In Canada, the Douglas C-54 was re-engine with the Roll-Royce Merlins and called the North Star. They were used by the forerunner of Air Canada called TransCanada Airlines and it was the first aircraft I flew on in 1952 at 3 months of age from Saint John, New Brunswick to Boston, MA., when the engines started IU fell asleep and when they shutdown in Boston, I woke up. I later joined the RCAF as an Aero Engine Tech.
About the smoke, when a radial engine sits, oil will seep past the piston rings into the combustion chambers of the lower cylinders. When they start up it burns that oil off and they'll smoke for a while. A couple of the clips showed them turning over the prop for several revolutions before switching on the ignition. That's to clear that oil out of the combustion chambers and avoid hydro-locking the cylinder and bending the connecting rod. That oil goes out the exhaust port and when it warms up, it smokes. It's normal and unavoidable in a radial engine.
@FR Trump isn't the problem. Industry is. Besides, if environmentalists would allow the clean energy of nuclear power, we would have a far smaller issue with coal and oil. Nuclear technology is enormously better than in the 80s and 90s, but the environmentalists only talk about nuclear energy problems of decades ago, not to the advances of today.
My dad flew a DC-3 for many years, for Mead Corporation. I always loved the sound of those r1850 twin wasp engines firing up!
Thumbs up! Nothing like going to the air show and watching WWII era prop engines firing up! Smoke, belching, noise, love it!
Do you like these OLD AIRCRAFT ENGINES ?

Im right at home in the C7... And working on the R 20007M2... Fav past time
good videos
I prefer museum planes to be ran or flown not collecting dust.

The hydro lock cracks the head spark plug to sparkplug
Love is a round engine
Wow like starting a Harley but better
Starting an engine like the 28 cylinder engine without a prop on it to keep it cool is a crime
Am I right in thinking that the ones that crank for a while before firing are pre-oiling and working up some oil pressure?
very nice!
What’s a Cold Straing up??
Good
Needs more details on some vids
Компактні потужні двигуни,
That’ll run the flys in the hot summer off any one
It’s a typo most likely starting up.
Why such a small prop for the old bird ?

О наш кукурузяник.
That first one - I'd like to see what happens if they take the brakes off the truck!
The demo engines are 49 state compliant. California wouldn't allow starting them. Lol.

joe woodchuck what do you do with the waste? It is a huge issue.
@@frankbutaric3565 What waste? If you're talking about exhaust, the engine would only run a short time since it's just for demo purposes.
