yeah I caught my first brown on $40 BSA starter kit (Pflueger 5-6 really but for I'd call a solid 6 weight), mystery fly line (That broke before I caught the brown). The reel was plastic, which is fine except eventually the drag wore out (and lead to some very bad habits). It was a great rod for small streamers on a sink tip, but fell victim to improper storage. Putting decent fly line and a reel that didn't wear out from reeling the line in was all that was needed to use it regularly. The real issue I had with it was it was 3 section and annoying to transport/find a hard case for.
You can catch monstas on a zebco barbie rod. So I am sure a cheap combo fly set up would work. There is a much needed niche for less expensive beginner setups so you are not investing in a fishing technique you may not enjoy. That being said, when you start building your knowledge of fly fishing and techniques, whether nymphing, streamers or dry fly fishing the more expensive rods offer more sensitivity and feel becomes much more enjoyable to the user. Great content gentlemen
Honestly, the Walmart stores where I live don't sell anything to do with fly fishing, period. And I live around National Forest land that is packed with trout. Lol.
It's really about the knowledge and skill of the guy holding the rod. That being said the higher quality higher end products are far more enjoyable as you can feel so much more through rod and feel all the intricacies of the fight . It's like taking a river rod vs a ultralight
I once forgot my Fenwick Eagle on the way to my Dad’s place in Waynesville, NC. I was pissed as the Smokies are fly fishing central. He had a spare 6 wt Daiwa rod with a Martin reel. The fly line was double taper. Not my set up for sure, but I caught a lot of fish that summer. The Grey Ghost and I became friends. I took a really pretty 17” native brown on a stone fly imitation. I still have that rod and wouldn’t hesitate to use it.
I grew up poor as fuck. I had an Orvis reel from 20 years ago on an ugly stick and would massacre 3-4 pound rainbows. I use a field and stream pine creek now and primo flys. The rod doesn’t matter, even when it helps. I accidentally whip my new one from time to time because I’m not used to a good setup. Sometimes the cheap ass way is the best way.
My first fly rod and reel was pieced together from EBay and cost me $30. Fished it for a few years until Steve’s son shut the mini van door on it. I loved that thing and caught a ton of fish on it. I bring up that time to Steve all the time.
All I fish are wet flys and poppers on ponds and lakes. It is great fun. It is a cast and jig style more like spinner fishing but you are pulling line instead of reeling in.
@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing also having a diversified supply and turning over rocks in the shallow riffles is the easiest way to match the hatch. No hatch on, just use a worm (yarn) or leech (wooly bugger) both hold attractant well, if you're not a purist, and will produce; might not be a trout but you will not get skunked.
No reason why it wouldn't enable you to catch some trout proved you can cast, mend and present fairly decently. My first fly rod was a 9'6" Shakespeare 6/7-weight that was on sale for about $30 in 2009. Caught some nice fish on it. Still use it occasionally although the blank doesn't have great 'feel' so it's fairly useless for things like nymphing. Swinging wets, streamers and even occasionally dry fly fishing, all worked with it though. There is no reason really to spend hundreds on a first fly rod or even a backup. One thing I noticed though on moving here to the US from Britain was that fly fishing gear was very often in the 'exclusive' category price-wise compared to back home where much more budget-friendly options were more widely available. Not necessarily better of course but definiteley less spendy overall. Great little piece. Thanks.
Only used this once but it is as expected. When you buy an ugly stick you know what you are getting! String rod but also sensitive enough to feel the bite.
This actually helped a lot 😅 I just bought a rod ( of course a cheap one ) to see if I liked it which I do , but I can’t seem to really get my reach out on the water
Gotta love making a super emotional and cinematic video in slow mo of the cheapest fly rod purchase of your life. Congrats on the controlled experiment. Great to see you guys doubling as scientists and fisherman. Well done guys!
Well that's good to know lol just started fly fishing last year didn't want to start with 100 dollar or more set up so went with the rod combo you're using there. Even had a friend make some flies for me so must be my technic and not the rod. Really was helpful thank you

I just bought this because I’ve never fly fished in my life. I have been fishing regular tackle my entire life. So maybe I should have watched this video first

Epic!!!!! I am still laughing at "that thing is as thick as my thigh" LOL. The all new Walmart 20 wt fly combo. you guys should test it with a streamer.
Hey Terry. Steve likes the criticism and he can sort of take it. His persistence paid off with that rod. I wanted to move on to better flies and my rod after about 15 minutes of trying.
I’m coming for advice. I’ve struggled for months trying to find the fish on the Hooch. I mainly fish small creeks in the North GA and have decent success and have failed miserably on the Tailwater. Any advice on go to flies and parks? I’ve thrown everything from Wolly’s to Y2Ks and just can’t seem to find the fish. Thank you for everything you guys do. Videos help so much and are very entertaining
Hey Jason. Woolly Buggers and y2ks are generally good producers for me. Red copper johns have been a go to as of late and squirmies work too. Steve is a big fan of the tan mop and I have been using them lately as well and they seem to work. Pats rubber legs produce well in the colder months for me but they can work all year long. The closer you get to Buford dam, try zebra midges. Jones Bridge is good spot to wade.
Good Buddy Fly Fishing I will be giving it a try this weekend. Thank you so much for advice as always! Tight lines guys and thank you for the content! It’s the best
I've caught some of my best bass and trout on cheapo Wal*mart combo units. Of course, that was trolling, when your rod quality is at its least importance. I bought a Silver Stream fly rod tonight at WalMart because I saw a fly fisherman catch 4 trout right in front of my beach on the lake where I live. I have been trolling this lake for the last 2 weeks without catching anything. I haven't been fly fishing in 23 years. After 23 years, tomorrow morning I return to fly fishing with a Wal*Mart combo and Wal*Mart flies. Wish me luck. We need to break this awful streak ASAP. :P I was so angry at that fly fisherman. Right in front of my beach. What a jerk. It was like he was mocking me. We're gonna show him. I'll catch trout soon with my Wal*Mart rod and that will mock him with his fancy rod. Yeah, he caught trout while standing 5' from my property, but I'll catch trout with equipment that cost 1/5 the price of his. HERE WE GO YES IM DRUNK ITS BEEN A LONG TWO WEEKS actually its been three
That’s great. We love seeing people get into fly fishing. Glad we could point you towards something affordable that can catch fish. Good luck out there. This may be our first “drunk” comment. At least the first we know about. Thanks for watching.
@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing UPDATE: I caught 12 brookies and rainbows over the last 2 days ...on the Swedish Pimple and various spoons! I tried using the Wal*mart fly rod ... I was terrible at it. I don't know if it was me or the rod. (Maybe both?) ... but anyway, terrible streak has been smashed with the best trout fishing I've ever had. I still plan to get into fly fishing, but maybe I'll start with better gear. I think cheap gear may be best for people who are already good at it. I have a lot of practicing to do and can use the help of better gear.
We tried to use only the flies that came with the fly rod and we bought a few extra nymphs just in case. We tried swinging the wet flies and nymphs and tight lining. Steve was way more diligent in sticking to the plan so thanks to him it paid off.
Just goes to show that the amount of money you pay for the rod doesn't mean anything. It's the fly that the fish want not the rod. The question is, how do you feel about spending the hundreds or thousands of dollars you paid for that very expensive fly fishing rod? You can have just as much fun with a cheap rod. You can talk yourself in to any purchase you want to make. Oh yea, nice trout.
The most expensive rod I have ever bought was 300. I never use it. I caught a bunch of trout on my first fly rod that I bought for $25. You can get into fly fishing for a lot less that people think
You do not need expensive gear, but it sure is nice having it. I purchased a redington vice for 120 on sale and while it may seem steep it is a great investment.
@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing thanks man I appreciate the response. I haven’t been on the Chattahoochee much-mostly just little creeks. I enjoy the videos keep up the good work 🙏🏻
My first fly rod was about $30 too. I got it on eBay and caught a ton of fish with. But there is no doubt some high dollar rods do something’s better. Thanks for watching.
I bought my first fly rod about 6 yrs ago and it was $24.99 and it came with line, a leader and a couple flies from Academy. I bought some tippet and ordered a few more flies online and started catching bream out of the small city lake in my hometown. Now I’ve upgraded rod and reel I’m tying my own flies and caught 12 rainbows in southeast Oklahoma 2 days ago.
Honestly it’s not the equipment that is lacking it is you if you cannot get the piece of equipment to work the equipment is merely the instrument you yourself are the composer so if you do not compose really well you will not produce I’ve seen guys take $10 poles and catch millions of fish I’ve seen guys take $100 pools to $500 rig ups and catch no fish just saying I’m sure you probably know this and you’re only saying what you’re saying for the video but for those of you who don’t know this I am saying it
You guys spent nearly the whole video doggin out the rod and the flies because it was cheap, what if that’s all some guy can afford, but he’s not getting into fly fishing because he’s embarrassed of his equipment
Good point Eric. It's funny because I just filmed another video with this rod. In my honest opinion, a better fly rod makes a difference but made the statement if all you can afford is a $40 fly rod, don't let that stop you.
Fly fishing is more than nymphing. Casting accuracy and presentation are major factors in dry fly fishing. It is here that the difference in rods becomes noticeable. But this video was extremely entertaining.
Buddy really was telling steve to get his net out for a 12 in trout and that hes only on 6x… In the great lakes we catch 30in steelhead on fucking 6x tippet lol. And personally i dont use a net lmao
Well, no more fish than u guys catch I would say a Zebco 202 would work pretty well for u 2. LOL. Numbers aren't your thing I guess. At least u appear to have fun.
Never said if it had a leader attached to it or not, or what the weight of the flies you were going to fish. You guys should be thorough in a review of something like this for beginners so that they know what they are getting into.
This is just silly, if you know how to fly fish you should be able to catch with even the cheapest setups. It's not like the fish know how much you spent and it's a poor fisherman who blames his gear.
Yes. Very silly. It's just a video man. I didn't see a video on your channel showing how one can be a good fisherman with inexpensive gear. Let me know when you get one posted and I will gladly watch it. Looking forward to it.
@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing I didn't realize how thin-skinned you were. There are hundreds of videos demonstrating that fish can be caught on budget gear. I don't have a fishing channel, but I put together a compilation for you. Not one of the fish depicted was caught on a setup costing more than $100. th-cam.com/video/HF5hb_1uc_Y/w-d-xo.html
Will it catch trout? I put an el cheapo cabellas fly rod up to the test. Tied the fly on it, laying the rod on the bank to start with. Waited an hr, nothing. Then the idea hit me, so I laid it in the water, 2hrs go by and still nothing. Truth be know that use of the [stupid] term “will it catch fish” is no different than “do guns kill people”. Rods are tools, You’re responsible for catching your own fish.
Honestly, you can slay with cheap combos. I bought the $30 martin combo and have 10 steelhead this season (about 1 per 45minutes to hour of fishing).

Ive caught one 19 pound chinook on the martin, it was a very long fight but it held up

It helps when you catch fish bigger than we do. Ultimately, you want to reel in the excess line when you have a fish on and let the drag do some work.

A good fly on a cheap rod in the hands of a good fisherman will catch more fish than a bad fly on an expensive rod in the hands of a bad fisherman.
Lol you guys are a hoot
Thanks for watching brother. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing absolutely! I can’t wait to get started on the fly
I’m acc suprised you only have 3.5k subscribers
Thanks for watching. There are a lot of factors at play and we know consistent uploads is one of them. We are trying.
I hope you don’t mind me asking but Where did y’all film this?
We filmed that at Jones Bridge on the Chattahoochee
@@GoodBuddyFlyFishing thanks man I appreciate the response. I haven’t been on the Chattahoochee much-mostly just little creeks. I enjoy the videos keep up the good work 🙏🏻
My big box stores have ZERO fly fishing items... and almost nothing for fishing. Kind of sad.
Fortunately, you can get some pretty inexpensive stuff on Amazon. Thanks for coming along with us.
I've caught plenty of wild browns on Cortland bead head nymphs. Lmao
Nice work. I just don’t have enough patience to try new flies. Probably not a good thing.
A fly rod is a fly rod you just gotta know how to fish
I agree. My kids would rather make their own fishing rod with a stick. You don't even need to know how to fish. Just get out there.
My fly rod was like $30 and I’ve caught lots of fish but I don’t like it at all
My first fly rod was about $30 too.
You could've proved that with a cane pole and had even more fun for less money hint, hint
True. Sounds like tenkara fishing to me.
I got the same rod to start out with today then I’ll get a better one
Nice. Let me know how it goes.
Wlso hi again I really like it and I’m getting a better one
Hilarious. Showing to my wife to justify a Sage X because more money = more fish right?
You nailed it. You have no choice but to get the sage. If she is like most wives of fisherman she will totally get it.
At 2:38 is that a reference from the movie elf? Lol
Lol that’s funny
Thanks for watching Brandon. Glad you enjoyed it.
Honestly it’s not the equipment that is lacking it is you if you cannot get the piece of equipment to work the equipment is merely the instrument you yourself are the composer so if you do not compose really well you will not produce I’ve seen guys take $10 poles and catch millions of fish I’ve seen guys take $100 pools to $500 rig ups and catch no fish just saying I’m sure you probably know this and you’re only saying what you’re saying for the video but for those of you who don’t know this I am saying it
That is true. There are things that help with "better" equipment but you are right. I plan on trying the walmart rod again and not giving up so easy.
Just goes to show you… ALL fishing gear is designed to catch more people than fish.. you really don’t need top of the line gear.
Why wouldn’t a 50 dollar fly rod catch fish? Like the fish know you spent more money
We love our 12” trout down here man. When you aren’t that good it’s better to use the net. But you do you.
Well, no more fish than u guys catch I would say a Zebco 202 would work pretty well for u 2. LOL. Numbers aren't your thing I guess. At least u appear to have fun.
I think we could of done better trying some different flies and an indicator but we definitely had some fun.
You guys know a trout shouldn't be outta the water more than 5-10 seconds max for C and R
True. We definitely need to be more intentional about that.
UTUBE HAS MANY AHOLES AND WHAT THE F"S ❓❓..THESE 2 GUYS ARE A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THEM.
Thanks for watching.
Never said if it had a leader attached to it or not, or what the weight of the flies you were going to fish. You guys should be thorough in a review of something like this for beginners so that they know what they are getting into.
Sorry man. We will try to be a little more thorough next time around.
That fish doesn't know what brand rod you're holding....
They could care less.
Goes to show the fish don’t care about the brand
They don’t care about the brand one bit. I like gear but a fish in the net is a fish in the net, doesn’t matter what you use to get it there.
Definitely proved there’s a lot of money wasted on overpriced fishing gear. “Keep the fly fishing” - that’s what it’s all about.
It can definitely be done on a budget. Thanks for watching Stephen.
Good point.
