Yes, the Officer is SHOUTING the word of command which the soldiers are well used to and fully expect. They are not being shouted at because of some misdemeanour, as the video title suggests - I was fully expecting the officer to be shouting at a soldier for some shortcoming in his standard of turnout. The video should be re-titled, ‘Officer shouts word of command’.

I enjoyed it, and respect the ancient tradition it preserves. But the actual inspection was less precise than what the US Old Guard does at Arlington, where every detail of the sentry’s appearance is scrutinized meticulously, from the level of his cap to the back of his shoes. But maybe there is a British Tomb of Unknowns where they do something similar to that. I hope to visit England next year, looking forward to seeing these presentations in person!

For a long time, before radios were invented, troop formations were controlled by verbal commands. Battlefields are noisy and chaotic, and soldiers can be spread out over large areas. Being able to bellow very, very loud but still coherent commands at people is a traditional skill that is still appreciated in the British military.

Even horses not as well trained as these ones won't kick you if you don't act like a complete idiot. The trick is to let them know you are there so as to not startle them. The best way to do that is by walking really close to their behind and preferably touching them with your hand as you cross. Cav horses could probably handle way worse before breaking.

Very professional performance. The officer gives clear instructions in a voice that can be heard clearly at some distance, above the noise of battle, and when he inspected the guards, he clearly was actually inspecting for real and could be seen giving feedback to the guard commander, and to individual guards, in a quiet voice that is barely picked up by the microphone. And then I watched a programme from 1940, and as a young Princess she inspected 3 lines of troops, I think she was with her father, and there must have been at least 100 soldiers in each line, in combat gear, either returning from duty or on their way, and I think they presented arms or something similar, there was 4 or 5 separate movements, it was over in literally a second, and not one was out of sync. As a soldier of the 1960s, I watch events such as this, HM Queen Elizabeth's funeral etc and invariably wind up shaking my head, thinking how the drill has become dismal. Any movements involving shaking your legs about (right & left turns, halt etc) were always carried out with the thigh parallel to the ground and the lower leg absolutely perpendicular to the ground. Modern drill seems to have degenerated into what we used to call "cow kicks"! Of course, we never expected any better from officers and this Captain was just like those of my day. Oh! And officers can not salute to save their bloody lives!

The Queen’s passing has re-ignited a fascination in this for me. I think it is incredibly moving and has great cultural value.
