1966 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible restoration part 29 removing control arm bushings

- Got the bushings out of the control arms. Now for the time consuming part of cleaning them up for paint. Got tons of parts that need bead blasting. I am not going to video all the blasting. Maybe a little here and there of how it's going and looking. I want to paint the frame and undercarriage before reinstalling the drivetrain...

Howard, Bead blast one of the Shock absorbers.... It should reveal either a FORD or AUTOLITE logo if they are originals. All (4) of the original 1966 Shocks were all painted ALL Gloss Black as an assembly line shock... The Green on the Upper control arm was just a paint daub by the factory for internal Quality control. Lots of parts on the entire chassis underside of the car had all different colored Paint daubs for internal reasons. Colors used were usually White, Light Green, Red/Orange, Light Blue and even Purple. The Front and Rear Springs also had colored Paint daubs on them and the driveshaft had Stenciled Letters and numbers on it as well from the factory when new. Tony K. , Melbourne, Florida.
I will blast a shock when I am done with the control arms.... as I am wondering if there the factory shocks. It was a light green dab of paint. There are some white dabs and one yellow, I "think" on the trans crossmember.... Interesting, thank you for the info.

I believe the sales name was Sauterne Gold.
The actual name Ford called the color is "Med. Sage Gold Met." It's defiantly a light metallic green. The metallic is gold.... guess thats were the gold comes from.
If i was me, dont think I'd mess with the ball joint, spending time working around it plus peace of mind with new, still great job

I just noticed the 352 badge on the side. I don't remember my 66 having this? Never mind, you'rs is a convertible, mine was a hard top. lol Looking forward to the finish line.
Odd... I have noticed that too, when looking at videos of 66 Fords... some have the badge, some don't.
I figured the convertible being in a higher line than the hardtop, might have the badge as opposed to my base line hardtop. Some owners/rebuilders may see the 352 badge, think it looks cool, and install it on a car that never had it?
@@TOM-C. They were on a wagon our neighbor had back in the day, as I remember.... But it was a top of the line Country Squire. I remember playing with the power windows as a kid. It had A/C too.
Yeah, I was thinking the 352 badge may be relegated to the higher line cars, just as the 7.0 liter advertised it's motor, but who wouldn't want that advertised. lol I still want Jay's car, but would be perfectly happy with an original 66 hardtop like I had. lol Did the 66 Galaxie have an electric window or air conditioning option?

If I lived closer to you, I'd come spend a day bead blasting parts for you, and maybe use my old refinishing talents, too. GR is a bit of a drive
I just do it a hour here and there... my back get to hurting if I stand in one spot to long.
I gotta ask, for cost of a new ball joint, why wouldn't you just replace them when everything is off?
There was zero ware on them, they're the factory original riveted joints, so why spent $50 per lower joint, or $30 per upper joint, when they don't need replacing? I have a finite amount of money too, so I try to save and reuse as much as possible, to keep my restoration cost under control.

What is the official name of the original paint of this Ford?
"Med. Sage Gold Met." I spelled exactly as Ford does in the paint code book.

It's one of the few jobs on a car that I am not fond of doing. Exhaust systems is the other. Doing both myself, and there both a pain!
@@OldCarAlley Yes.. and body work is my least favorite as well. I enjoy the painting though. But blocking and filler work not so much.

@@trifivegarage8683 I don't mind making new panels and welding them in. I do it, so almost no filler is needed, because I dislike sanding. I enjoy painting.... it's close to my favorite part of a project.
What percentage of most restorations is mahuckey work? Clearly the 66 Galaxie does not have significant mahuckey with it. If you can't tolerate mahuckey work you're better of steering clear of restoring anything vintage.
Theres lots of nasty dirty work.... that's 80% of it.
