  • In this podcast, we explore a deeply significant issue within the PBCC: Alcohol dependency and addiction.
Join our UK team as they share personal connections to this subject. Ross, a recovering addict, and Abi, the child of an addict, bring a unique perspective to our discussion.
We'll dive into four essential questions that anyone in the PBCC should contemplate to assess their relationship with alcohol:
Do you fear a life without alcohol?
Have you struggled to control your alcohol consumption?
Do you wonder if you can enjoy the PBCC lifestyle without alcohol?
Have you used alcohol to cope with emotions and stress?
These questions serve as a mirror to our own experiences, prompting self-reflection and awareness. We'll also shed light on the concerning levels of alcohol consumption that persist within the PBCC community and the root causes of this.
Join us as we unravel the impact of toxic levels of alcohol consumption within the PBCC, especially amongst the younger generation. We ask the question everyone is thinking...if Bruce Hales quit drinking and looked at his usage of alcohol, would others follow in his footsteps? With the PBCC community so locked in on their Man Of God, could he be the person to turn these horrible tragedies around?

I am from Australia. My father left the Exclusives in 1960 when I was 2 yrs of age. He told me that at that time, under Jim Taylor Jnr's leadership, the bretren were told they were not to eat with those outside the brethren, and to drink alcohol to "demonstrate their christian liberty". My father refused to do either, and left, labelling it as "popery" and refused to have any more to do with them. My father apparently said "they will turn into a bunch of alcoholics". His father died in 1971 as a whisky alcoholic, whereas he was a teatotaller prior to obeying Taylor. My step uncle was known to have stood on a street corner preaching whilst blind drunk. The brethren went into far more levels of degradation since. The Taylor meetings in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1970 clearly demonstrated this. He was playing up with women as well as an alcoholic, whilst being revered as the "man of God". People I met in Sydney in 1978 had left them in 1974, and told me they would call in at the bottleshop to get a load of alcohol after the morning meeting. Satan took them over. They have been lead by evil men ever since Taylor Jnr. Darby would roll over in his grave if he saw where the Brethren Movement ended. Their light has become darkness and how great that darkness is. They are a false church, deceiving many. The leaders are corrupt in every way. I thank God my father had his eyes opened and in doing so saved my mother and 5 siblings from going under slavery of the Brethren. Satan got in to them and destroyed what had been movement which brought much blessing to christians far an wide, and is now rightly labelled a cult.

Well said. And absolutely correct. Alcohol is one more tool in the arsenal to be weaponized as a control tool, and the compliant brethren latch on like babies with no regard to law, safety or sensibility. If MOG can do it they unquestionably need to do the same.
And the responsibility when things go pear shaped is down to the individual.
Brucie and his mates won’t bail you out, they will bail out on you. Your problem. Your consequences.
Wake up brethren, party all you want to. You put a drink or three between BDH and the safety of your family, your health and your livelihood just realize that BDH is gonna be the one ending up comfortably.

The crash that happened in nz were a family that lived on my street. Brethren tried to stop people helping after the crash and covering it up and stopping people calling the emergency services.

From the perspective of a recent leaver with an alcohol problem, I think everything you say is spot on. My alcohol journey started as drinking being 'normal' in breaks etc, then bigger and more drinks to prove something (peer pressure). Over the years as I became more jaded and confused about the whole PBCC thing, as I realised that I didn't fit in, alcohol became a dependency. Maybe those help groups were shut down because alcos were bound to find out and share why they have the problem?...Deep down its because they are being forced to live a lie? I think many many PBCC realise, even subconsciously, that they're living a lie. Thus high rate of the addiction and depression amongst PBCC.

My memory is the brethren were teetotal, like most strict puritans. I remember, as a small child, visiting a rural West Country brother, with my father, and our host had a giggle, with my dad, about his secret little supply of local cider. In other words, it was not normally allowed. My grandmother refused to drink non-alcoholic ginger wine, because it was labelled "wine". I never saw alcohol in any social situation. There might have been a little homemade fruit or flower wine, on farms and in country areas, but that was still considered "risqué". After the alcoholic JamesTaylor Jnr. pushed the flock into keeping him company, I was later told of cases where "old timer" brethren, who didn't want to partake, were mocked, with whisky being poured over their heads. Quite shocking, really; such a rapid descent into an immoral and out-of-control cult.

I remember when it changed. I had to ask at about age 9 (1961) but shortly after that it came in.

I would hazard a guess that the breathalysers were made on an industrial estate in Totnes, Devon and still are. Opposite is the brethren who were responsible for the Rapid Relief Team and the charity status issues. Preston Down Trust.

It is really ludicrous. People who are not trained can cause more issue.
My father was a psych nurse and with 25 years experience who did lots of post grad training and working with suicide, alcoholics etc but was classed as having a defect so definitely never did priestlies. He wasn’t even allowed take part. They wanted him to leave his job.
He also didn’t drink whisky but had an odd beer. They called him a Prohibitionist. This was all before he died in 1970.
