Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) is a firefighting foam used to put out fires and also contains harmful PFAS chemicals. It is specifically designed for combating Class B fires, which involve flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, and jet fuel. AFFF is highly effective because it spreads quickly over the surface of burning liquids, forming a thin aqueous film that smothers the fire, cuts off oxygen, and prevents re-ignition. The effectiveness of AFFF is largely due to the inclusion of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), a group of man-made chemicals known for their water- and oil-repellent properties. PFAS chemicals act as surfactants in the foam, reducing surface tension and allowing it to spread rapidly across flammable liquids. This makes AFFF highly effective, but it also comes with significant health and environmental risks. PFAS chemicals, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” are highly persistent in the environment and do not break down easily. When AFFF is used, the PFAS within it can seep into soil and water systems, contaminating drinking water and natural ecosystems. This contamination can lead to long-term health risks, including cancer, immune system suppression, liver damage, and developmental issues. Due to these risks, there has been a push to phase out PFAS-containing foams like AFFF and replace them with fluorine-free alternatives (FFF) that are safer for both people and the environment. However, the legacy contamination from AFFF use remains a major environmental challenge.

My opinion is that people in less developed countries don't consider safety their top priority, and as a result, they put themselves and the machines in danger.
@@HeavyMiningEquipment You make an interesting point about safety priorities in different parts of the world. But I wonder if it’s not just about the country or level of development-it could also be about the industry culture itself. Even in more developed countries, we've seen reckless behavior around machinery in the name of speed or cutting corners.
