Thank you for the great video- just reviving an 89 GL1500 k barn queen (22k original) as a retired(x3) Diesel tech. I've restored a # of Euro bikes- first Asian ride

Thanks for watching Dean. Goldwing is not all that Asian as most Asian people are not big enough to safely ride one and the Goldwings are made to suite Americans and European type of people and were made here in Ohio for a number of years before moving the factories back to Japan and when they were moving back over there they did not build any for a year or so. I forgot what year that was but I'm sure it's easy to find out online.
I'm also a deisel tech of sorts, really just an owner operator that was an auto mechanic back in the '80s

Great video, you sure went through a lot of trouble to video it. Thank you so much I really appreciate you taking the time to video everything, it means a lot when you have to remove the carbs. I hope I don't have to remove mine, but for some reason mine wants to idle from five hundred rpm to twenty five rpm.I hadn't figured out what is cussing it. It just reves from one to another, you try to idle it down it goes dead. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Holy cow what a plumbing nightmare, at least you have the video as a reference when you reassemble.

Appreciate the time you took to make the videos. It has convinced me I am certainly not going to try it myself :-)

Nice job Gordon. It was nice of Honda to put the carbs right on top for easy servicing.

They're on top so to speak but not so easy to service in my opinion.

other than being able to see it done, theres a lot of bad or incorrect info here. Join a gold wing forum and get the right info guys. It is good to get a visual guide of it all being taken apart so you know what your going to find. BTW......air shot supply line is not a pvc valve

as a good tip, when you have to get down and look inside to find and loosen the boot(s) clamps with the long phillips screw driver, you may find this tip useful.before you put it back together, when the clamps are totally off, spray paint then a bright color,white,yellow..etc.. i used orange.when i got down and looked inside with my flash light they were easily seen.also get a head light that you wear to see where you are looking.it helped a bunch...the brighter the better.good video..thanks..

I have had a number of Goldwings from 1980s and thought I wanted a 1500 until I saw this video and all the layers of plastic bullshit that had been tacked onto this bike. Im good now and gonna go look for an old Kawasaki.

@00:47 That is the heated air intake for when the outside air cold, like the old carb'd cars.

Great video, Gordon. Would love to see a video from you on changing the thermostat. I can't for the life of me see how to get to the rear bolt by going through the front with the radiators removed. Is it easier to get to the thermostat by removing the carbs? I was hoping to see a view straight-down in once you took off the carbs. From what I read on the forums, replacing a thermostat on a GL1500 is one of the hardest jobs there is. Thank you!

I can't do a video on that until I need to do that job. Thanks for commenting.

It was way easier to remove the 2 screws holding down the throttle control cables than to remove them both from the holder. Same thing goes with the cruise control cable set.on the opposite side.

What is the (semi)clear tubing that we see partially kinked near the beginning? You noticed that it was kinked, and mentioned that you might invert it in its position during the re-installation. I'm just curious as to the function of it, and whether it was any part of the difficulty you were having re: not being able to fully open the choke for a long time after you had been riding. Yeah, kind of a nightmare getting down in there to the star of the show, and I'm sure it will be lots of fun putting it all back together when the show is over, too. Patience is definitely one of the tools needed for jobs like this :)

That hose you referred to is a drain hose for over filling the gas tank. On the part 3 video I found why I needed more choke after cleaning the carbs. The idle jets are why I needed more choke before the cleaning. Thanks Charles.

Gordon, I work in Peru, IL. I have an Series 60 I am preparing to overhaul in Mattoon. I have recently watched many of your videos, especially any of the Freightliner related ones. You would save me a lot of time if there was some way I can duplicate your sleeve puller. Can I share my phone number or email? It would be an honor to meet you, I have many of the same hobbies and interest. I also have a 74 Goldwing 1000 with an opposing engine I need to pull the carbs on. I will watch this video a little closer and see if it applies to that project. Thanks for sharing!

@Joseph Ostiguy, Randakks cycle Shackk is your best resource for first gen Goldwing info. There are no similarities between gen1 & gen3 other than the name!

You can email me at gordonrdiy@yahoo.com and can discuss options there. The gl1000 is totally different but much easier to r&r the carbs. Motorcycle carb cleaning is about the same on all of them once you get them off. There's a lot of YT videos on carb cleaning, I don't have any for bikes yet, this will be my first. the cleaning procedure is the same but totally different to take them off and back on. I thought the measurements for the liner puller were in the video, I'll watch it again, I can measure the pieces and make a list I guess.
