Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra VS Google Pixel 7 Pro - Save Your $$?

  • If there’s one thing we all praise about Android, it’s variety. From affordable beasts to expensive kitchen sinks, you can pick how much you want to pay, and what you get for that money. It’s honestly why it makes it hard to compare phones because price isn’t everything. You’d think that more expensive means better, but that’s not always the case, and no other battle shows those differences more than the one we’re about to begin.
On one corner we have the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung’s latest and greatest flagship, and already one of the best phones of 2023. On the other corner we have the Pixel 7 Pro, Google’s best phone ever, which is actually a statement I won’t argue with this year. Their $300 price difference might make this look like an unfair comparison, but what if that’s exactly how much money you could save? I’m Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow and let’s dive into our comparison.

The Galaxy s23 Ultra is worth every penny this year. The speed, battery life, S pen for editing videos with lumafusion (which is finally out for Android ) and most importantly the speakers are so much better than the S22 ultra.

It's a terrible phone, having lots of the same problems the previous version did, and they haven't been fixed with newer manufacturing or updated firmware. That you had a pretty meaningless error that doesn't stop the phone from working in any way doesn't make the phone bad, and definitely not by comparison. Now the pixel has really impressed me, the Android experience with the pixel is unmatched period. Speech to text is so accurate and not to mention texting in different languages on the same message, somehow the software really gets what you're trying to say and do without having to go back and correct anything for most of the time. I'm happy with my pixel 7 pro. Finally Google got it right.

It is easy to say that the decision is always subjective and a personal one. I know that a Note would've been better than my Galaxy S20+, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I missed Google's user interface so much! Also the design is bolder and more attractive on the Pixel 7 Pro. The Google Assistant call answer (forgot the actual name) is incredibly handy! If I needed video editing or a TB of storage maybe the S23 Ultra would've been the phone for me. But the UI, clean Android experience, and rewarding innovation were too high on my list to pass on the Google Pixel 7 Pro. Highly recommend this phone!

Just sold my Pixel 7 Pro and got the S23 Ultra mainly because: Portrait Video on the S23 is better with better edge detection and it supports 4K Portrait Video where the Pixel 7 Pro is capped at 1080P. Also, you'd think that the Pixel would handle post processing/editing with Google Photos better with its in-house processor but it takes about 5-7 seconds when you hit the EDIT button on the Pixel 7 Pro while its gathering info on what can be achieved with the edit like smart suggestions whereas on the Galaxy S23 thanks to its Snapdragon 8 Processor, the moment you hit EDIT, you can immediately apply the effects with 0 delay. Also, the portrait shots from the front-facing camera on the Pxiel 7 Pro are rubbish, they are oversharpened and look ugly compared to not only the S23 Ultra, but to any other phone I've tried recently. Finally, the battery life on the Pixel 7 Pro is atrocious, I have all the apps on deep sleep mode yet I still have to charge it at least twice per day if not three with only an hour of Spotify usage and Instgram randomly through the day.

I love the pixel range. Ive loved the pixel range since the pixel 3. However, i have not had a pixel handset from the 5 up that didnt have either crippling hardware issues, or massive software issues. Everything from certain mainstream apps not opening correctly. (10+ minutes to open in some cases even after a factory reset), to losing wifi, and cellular connection. Also the entire range has been horrihle with conference calls. Never had issues with samsung devices, its not the network, i have had several Network engineers on the line with me from Version and it will still kill the call out of seemngly nowhere with full bars...
That being said, i love the phone. Its fantastic when it works correctly. Its hands down the easiest android experience.
Frankly, its frustrating when you expect a flagship to perform better but the pixel consistently lets me down. Be it with apps opening, (TH-cam, CBS, Pokemon go which sometimes requires reinstallls, even ESPN'S fantasy sports app), or connectivity issues. We knew about those issues with the outdated modem on the pixel 6 range. Also beware. I did receive an insurance replacement. Which all are generally refurbished units, which WILL NOT retain its waterproofing. Which was apparently my fault, despite not damaging the device. (Separate issue tbh)
I love the pixel range. I want to keep using the pixels, i will likely be suckered back by the 8 or 9 or 10. But if these frankly glaring issues the majority of which are software based cannot be resolved... Its gonna be hard to go back to the pixel range.
Personally id be happy to submit my device for study as to WTF is wrong with the pixels.

The only bad thing is I had upgraded my 2 to the 4 because the camera stopped working and now on my Pixel 4 which I had it since March 2020, the battery does not hold any charge. I have to carry a portable charger with me where I go. I know you can buy a new battery online. But I don't trust myself replacing it by myself. But even then I know a lot of places (at least near me) don't fix Pixels which sucks. Both of my Pixels started to fail on me after having them a little over 3 years when I wasn't ready for an upgrade but I had to if I wanted a functioning phone which is not fair to me. I'm torn if I should go through the vicious cycle and get another Pixel and maybe having it die on me after 3 years or get galaxy s23, which may last me a little longer hopefully. I love the Pixel because of the camera but I want something I can rely on for at least 5 years or a little more if I'm lucky. If the new Pixel can promise me 5 years or little more together I would choose it no questions asked.

They are virtually indistinguishable! I do the same with my wife's pixel pro 7 and again it's just as fast for anybody not counting frame per second with hardcore gaming. Benchmarks and specs simply don't translate into real world performance. The main benefit of the s23u is battery life. The main detractor is its size which is why I still use a S21u despite having an s23u. oh my son has a s22u... Same difference in the real world.

I'm hearing that the s23 is no longer a battery slouch and is just as good as iPhone. This is due to the optimization this year.

Maybe it's your personal preference that makes the difference here, but on most Photo samples I was with the Pixel.
Very odd to have such different views on the same pics.
Additionally the stock android is in my eyes much more user friendly and smart than One UI.
    But well, tastes are different.

Nope pics much better on Samsung and 1UI much better OS just saw a video on Android 14 and guess what most changes are from what Samsung had !!! And Piss All users on that video say wow Samsung has had that???!!!

@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN I said that in my eyes (and if you check several YT Tech reviewers, too) the pictures of the Pixel are better. It's often a personal preference.
I have the Pixel 7 and I had several Samsungs before; I think the stock Android is much more user friendly.

I left my galaxy 22 ultra for the pixel 7 pro and I'm happy i did it.
The photography is better by far then the galaxy. It's even better then the iPhone 14 pro max.
The battery life is shorter but it's better then pixel 6.
