I use cheap fabrics all the time! When I op shop (thrift/charity shop) I find all sorts of amazing fabric, bed sheets, a seamstress's stash, a quilter's stash, all sorts of amazing cheap fabric. It's not how much the fabric costs, it's how much you love it, that makes a quilt amazing!!
I do the same! There are all types of quilters who have preferences for all sorts of fabrics. I tend to be a little more practical and I make quilts to be used, thrown around, jumped on ect. I think back to what our ancestors used when making quilts. They used whatever fabrics were available, torn shirts, ripped pants, and took those scraps and made masterpieces. If they can do it so can I.
This quilt top came out so gorgeous! I love solids and basic prints as filler for quilts. Have I ever made a quilt? No. I’m taking a Block of the Month class and we have completed 3 blocks so far and I’m loving it! I’d love to make something like your quilt top in the future! I just love rainbow quilts! They are by far my favorite!
Your video was a joy to watch. I loved your quilt. One suggestion would be to add side triangles and corner squares and you would not lose the pretty fabric you cut off.
I use any fabric I can find. Cotton fabric in South Africa is very expensive. Love the challenge to create a quilt out of a variety of fabric. Love your colours!
I"m a new subscriber to your channel and I'm following along from Alberta, Canada, and I"m LOVING it!! I love your attitude and outlook in regards to your quilting and how you don't sweat the little stuff....it's something I struggle with and feel I have to try and make everthing perfect, which of course it'snot LOL....But I love what you're doing here and I have so many of your videos saved so that I can recreate some of the things you have made!! Keep them coming...HAPPY QUILTING!!
Hi! Welcome, I'm so glad you've found us! Yes, for me it's much more about the experience than the results and, more often than not, slightly wonky quilts look pretty perfect too! Happy quilting 😁
OK baby girl, that quilt is absolutely divine. You’ve done such a fantastic job putting it together…. For those of us that are beginners and would like to make us one. You failed to tell us how many you used , how many blocks of a certain color that you used ,and where did you place them to make this quilt….. wish you would do it again with more detail and the arrangement of how many colors. Thank you so much really enjoy your videos.❤❤❤ keep them coming❤
I got a fat quarter bundle from Amazon that in one of the Mrs Quilty boxes you opened in one of your Videos, I never ordered it again as it felt cheap. Nice that they add some other stuff in their boxes. If I knew every box would have quality fabrics, I would subscribe.
I have been watching so many of your videos and I’m so excited as I will hopefully get a sewing machine for Christmas!!! Hope to try some of your amazing tutorials, I have been given loads of scraps (like 2 boxes full!) so needed lots of inspiration haha!
Hi! I'm glad to hear that, so exciting! You've come to the right olace, I have plenty of scrappy projects you can use your brand new sewing machine for! Happy quilting 😁
Hi Sandy. Yet again, another gorgeous tutorial with beautiful vibrant colours 😍 A pity I don't know of anywhere local to me, that offers such gorgeous colours. I'm envious 😊💞
I bought inexpensive fat quarters from Wal-Mart, and cut them into 5" squares. I made a fantastic disappearing 9-patch ("Confetti quilt), and it looks fabulous! (If I do say so myself! 🙃)
When cutting, put a heavy weight at the top of your ruler to stop it from moving. I use a 2kg dumbbell but a large tin of tomatoes or 2litre bottle of water will do the job.
so i have wondered about temu fabric and a church friend bought me a layer cake to try and it does not feel bad but that may change once i start cutting and piecing, thank you for another great video
I also purchase fabric by Temu. I only buy fabric which is described as 100% cotton and have been very happy. However, the one exception was 42 5” squares that were so thin a terrible texture…my comments were heard and I was given an immediate credit. I may use that fabric for book markers.
That looks great. Who would think it was cheap fabric. There are all different kinds of fabric. There are cheap fabrics which I have never had any trouble with in regards to colour running, fraying, and too thin but then there has been cheap fabric that I was best to have left in the shop! On the other hand I have bought expensive fabric from a patchwork shop and it frayed like mad and nearly drove me crazy trying to sew it. I would have been better off just buying the cheaper version. You have done a beautiful job with your fabrics. You have a great sense of putting colour together and making things look just right.
Hi! Thank you so much, I definitely share your experience, it's not about how much they cost, it's how they're made really and what better suits our needs. Happy quilting! 😁
The problem with cheap fabrics in a quilt is that they fade much more easily and wear out causing the quilt top to tear or fray. Personally, if I am going to spend so much time and energy making a quilt, I want it to last.
I canceled my Mrs Quilty subscription after 6 months. It seemed to me that the fabric was all the same, small florals. I asked if there was more than one option for fabric, at that time there was not.
Hi. How long ago was that? I haven't received many boxes yet but from what I see in the Facebook community there are quite a few boxes down the line I would love to own 😊
Thank you for sharing your feedback! We’re sorry to hear that the fabric selection didn’t meet your expectations at the time. We’ve recently updated our fabric collection to include a wider variety of styles, and we’d love to welcome you back to give it another try. If you have any questions or would like more details, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our customer support team-we’re here to help!
What do you guys consider cheap fabric? How much per yard if it’s too cheap you’re going to pay for it in the long run because your project will probably fall apart
Well, I can only speak for the ones I use, like the polka dots. I've been using them for years now and they're holding up great! I wash my pet blankets and beds constantly and they look great. The colors fades a little, but I've had that happen with expensive designer fabric too!
@ well if you are in Europe, your fabric is better quality than what we get here in the United States. Have you heard of these two products one helps you keep the color. The other one will remove the color if it accidentally fades into others. Retayne and Synthrapol
@dcwatashi I had no idea location made a difference in fabric quality. Inise my anti bleeding sheets when washing my quilts but I never heard of those brands, I'll have to see what similar products are out here. Thank you 😊
The tougher texture and see-through fabrics are a high “No”. So if it were free I wouldn’t make a quilt from fabrics that aren’t some level of soft or if they’re super thin, it will eventually fall apart from wear & tear or multiple washings.
i think there is cheap fabric and too cheap fabric. I used to buy cheap ones when I started sewing but now with more knowledge and experience i go for the more expensive organic ones. I dont want to support sellers who exploit people and our earth.
I've never had that happen to me but I can totally imagine it with really low quality fabrics... These are more inexpensive than cheap, thank goodness 😄
The term cheap is misleading. I will not make a gift out of poor quality (aka cheap fabric) that will fall apart quickly and not last laundering. However I will use quality fabric that is on sale or clearance, fabric from scrap sales, thrift stores, etc(aka cheap fabric). Big difference in quality vs price. Your quilt is lovely.
I know, right? Yesterday I went to a restaurant and they charged me for the food! It's crazy how people actually make money when they should do it for free!! And pay their bills out of good feelings and stuff!

Yes, I thought of that but because my triangles were horizontal that would be a lot more work.
I can't believe how many time saving tips in one video.
I use any fabric I can find. Cotton fabric in South Africa is very expensive. Love the challenge to create a quilt out of a variety of fabric.

Hello Anne🌹🌹
How are you doing! Hope fine?
Hi
Hello Anne-Marie, you should try Ankara fabrics. In Pretoria I buy 6 yards at R350. But, it needs to fit your style.

Thank you, good to know, I've never tried it.
I've bought and used temu fabrics and jelly rolls. They're great!
I bought a charm pack from Temu and it immediately went into the donation box. I swear I could almost read the newspaper through it.😢

Hey Sandy! How do you feel about prewashing your fabric before cutting?
Hi. Personally I don't do it, but it really is a matter of personal preference.
Rainbow wash is absolutely your signature!
Do you have a plan yet for the bits you trimmed off?
I love that, thank you. Not yet, but I'm sure I'll find a scrappy project to put them to good use. Any suggestions? 😊
Maybe add scrappy binding and do a garland or bunting of some type?
@KGlena-kx1df that's a great idea! Thank you 😊
Hi mija love watching your videos it helps me, I have trouble making quilts I make them with bandanas
Hi! Thank you. Bandana quilts must look awesome! 😁

Not sure yet, but I'll use them for something! 😁

I bought fabric in Germany, WAY BETTER QUALITY

Where I live I find so little organic fabrics, and most are solids, which is such a shame!
@seweasybysandy i buy most of mine online 😊
the biggest thing for cheaper cloth, is as its washed over and over, it literally dissolves....
I've never had that happen to me but I can totally imagine it with really low quality fabrics... These are more inexpensive than cheap, thank goodness 😄
Her fabric is usually so wild and often gaudy it could be prettier

You're right, inexpensive is more appropriate.

I don't like this way of making hst's as the edges are all bias.
