    One of the best things about your videos, is the arrow just prior to the strike. When I was just starting out with tenkara, this helped enormously with reading the water. This video also continues the debate about relevance of matched pattern vs presentation. If a fish thinks it's food, it will have at it.

    Wow, hard to believe there even trouts in those really shallow creeks. I would have never thought… Around my area, Southern Ontario, Canada, I think I would only hit creek chubs if I tried fishing in any creek or stream resembling the one you’re in… Good job. Thanks for showing that even in areas which don’t seem ideal to have trouts they nevertheless are there. I will pay more attention and try those sort of streams from now on.

    Crazy great location. Within a few seconds of the start of your fishing, I thought, "Wow, that looks like ________." After a few more seconds I realized that I knew exactly where that was! Cool! When I have fished it, the water was not nearly that low.

    Among the many strengths of your channel is the fact that you do sample such a neat variety of streams. All of them interesting, I would add. But this one seemed quite different. A wide, semi-braided stream bed like that suggests that drainage may have had some fairly heavy grazing in its past, and is still slowly recovering to a pool/riffle situation. Just a hunch. But a great video … and by the way I have an old Cortland fly reel that still sees some use each year. Purchased over 45 years ago.

I don't know if you saw it but when you caught the first fish on the fourth fly (9:57 on the timer) there was what looked like a fish that came in from the bank on the right side between the rocks. Looked like it might have been interested in the one you had on! Great videos to watch as I wait for May opening in WI

    In Connecticut, we have the brown trout, which was introduced into the streams in the 1800's, pushing out the native brook trout. Wish we could import some brookies from that stream since they are so abundant and pushing out the native cutthroat.

    Your comment about the brookies pushing out the native cutties is kind of funny, in a sad sort of way. Here in the East, the native brookies are being exptirpated by over development and continued expansion of wild browns introduced a long time ago.

    "I'm not going to pitch a trout on the bank to die".
    I'm with you there - that's just a waste, even if it ends up feeding the racoons, etc. In Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, there's a weird situation with the laws that seemingly force one to do just that. SNP is a brook trout fishery, but brown trout have made their way into the park; the rule is, brown trout cannot be returned to the stream. However, the park also follows the Virginia regulation on size, which I believe is 9 inches....so, if you catch an undersized brown trout, you can't release it, and you also can't legally keep it - on the bank it goes. What a waste - I know in such a situation, if I'm forced to NOT release fish, I'm not going to waste them, because I do eat fish. BTW - brookies are delicious.

    • @TenkaraAddict
      @TenkaraAddict  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's weird. Plus, on a creek like this, even if I removed all of the brook trout I caught, it wouldn't make a difference. Any space I made would just be taken up by the remaining brook trout and not the cutthroat. Even if every person who fishes this creek tossed out the brook trout, it still wouldn't get rid of all of them. It doesn't get fished enough for that to make a difference. The creek would need to be chemically treated and then re-planted with cutthroat for there to be any difference.

    • @ianjones6910
      @ianjones6910 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TenkaraAddict Yep, that's true - angler pressure doesn't make much of a dent on the population, unless it's just unlimited bait fishing with no one following the creel limits. I'm surprised you caught any cutts - from what I've seen out West, the brook trout so out-compete the cutts, they eventually drive them totally out..

      In the states I routinely fish (Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Montana), essentially never. I've only caught chubs in South Dakota, and I've never caught darters or dace. I have caught northern pikeminnows while fishing for trout in Idaho and Oregon.

    • @TheTCogo
      @TheTCogo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TenkaraAddict wow. That's so interesting. I'm in southern Ontario, Canada. Dry fly fishing I almost never have bycatch. But nymphing, I'll probably have 50/50 trout to bycatch. I know you're planning a trip up this way so at the very least you'll have a ton of new species haha. But the bycatch is quite worth it. Our rainbows and browns up here can get pretty big sucking down baitfish.

    Back when I first started fly fishing (late 60s) Cortland was a quality manufacturer. I don’t know if Walmart ruined them or if they just didn’t keep up with the Scientific Anglers, etc. but being a Walmart label is not a mark of distinction.

    In Sweden, Brook trout, is considered an invasive species. Millions are spent trying to get rid of them. Introduced here in the 1890's and again in the 1950's. Cool fish though and a survivor. Who decides what's invasive?

    I’m like you and am a catch and release fisherman. I’ve been thinking (probably a silly thing to do) about squirting a little “trout chow” in their stomach before I release them as I’ve read that catching a fish hampers their ability to eat for a short period of time. Couldn’t hurt I guess.
