  • True confessions, I fibbed to you all but I will explain!
    I am filling the Burpee seed starting kit with beautiful Gomphrena, and I am sowing some California Native Milkweed. Plus I will be starting a tray of microgreens (my first time for this!)
    Hi, I am Pamela and I garden in the mountains of Northern California. I am in Zone 8. I defy convention and break many garden 'rules' yet my garden is a tapestry of color and unruly beauty! I want you to be inspired to create a beautiful garden.

    Your greenhouse is so inviting and I love your tips. I am a new gardener but have had a lot of success with the burpee 72 count self watering trays. Here's what I have found that works in my own self seeding journey1) You need to place the pellets upright before pouring the water over them. 2) Use a bamboo stick to soften the pellets up as you water them in . Use "luke warm water" It does take longer than you think. It's not like putting our own potting soil over trays. These need time to grow on their own. 3) Place the mat on the black side up for the water to wick. I know typical seed starting mix is not full of nutrients, but it's fluffy enough to help the babes grow. I learned from you in your video that this is actually coconut coir and/or peat moss - I would love to learn more about this. Thank you for your insightful and warm and fun videos! You are wonderful Pamela!

      Thanks for the insight. I think I put my wicking mat on upside down but it seems to be wicking anyways. I will check on that for sure. Yes, it was a hard lesson to learn to make sure the pellets are upright. Warm water does help the process go faster as far as water absorbing.

    Very interesting how toxic lilies are to animals. I had many toxic plants and one deadly plant to dogs and I did cleaned out my garden and now I focus on keeping a safe garden for my dog. She does like to get into plants and dig 😂 Your paintings are stunning! I can’t see that you are struggling, you are doing very good! 😊

    Hi Pamela, I enjoy watching your videos inside your greenhouse, looks cozy. I've joined the seed starting clan the past 2 years after watching so many on TH-cam have such great success. Plus lets face it - the cost of a 6 pk, 4", quart and gallon size container keeps going up every yr.!! I appreciate how you keep it real and low key Thanks for the heads up about the ants on the milkweed and one question, how long do you microwave your soil to eliminate fungus knats? Last but not least, your paintings were both really GOOD!

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh thank you. I microwaved the soil for about 2 minutes but you can do a bit longer for extra measure. Mine is a 1700 watt one so if yours is lower you may need to micro longer. You can also pasteurize in the oven or pour the boiling water through it like I did in another video.

    Hi, you put your wicking mat on wrong side up, you have to pre-moisten the wicking mat and place it black side up in contact with your seed trays.

      You caught that, did you?. Yes, I often don't follow the rules but I do have a lot of success but I also learn from my mistakes. Mostly I realize I need to slow down and find out all the facts before proceeding, like with the grow tray, it seems I put the watering mat in upside down!

      @@FlowerPatchFarmhouse thats the case with most flowers whether you leave them on the plant or bringing them in as cut flowers. Generally, I prefer them outside to bring colour to the garden but if the show is so profuse like with some Roses, Zinnias, Dahlias, Calla Lilies, Gladiolus....I gotta bring some in to enjoy inside, too.

    Hey Pat. I thought the issue with Peat moss is that there is a limited amount of it in the world and it is considered non-renewable because it takes years to regrow. Peat bogs absorb more carbon than they release and they regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Apparently we are inching closer to running out of this valuable resource for the planet. Also when we mine the bogs, we release its carbon back into the atmosphere. We should all stay away from products that contain peat moss for this reason. What do you think?

    • @corinne7126
      @corinne7126 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      agree, I thought the same thing

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is conflicting information about it and yes in Europe and the UK it is dwindling but in Canada they have barely touched it and that is where the peat moss in our products come from. It is hard to separate fact from fiction in the media world as they promote a cause they jump on and spew out information that may not actually be factual.
      Did you know the common moss that grows on our sidewalks, soil, rock and concrete walls can actually sequestors 100s of times more carbon than peat moss? But no one has protested when it gets cleaned off, nor has media picked up on it and encouraged everyone to leave it be. It is an interesting conundrum as we can be swayed by information that is not complete or accurate but is based on who is trying to sway us. I am neutral on it. I try to resort to local items that I can source not far from my home so it reduces the shipping and the foot print that way.

    I now have the Rev growth stimulator that you also use I think. They recommend to soak the seeds or water the soil with the solution. Have you ever tried that?

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I have and I do sometimes. But I water the soil with it after I bring it into the house and put on the rack. I should include that. I don't soak the seeds often as I find them a bit more fiddily to sow right away, I could drain them and let them dry then sow them but that takes forethought and I am usually rushing out to sow seeds when I find the time during my day. My life is rather chaotic.

    Asiatic lilies (Lilium) and calla lilies (Zantedeschia) are not related. The pollen of calla lilies does not pose a threat to cats.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, I had not taken the time to look it up yet. Plus the pollen is so deep in the petals of the calla lilies it does not seem like cats could brush against it inadvertantly either.

    I’m trying Gomphrena for the first time this year.
    I tried coir couple years ago not knowing what I was working with and found it needs a ton of perlite as it holds water big time. It molded. Then I learned of the salts that can be in it. It is a nice texture and will need to weigh out the price compared to peat. But I will more than likely stay with Spaghnum Peat Moss. Reason why is explained next.
    -I read an article on Grower Talks (1/1/2022) and they interviewed Premier who is a major supplier of peat moss in Canada. It thoroughly explains it is a sustainable product as long as it’s managed well. Over 80% of peat bogs are still virgin bogs.
    I think the main misconception happens when people hear/read on social media that the UK is stopping the sales of peat-they need to know Why! Many in the past in the UK used peat blocks to heat their homes-at current Ireland and Finland still do. It’s also a great release of carbon used this way where Premier states theirs goes back to growing plants that recaptures carbon in gardeners yards. They don’t have the landmass in the UK for sustainability like CN. I was really happy to have found this article as it explains a lot 🎉🎉. So don’t feel bad about using peat and it does appear to be sustainable If managed properly.
    They have over 281 million acres of peat bogs in CN and in the last 90 years they have used about 60K acres. The article states it is less than 1%. Not a problem from what I read from the main harvester of peat-Premier.
    Like you say, as far as a carbon footprint the washing and shipping of coir is a dirty underlying thought that is not talked about very much.
    Love that you bought more seed! The laugh made my day!😂

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, if it hasn't been flushed well it can contain salts which is death to your plants. Yes, I have read several articles on the peat moss controversy and it can fall either way. It is the same about cows and the methane they supposedly exude causing pollution and come to find out, it dissipates so quickly in the atmosphere that is really has no bearing plus the good they do to mitigate fires in grazing land is a huge. The fires cause 100s of times more pollution than the poor cows ever could but the media broadcast headlines and people buy it hook line and sinker.

      @dustyflats3832 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FlowerPatchFarmhouse yes, and what I really liked about this article is this info is from the harvesters of peat-Premier in CN.
