1966 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible restoration part 66 installing rear springs & gas tank

  • Painted the rear part of the undercarriage. Was a super messy job. Looks good. Also replaced the rear coil springs and shocks, with Motorcraft shocks. Along with that, I reinstalled the gas tank and filler neck. I did clean out the differential housing... that will be in the next video.
    I got to pop out the front u-joint, as this car used two different ones. Along with that the rear joint is different from either of the two front possibilities.
    Hope to get the axle and brakes finished up this weekend. I will start on the exhaust system maybe Monday. I need to get at least one universal hanger to cobble in, until I can find the correct hanger.... Someone cut the rubber on the right muffler hanger.
    Then comes overhauling the Autolite 4V carburetor. I think after that, It might be time to start the engine, for the first time in 44 years.

    The breather tube gave me fits. I have a 65 Mercury Monterey. Went through 2 sets of axle seals before I found the breather tube was pinched. Keep up the great work. Love the video series.

    Once I discovered your channel a few weeks ago I've binge watched your restorations until I finally hit having to wait for the next video.I enjoy the cars you have done because they aren't typical cars seen at every car show and on every channel. I have a survivor 63 Starfire and your Pontiac build and now the 66 Galaxie are so similiar since they were built in the same era. Very refreshing. Thank you.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the 63 Starfire's. I almost bought one for a project last year. The reason I didn't buy it, was it was all apart, so who knows whats missing, and it did not have the original engine.... it was a newer one, so the mounting points were in the wrong places.

    • @mikesonneson2824
      @mikesonneson2824 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OldCarAlley Wish you had found one with an original engine so I could watch you restore it. There is sooooo little info or videos on these incredible cars. "All apart" I would hesitate only for the fact that these cars are a bit complex in build and nuance. I'd enjoy sharing with you some pictures of mine and the work I've done if you are interested. How would I go about doing that?

      As an aside one of the first cars I had in my youth was a hand me down 66 Ford Galaxie 500 my grandparents bought brand new. I actually went with them when they picked it up. They hauled travel trailers and my grandfather special ordered the car with heavy duty suspension,heavy duty transmision and trans cooler,air lift suspension and 390 engine.

      @@OldCarAlley it'll have to be my 1966 F100 that I bought from my uncle back in 1988 when he was about to take it to the scrap yard because it was smoking! Turned out it had some burnt valves which I heard is typical on those 352 V8 so I did a valve job on it drove it for 10 years then rebuilt the motor in 1998 and it's still running to this very day! My very first car was a 1964 Ford Falcon which I absolutely love and wish I still had to this very day!! I called my F100 Old Faithful because I just pulled the choke give her a couple of Taps on the gas and she's raring to go when I turn the key!! Thanks for all the wonderful videos on your channel just out of curiosity have you ever done any Mopar cars?

      @@SnowMan68 I like the F-100's from that era. Years back when they were cheap, I did some charger's and Cuda's.... Painted a friends 73 Cuda. It had huge rust holes in the tope of the front fenders and rear 1/4's behind the tires. Had a slice in the hood, from where the fan went threw when he broke both motor mounts beating on it. It had a 340. I had a low milage, unrestored, old lady owned, 58 Dodge. It had a 230 flathead inline six with a Bendix 2 barrel... and a pushbutton two speed automatic. The car sported it's original pink and white paint job.

    Was that Tchaikovsky I heard in the background? :-)
    Howard, what are you going to do with the wheels? What color did Ford them? I would guess gloss black since the hub caps cover them. What about the tires? Whitewalls? Did Ford use Continental Tires for Galaxies in '66?

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could very well have been.... it a Jazz station, that plays some classical.
      I will bead blast the wheels and paint them gloss black. I want to put the correct size white wall tires on it too. It's staying with the original hubcaps.
