  • Shane Parrish sits down with the renowned biochemist Dr. Rhonda Patrick to explore the intricate world of nutrition and health. Dr. Patrick provides a deep dive into the role micronutrients play in our daily health, detailing how deficiencies and insufficiencies in vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and amino acids can lead to serious health issues over time. Shane and Dr. Patrick also discuss the science behind deliberate heat exposure. She outlines the optimal sauna conditions-temperature, duration, and frequency-necessary for these health benefits and explains how the physiological mechanisms work.
Rhonda Patrick has a Ph.D. in biomedical science and a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry/chemistry from the University of California, San Diego. She has done extensive research on aging, cancer, and nutrition.

Rhonda, I have important information on your "do not mix blueberries with bananas" advice and your consecutive change of your smoothie recipe. The reason why you shouldn't mix berries with bananas is that fruit containing polyphenoloxidase (PPO) degrades the polyphenols in the berries. However, we don't just find high concentrations of PPO in bananas but also e. g. in chard which is featured prominently in your smoothie recipe, right along with blueberries. So if you want to avoid to have the blueberries' polyphenols degraded you better eat them without any of the other ingredients in your smoothie. You might want to rethink the recipe you give out to newsletter subscribers (I'm one of them, yayy 😊). Warmest wishes, Anne

According to chatGPT, mixing bananas with blueberries does not negatively impact the polyphenol content of blueberries.
    See below:
Polyphenol Content: Blueberries are rich in polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, which are known for their antioxidant properties. Mixing them with bananas does not negate these benefits.
Polyphenol Oxidase: While bananas contain polyphenol oxidase (PPO), the enzyme responsible for browning, this reaction primarily affects the phenolic compounds within the banana itself. It does not impact the polyphenols in blueberries.
Nutrient Interaction: There is no evidence to suggest that the combination of bananas and blueberries negatively affects the absorption or efficacy of polyphenols. In fact, combining different fruits can provide a broader range of nutrients and health benefits.

regular usage of mushrooms (3x week) as food or supplement also heavily decreases chances of cancer.
The thing with Magnesium is likely related to preventing calcium deposits.
So, on that front, the other things would be Vitamin K2 on days when you go in the sun, especially, in normal doses - don't go overboard on this one.
    Chanca piedra

    • @DutchmanAmsterdam
      @DutchmanAmsterdam หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Don't go overboard with K2 based on what study? I never heard about that and wonder if you are just making things up.
Also when you go in the sun your skin creates the inactive D3 cholecalciferol, this gradualy gets metabolised into calcifediol in the liver over one up to four weeks. So the K2 you take that day makes little difference. Luckily K2 is already active and will stay in the blood and liver for a couple of weeks while the D3 metabolisation continues.
The British NHS states that no upper limit for K2 is known and 1000mcg daily is completely safe. That makes sense since many Japanese ingest huge amounts from the natto they eat. Easily 1000 to 2000 mcg or even double that in one single breakfast portion. So What's your worry about K2 based on? Ideally one should take at least 400 mcg K2 mk7 daily, for proper calcium placement in the bones. Also Magnesium is needed for this. I would btw not depend on the sun for D3 rather take a supplement, 5000 IU or 10,000 daily depending on your 25(OH)D3 blood level. The same UV rays that form D3 also cause DNA damage leading to skin cancer, that is well known. D3 from supplements is 100% equal to the one you get from sunshine without the skin damage.
A little bit of sunshine may be healthy but I would be careful not to overdo it. BTW D3 overdose is so rare that it really doesn't occur. Having a blood level of 100 ng/ml is probably ideal and is what dr Bozz advises, I strive for that myself. Have your blood checked for calcium and phosphor at the same time to have confirmed that there is no D3 toxicity (which would show as hyper calcemia/phosphoremia) Good luck. 👍

It's all relative to the compound the mag is chelated to. Like she mentioned, the organic materials have better bioavailability and once the mag breaks off from its chelated substrate, now that molecule can go places and do work.

And, I am so happy she explained the K1/K2 for Vit D3 to get calcium directed to the right places in our bodies. With all the K2 talk these days to shuttle calcium to the bones and not the wrong places in our bodies, I too, took K2 and within a few days I was getting small hemorrhages in one of my eyes, upon stopping the K2 they went away. A couple of weeks later, I restarted the K2 and had the same small bleds in my eye. I feel so better knowing I can get the same effects of K2 with getting enough K1. I like Dr. Rhonda Patrick a lot. I only listened up to just getting into the smoothie portion, but I think the Omega-3 thing may just be hype or nonsense altogether. I'm not saying this for sure, as I was a pescatarian (now a low fat/low sodium/no oil vegan), but think about it for a minute: a lot of places in the world likely for long periods in history didn't have access to good Omega-3 sources.
Not sure on Omega-3 though (I admit it), but if I was concerned about Omega-3, I'd still get it from fish, as it takes a lot of fish to make one capsule of fish oil (not a big fan of concentrated sources either). By the way, the Japanese tend to eat small portions of seafood, though they tend to eat it several times a week (my mom is Japanese and I lived there for awhile).
Also, men have to be careful with supplementing Omega-3 due to increase risk of prostate cancer (not sure if that includes vegan sources nor the dosage).
I think the protein requirement is really hype. Protein (and fat consumption for that matter) at the very least is a two-edged sword (mTOR) pathway via a couple of amino acids: it might help with the muscles some but shoots up your odds of getting cancer overall. Dr. Valter Longo talked about this in a couple of podcasts (I think "The Proof" was one). I believe he said a 4x increase of all cause mortality for meat eaters and 3x for vegans (they also tend to over consume protein as they believe they aren't consuming enough). Anyway, not sure what cut off Longo uses on gms/kg, nor what it all means, but the mTOR pathway is pretty well established. So it may be a trade off of more muscle resilience, if you will, versus a shorter life.
By the way, you should consider having Peter Rogers, MD on your show. He can come off as a bit acerbic and arrogant, but suggest people check out his medical podcasts. Whether you agree with him or not, you will learn a lot. He would be an interesting guest.

It's about 26 minutes in on "Extend Your Lifespan" podcast episode of "The Proof" from Simon Hill regarding protein consumption. My apologies, but his comments concern mortality from "cancer", not "all cause mortality". I believe the amount of protein is based on 20% of calories versus smaller percentages. Longo also mentioned this on Rich Roll.
In order to see the mechanisms of biochemistry (and some good anatomy), check out Peter Rogers, MD.

The conclusion from the one in China stated that those with high Selenium from their food had the same lung cancer rates of non smoking Americans - And the one from the US had a 40% decrease in lung cancer rates. Some time later I correlated the two conclusions and they were so closely matched as to be identical conclusions. The OMEGA 3's mentioned could very well be from food as the likes of wild Salmon, Sardines and Kippers etc also have a good supply of Selenium. Just live in the country-side if you want to breathe clean air. Or if you live in the city, just plant several Moringa trees around the perimeter of your house since Moringa leaves absorb the heavy metals on air. But don't eat the leaves, only the fruits, to prevent dementia.

I’m in the U.K. What exactly is the omega 3 index & how is it checked? I’ve had bloods taken but I’ve never seen a test for omega 3. Does it have a different name? What should I be looking for?

just eat a tin of sardines twice a week and fish for dinner once or twice a week. Or take fish oil capsules, but I prefer to eat the fish. no need to worry.

@@loneranger7573 Thank you for your response. Yes, I understand what I can do to get Omega 3 but my question was what is the Omega 3 index? Does a deficiency show up on bloods? If so, what do I look for?

DHA and EPA can also be found in non-fish. I have a supplement that is not based in fish.

Try to find a fish based one though as they’re much more bio-available 😊 Much healthier.

Farmed atlantic salmon is genetically modified and the astaxanthin gives it colour. Those fish have been crossed with eel and other types of DNA.

Wild seafood was always healthier, but now I'm concerned about MICROPLASTICS.
Would that mean farmed seafood might have less plastic than wild?

Do people not understand that organic does not mean "pesticide free"? They simply use different pesticides.

Many mornings I have a chia seed pudding, which is a glass of almond milk with two tablespoons of chia sees and two tablespoons flax seed... Thats a whopping 13,000 mg of Omega 3 (ALA). Is that too much Omega 3?

Just boil first the leafy greens before consumption to lower the oxalate content. Discard the boiled water.

Spinach, leafy green 36:32 is high in oxalates and will give you kidney stones. Started eating spinach Dec 2021 and had kidney stones 3 times in 2022.

Very useful thanks - but please do research on farmed salmon. On the whole it seems to be appalling with overuse of antibiotics and insecticide; the fish are often mutilated from water fleas etc. Honestly, I wouldn’t touch any of it, canned sardines probably better…

      Horrible!
Interesting that the farmed is more expensive than wild. Sardines being small don't absorb heavy metals.

heard that selenium helps counteract mercury. and the fish higher in mercury, naturally have high selenium..

    • @evelynsoriano4571
      @evelynsoriano4571 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

It depends on the amount of mercury in the large fish.
