  • It was the car that Steve McQueen loved most, but after its sale in 2007 the 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso all but vanished, leaving Nick Rufford, editor of Driving, to dream of finding it. Then his phone rang... would he like to drive it?

    Phenomenally wrong decision to put this car in the hail 😱😱😱

    WTF?? I wouldn't have that car out in the rain, and these idiots have it sitting out in the hail? Damn.

      +tscooter22 Man I second that. Whoever owns that car is an idiot for giving it to this idiot in this weather. Not only is a special rare Ferrari is doubly special since the king of cool owned it. Jesus, that is crazy.

      @@vangledosh No, your Corolla is a machine. This is art (judge in Italy ruled 250 GTO as art) and owned by the greatest classic film driver in history.

    So he spent years dreaming of finding this car (according to the description), but he can't wait a few minutes for the weather to clear before having the car sit in a hail storm. I love the comment "trying to make sure that it doesn't get too wet or TOO BADLY DAMAGED" as his voice competes with the sound of hail stones streaming down.

    Complete and utter disrespect of this classic.

    Ferrari’s most beautiful car ever, in my opinion. What a lot of people don’t know is that Ferrari built 4 racing cars on the basis of the Lusso but with a longer wheelbase, 4 liter displacement and front panel from the 250 GTO. This was the 330 LMB (Le Mans Berlinetta).

    I worked at a car dealership and as we got warning of Hail in the area we put the most expensive cars under cover immediately, to include driving them into the shop.

    • @theoriginalbillholt

      Mange merde to you and Plume D'Argent. My Grandfather bought a used, metallic deep-green1976 Vega for my Mom. I seem to recall it having something like 796 miles on it when acquired. I liked that car. No mechanical gem, but I still miss it. I'd drive it to school on occasion, and later on my Mom let me take it a couple of times for week-long trips off to Koledge. ; ]
      My grandfather also owned a '72 Pinto. I liked the Pinto, but THAT car you could put this turd in amidst inattentive cell phone-attached drivers and I'd not care at all. Fuck you for maligning the Vega. Mine was known as Darth Vega, and may the force be with you for protection against its wrath. Ha!
      To the dicks who are busting on the whiners about overprotecting this Ferrari, fuck you, too. It's a classic, and Steve McQueen was privileged to have all of his toys. This twat even states that the car was orphaned by McQ when he changed his allegiance to Porsche. My gripe is that these douchebags must have had no way of paying extra to reschedule a shoot on a day that the sun was beaming. Yeah, it's still 'just a car', but I'd be pissed to have some moron subject it to hail damage that would forever taint its pristine and presumedly unrestored vintage condition, and that concern has nothing to do with the car's market value.
      Before seeing all of these similar comments about pampering this car, I was going to leave a sarcastic remark about wondering if it ever made it out of first gear for this video. I'll have to give this guy credit for not topping out on wet pavement. That almost makes up for the idiocy of the statement "We want to make sure it doesn't get too wet or too badly damaged." Pure grace under pressure with that brilliant utterance.
      I'd dig having that car. It's a year older than I am, and we both look fantastic. Ha! I'm an environmentally responsible consumer, but I'd drive this stallion every day, beyond first gear, from late Spring until the first snow of Winter. I wouldn't take it out with the threat of a hail storm, however. ; ]

    Starts out in the hail and no engine sounds, if youre going to risk covering it with dents for the sake of sticking to your damned shooting schedule the least you could have done is lay into the throttle once or twice!

  • @manofweed1
    @manofweed1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What shit people talk. Did McQueen drive in the hail ? Bet he drove whilst pissed (drunk) as well. Was it less of a car when it was worth say $10,000 ? No, it was the self same car, and a bit of rain won't do fuck all to it.

    Couldn’t just film the intro in a sheltered garage or warehouse or something huh... I know, lets have a super rare, super valuable car out in the elements. Lets have this classic sat out IN HAIL for the intro... ugh...

    knowing the car from many historical photos, it just makes me angry seeing the first part of this video. these people have no absolutely no respect to a great piece of work where people many years ago were giving all their heart into building it and a lot of people for many many years respected and cared for this car to keep it in that good shape... its just really sad.

    can you imagine having the unbelievable opportunity to drive this beautiful car that had been once been a favorite of the legendary Steve McQueen. And instead if letting us hear the wonderful exhaust note as he drove away...just play some lame music to cover the sound .
    that is ridiculously annoying?

    too wet! or TOO badly damaged!! as opposed to mildly damaged! get that car out of the hail stones for gods sake! its a car that has lived in california and never see rain, driving it in the pissy rain is going to get all the components, brakes suspension etc filthy dirty...no..no ..no..please stop and get it under cover!!

    • @knutn
      @knutn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For fuck sake, it's a car, it's meant to be used, and it can handle a wee bit of wet.

    • @christoph404
      @christoph404 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      wrong....its a multi million dollar investment that should be kept out of hail stones and wet weather, people who own these cars do not drive them in all weather, they are carefully driven out for display and special occasions, blue chip cars are not "meant to be used" as you put it, they are far too valuable, thats the reality of this level of car ownership.

      chris mac hail in the UK is not like the stuff you get in the USA - it is puny and does not damage anything

    • @christoph404
      @christoph404 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hahaha, try telling that to the people living in the north east of England who's cars were badly damaged by hail, last summer 2015, yes summer, not winter, a hail storm during the night wrote off about 1700 cars, the hail was the size of golf balls, you can google it if you don't believe it.

    • @bosede-nage8467
      @bosede-nage8467 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      chris mac I recall the story about that storm, it was hardly typical! That's why it made the news. I don't believe I had ever heard of that kind of hail in the UK before

    Sunday Times Driving has the worst production value of anything on the internet. These are truly terribly produced videos!

    • @theoriginalbillholt
      @theoriginalbillholt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kuro Temprano -- I've seen worse 'quality', yet there's little 'quantity' to this video. The McQueen ownership matter was given sufficient attention without being overdone, but I thought I'd seen a comment stating that it would be good and rather expected to have some demonstration and talk of performance and handling. In all fairness, perhaps that was undone by the weather, or forgone at the insistance of the owner. This may have been a 'one shot' opportunity, for reasons unknown. I like the introductory and ending credit shot, but beyond that this seemed to be a project in search of a more accomodative budget.
