud flats in Sydney, potted them and placed them in my reef aquarium but they all keep dying! What am I doing wrong? Their leaves dried up and dropped!

For one if you are in the US, it might be illegal. You are only allowed to collect the propagules in most areas. Try getting them from propagules and growing them out in freshwater or in a pot like Inland suggested.
It depends. When you have a young tree, I would say no. The waste from fish and other creatures in your tank will settle in the sand bed and become the necessary fertilizer. I add root tabs to the substrate now as my mangrove trees have grown quite large and have exceeded the nutrient uptake from the inhabitants waste. Another option is using some type of enriched substrate like two little fishies refugite or miracle mud and cap it with your ornamental sand as a way to help fertilize the roots as they grow.
@@mryes413 I would worry that dosing liquid fertilizer could adversely effect what else is in the tank. I do dose nitrates for my macroalgae but not sure how much that helps the mangroves. Interesting thought to ponder though

Tyler is such a knowledgeable and passionate hobbiest. We’re lucky to have guys like him in reefing! Great video.
Thanks!

MANGROVES! Live for these videos, excited to see the future videos involving those amazing trees on the channel! Well done RB team!

Best mangrove video I’ve seen
Great episode. Very informative. 👏🔥💯👌
Love these mangrove tanks!
They are beautiful! ~Remy
Looking forward to part two . Always nice to see Julian 😊
Looking forward to seeing you guys at the pet show 👍🏻
Yes! We'll be at Dymax Fish Town! ~Remy
My boss helped build the coral farm there 🙌 I'll be volunteering soon and hopefully working there in the future ❤

Great video! I've only been playing with mangroves in my freshwater aquariums for a few years but had a lot of fun doing it!
This was such a good video! I always learn something from Tyler! And those mangroves in the Florida aquarium are ridiculous! So cool!

Can mangrove roots eventually break the glass or acrylic of your aquarium? 🤔
According to Julian, yes, it is possible. Not likely, but possible. ~Remy

Yep! ~Remy
Mangroves and Julian are a match made in heaven. I’ve learned a lot from him over the years.

Robin Williams is very knowledgeable about mangroves apparently😂

Do they give the mangroves away to certain people? Or can anyone inquire for a free mangrove? lol.
I’ve taken mangrove pods from the floor of the fl aquarium. 🫢
