I started scaping and fishkeeping for the first time about a month ago, and I’m up to 5 healthy tanks 😅. I credit MD with how healthy they all are and how happy my fish, shrimp, and snails are. I even decided to run co2 on two of them, but his videos are super helpful for the low tech setups too! I think this was the first channel I stumbled across when researching. Now I’ll never go back to the silk plants of my childhood. And it’s so clearly explained! Thanks, MD 😊.

Pearl-weed and Pearls of wisdom...very nice. Having had many different aquariums over 50 years and living in different locations (with varying water parameters) has taught me that matching the plants (and fish) to your pH will always give the easiest, most rewarding experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

Thanks for this. I just planted a heap of pearl weed because I loved how fast it grew for you. I needed to know how to maintain it once it takes over, so this is perfect. I have some Hydrocotyle and all the leaves have melted, but I understood that now it should grow it’s under water leaves, but it’s a hard plant to trim when it’s so young and small, but you have inspired me to have a go at removing the melted leaves today.

I love me some pearlweed. Makes a fantastic plant for everything. Fantastic carpeting plant. Let the carpet grow a few inches and shrimp, shrimp babies, and fish babies disappear. Great for egg scatterers. Makes nice walls and it'll grow while floating making a nice hide for free swimming babies. You can wrap wood and rope with it and it will grow new shoots. Shits fantastic yo!

Hey! I love the hardscape in this tank. It's absolutely beautiful. I think that the plant choice made the tank a LOT more work than it needed to be, though. Dwarf hairgrass is fairly simple to get growing, especially if you start it up with Co2 while it spreads. That's what I would've chosen for this tank. The nice thing about it is that it requires absolutely no trimming, and makes for a tank with much less maintenance. You could also put in some taller types of hairgrass towards the back, or even some other types of carpeting plants in between the dwarf hairgrass for some added interest / texture.

I really enjoyed this video. It's nice to hear about you experiences and pass on some general advice. I hope people pick up on the comment that not all plants will grow for everyone in the same way. I've got green fingers when it comes up vallis and swords, but until recently I've really struggled with java fern. Mine only seems to grow well with co2 and high level lighting.

I loved owning a piranha - they're so personable and smart. I got one for free off Craigslist because the family was renovating and Chairman Mao lived with me for another 5 years. You really should keep them with more of their own kind, but hanging out with him in my free time became my hobby, and he lived in the living room where a lot of people came in and out and interacted with him, so we all became sort of his "school". They also recognize individuals. We found that out when we owned two similarly-patterned pitbull dogs, one of which was a puppy at the time - one day they walked by his tank, one after the other, and the puppy was large enough to be finally seen by him at his eye level and I tell you what, he did the fish equivalent of a double-take. He was FASCINATED by the fact that there were TWO dogs and he spent the whole day following the younger dog around when she walked by. Completely charming fish.

I think the reason your right hand has an easier time, not only due to using your right hand more and being more comfortable with that hand, is because you started on the right side. Every time your right hand makes a cut, it’s guided by the last cut. I think you’ll have an easier time with your left if you start on the left side so your last cut will guide your new cut. When you start on the right side then use your left hand, you’re cutting “blind” (no guide created from your last cut)

Hey MD would you mind putting a big group of Diamond Tetras in one of your tanks? Its my favorite fish, and similar to rainbowfishs, i think they take time to really pop their shimmer. But once they are settled in they are stunning af!

You could consider live streaming when you're doing maintenance like this! I know I'd enjoy that :)
Also echoing what I'm sure a lot of people say - but you and Matt's channels have gotten me into the hobby! I now have a Fluval Flex 9gal with 6 or 8 (I have 4 adults and 2 babies for sure... but I should have 6 adults, I just can't find them!) pygmy corydoras, and I just added 8 chili rasbora! I also started with amano shrimp and somehow got some cherry shrimplets?? I think they hitchhiked. And about 800million random snails that also hitchhiked... anyway I love just sitting and watching my tank and my fish. Brings me a lot of joy! And I have to thank you two lads for that!

About the pH: remember that pH is logarithmic, so a difference of 1 pH is actually 10x more ions in the water column.

I got so surprised, and so happy from this video! So relaxing and also really interesting and inspiring to hear all of your talk. And on the subject of putting a lot(!) of plants in most aquariums... Well, the reason you do that is one of the reasons I love this channel. And because of all your videos, I learn more about how to scape my own aquariums. (Yes, I have a few now. And I blame this channel for some of that as well 😅)

I have started using slower growing plants over the years for this reason. I love stem plants, but when you have more than 10 tanks, it becomes a chore. ❤
