1966 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible restoration part 60 removing the gas tank

  • Got a lot of little things done, and started on the rear part of the undercarriage . Pulled the gas tank.... super nasty. It stunk the garage up so bad, I had to open the overhead door. Stuffed a rag in the filler hole. Next week I will drop it off at the radiator shop. I will fix the rust hole, in the gas filler pocket, before reinstalling the tank. Why the tank is out, I will do what I need to with the rear suspension and replace the springs and shocks. I will paint it before the tank goes back it too. Then the exhaust will go on, and I'll get it running and moving under it's own power for the first time in 44 years.

    OCD, people that don't have it are so lucky cause for them things are simple. I too suffer with it and good enough is never quite good enough. Clips for wires that have disintegrated will drive me nuts till it is repaired right. Someone else could run a zip tie in and call it a day but not me. Hence when I am done, I can rest easy. I have all the respect in the world for your work and deliberation. It will be new

    Ironically, the items that you listed that were bad were the reasons why the car is in such good shape. These problems kept the car from getting more wear and tear on it 43 + years ago.

    Back around 1972 I attempted to do what you are doing only with a 1958 Jaguar XK-150. The project was a total disaster, the car was being held together by a thread, all the internal sheet metal was totally rusted out. Sold the pile for parts. I'll be 80 in April.

    I would pull the tank the rear end replace the axle seals replace the pinion seal the differential gasket all that stuff it's easier just have the rear end out of the car so you can clean it and paint properly. Plus I don't like doing that all underneath the car with stuff falling on you getting in your eyes . Just a thought .
    The car is coming along nicely 😎

    You know my moms and dads 1966 galaxie 500 we used to have to pull back the gear shift lever to get it to crank to start you might try that question mark ours was a 390 engine though that was the only difference and it had air condition I don't think that makes any difference but that was the only way it would start and I know you've never started this that might be all that's wrong with it so give it a try I hope it helps.

      It probably had a neutral switch that was going bad. Common on these cars. There open and near the floor, so they get full of dirt, and that wares them out. I checked it all out. The ignition switch is bad....

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am hoping a good cleaning will do. I hope they don't need to coat it, as the coatings never last. That stuff makes a huge mess of the fuel system, when the coating starts breaking down. The coating is good for about ten to fifteen years. If it's that bad, I will replace the tank with a new one.

    I regularly use a thin metal clothes hanger straightened all the way out to ream out the tiny water overflow tube that drains the gas filler cap housing. Rain or car wash water collects in there when that long tube is clogged and will rot out the filler cap housing. You can also get water in your gas tank that way since it is a vented cap.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the bottom of the filler cap is higher the the bottom of the opening for the gas door, so I doubt much could get into the tank. The tank has minor surface rust in places on all sides, but the bottom has a black goo... 43 year old gas...

    • @chuckster3629
      @chuckster3629 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OldCarAlley
      If that tube gets clogged, you'll have water sloshing around the gas cap and some could leak into the tank. Besides, who wants the housing to rot?

    Welp... I'm under the rear end of my other 66 Galaxie. Got the fuel tank straps off. Got the filler neck unbolted from inside the filler door. Got the rubber tank strap isolaters off. Got the sending unit out. This thing ain't budging. It's just dangling there. I can hang on it. There's nothing above it bolted in. The filler neck seems to be the only thing holding on. How did you get the filler neck out of the tank??? Btw, just a funny side note. I was like "YES a Galaxie tank removal video!" I think I must have been a little loud because I could see fingers and eyes through the neighbors' blinds. The you jump cut from the tank being in and just miraculously not in anymore. At that point I nailed my forehead on the brake drum.

    i got original type hose clamps for my 65 merc..i think i got mine out of a mustang supplier..i needed 12 and only got 10 as you did ....i'm guessing the rear in your car has 3;00;1 ration and 28 spline axles open rear..the 3;00;1 ratio was so common back then ....you are doing a real nice job...i couldnt go to bed until i seen another one of your videos ...ok...seen it now off to bed lol

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does have a 3.00:1 axle ratio. So far everything looks good in the rear. the drums turn freely, but are stuck to the axle shaft. Might need a little heat to get them off. Hoping I can start cleaning things up, and do some sanding underneath this weekend and next week... getting it ready for paint and brakes. I got to order springs this morning.

    Alrighty then. Huge waste of time... Tank has a $3 half coat paint job, 9 pounds of rust and varnish, and the sender gasket will never seal again as a big chunk of mating surface fell off in the tank. At least I know how to do it now. The primary Galaxie will have it's fuel tank removed one of these days as well. Gotta wrench it to know it I suppose.
