Ford Puma - Should You Buy One?

  • BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A FORD PUMA FROM OSV: bit.ly/2Xnea1J
The Ford Puma looks an interesting package for buyers in the small SUV segment searching for something a little more fun. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
    Market and Model
Puma pricing reflects current figures at the upper end of the small SUV segment - which Ford feels justified in asking given this car's relatively sophisticated mild hybrid tech. To be specific, that means a starting point of around £21,000, with figures rising to around £27,500 at the top of the range. Trim levels are based around familiar 'Titanium' and 'ST-Line' badging. Standard equipment includes heated and massaging seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control and a rear-view camera. The Puma is also the first vehicle in its segment to offer hands-free tailgate and Lumbar Massage Seat comfort and convenience technologies.
Advanced driver assistance technologies include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Speed Sign Recognition and Lane Centring, for easier negotiation of highway and stop-start traffic. There's also a 'New Local Hazard Information' feature, which can inform the driver of hazardous situations in the road ahead before they become visible to the driver or vehicle sensors. And helping Puma drivers reverse with greater confidence, Ford's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert can provide a warning when reversing of vehicles that may soon be crossing behind them. The system can apply the brakes to avoid or mitigate the effects of collisions if drivers do not respond to warnings.
    Cost of Ownership
Being based on Fiesta engineering promises decent efficiency, as does Ford's latest EcoBoost Hybrid technology and that's how it turns out. The extra electrification apparently improves combined cycle WLTP-rated economy by around 9% over what you'd get from an ordinary 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. For the 125PS variant, Ford is talking about CO2 emission readings from 124g/km (NEDC) and a combined cycle WLTP fuel return of 52.3mpg. For the top 155PS derivative, the figures are 127g/km and 50.4mpg. Obviously, the 1.5-litre diesel will be more frugal still - and is expected to return 123g/km of CO2.
This is all aided by what the brand calls 'Torque substitution', which deploys the electric motor functionality of the hybrid system's 'BISG' 'Belt-driven Integrated Starter/Generator' to provide up to 50Nm of torque - reducing the amount of work required from the petrol engine. The 'BISG' is also able to aid the powerplant's stop/start system in urban traffic, restarting the engine in approximately 300 milliseconds - about the same as the blink of an eye. And the 'BISG' also enables the Puma EcoBoost Hybrid's Auto Start-Stop technology to operate in a wider range of scenarios for even greater fuel savings, including when coasting to a stop below 10mph, and even when the vehicle is in gear with the clutch pedal depressed.
    Summary
Having moved its third generation Kuga SUV a little up-market, Ford needed a car to plug the gap down to its entry-level EcoSport Crossover model and this Puma fills that role very well. It delivers the fashionable looks, trendy media connectivity and efficient engine tech that buyers in the small SUV segment tend to look for and delivers it all in a package that the brand reckons sets fresh standards for the kind of driving enjoyment a little car of this kind can serve up.
Which puts Ford back in the hunt in this growing market segment. It was becoming increasingly difficult to recommend the EcoSport to a customer in this segment already charmed by the Juke and Captur market leaders. This Puma though, is good enough to give those segment stalwarts a great deal to think about. As enthusiasts, we still can't help wishing it was a small coupe. But as pragmatists, we reckon Ford has probably hit its intended target here.

I’ve had a Puma Titanium 1st Edition for 6 months. 125 hp. I’ve put 3000 miles onto it including a good swing around the North Coast 500. My previous car was a BMW 3 series 3 litre xDrive Estate.
For the money this car is totally amazing. Comfortable and very well kitted out ; indeed it lacks for nothing. The boot plus mega box is more than ample and with the seats down it accommodates pretty much everything you need to go the dump. Rear legroom Isn’t the best but it’s adequate for pottering around town. But for two persons it’s perfect. The seats are very good, heated with a massage function. The media system is very good and better than my 2015 BMW. I really struggle to find fault with it but maybe there’s a bit too much hard plastic about and with city driving I’m maybe getting 35 mpg ( on the 500 we averaged high 40s easily).
This is my first ever Ford and it’s been a revelation.

@@alistairvenning7329 Have a look at the engine Torque figures, the 155 bhp has a torque from memory of 240 nm but I'm assuming this includes the electric motor kicking in, both the 125 & 155 have a bigger turbo than the non mild hybrid engine which has a torque of 170 nm, so if you deplete your battery the torque figures drop, and to what level I don't know but I assume not less than 170 nm.

@@ivancosmin6556 yeah and i stil think it's the best car to drive for this price in this segment, nimble, direct, not the most comfortable car but comfortable enough but more sportive and direct car to drive and it's not to large so it's stil pretty easy to park. I tried out both the ST and the Titanium but i feel the ST is a bit to stiff. The booth is great thx to that mega box and it's easy to clean. We're making about 6,2l/100km after 8 months. My fiesta does 5.9l/100km after 5 years. So it's not bad. The interior is nice and everything works pretty well. The B&O system sounds nice too, the connection to phone works fine. And ofcourse roadtax is low for a car like this thx to the small engine so all and all a very nice and smart car to buy. Any more questions, just ask 😁

They are all pointless fashion crap as well. Whats the obsession with a car thats raised up, doesn't have AWD and has no more practicality than a normal hatchback ? I love all the reasons people (mainly women) get these sort of cars, and its all bollocks. Oo look I can see the road better with the high up driving position. Look love, I could see the road perfectly well in my Audi TT. Oo I can fit lots in the back. You can fit about the same amount of stuff in a Focus. Oo it will cope better in bad weather. Why ? Its not AWD and since when do you need a raised ride height on the roads ? Youre not climbing over rocks !

marklola12 yes its weird how we waited for years for Fords to update the interiors, and now they already look dated. A sea of grey bland plastics with that awful oversized tablet stuck on the dashboard. The Focus ST in orange looks fantastic, but the interior is just the standard Focus interior, nothing special. You think Ford would have put fancy trim in it.

it's not a fantastic car, i don't know the price in the united kingdom, but here in portugal, the st-line version costs almost the same as a focus active, which is a much better car.

Im not a fan of these jacked up, not a hatchback, not an estate car, whats a crossover when its at home ? Its NOT got AWD, its NOT designed to go off road so it doesn't crossover into anything. Its a raised up hatchback, has no more practicality than a Focus. Style over substance. Oh hang on, he says its in the fashionable SUV segment. That says it all really. Get a Focus, you dont need this joke of a car. Sorry, this is a great channel and review, its the car im moaning about not your video.

Yes and this Puma won't tow a two berth caravan. All pretty pointless for a SUV which is supposed to be versatile.

I find the current Focus too bloated for UK roads and parking. The Fiesta maybe a touch too small, so the Puma does have a certain Goldilocks size about it in European markets.

Meni Fo it looks shit. It is a pointless fashion car that will be traded in for some other pointless fashion car in 3 or 4 years, thus wasting more money. Get a new Subaru, pay it off keep it for ten years at least, and it will also run rings round this silly car.
