Thank you for showing the delphiniums from New Zealand, I've been thinking about ordering from them for a couple of years, but have never heard anyone talk about them. Finally ordered them today thanks to you! Excited to give them a try.
Great, I will update in my next video that the don't necessarily need the cold spell and I am bringing mine in today instead of waiting the week. I was reading the website for the New Zealand Delphs and they say nothing on cold stratification so maybe this variety doesn't need it.
Delphiniums are so beautiful. Thank you very much for sharing. Just found your channel and subscribed to it. Looking forward to see more of your videos. Greetings Heidi 👩🌾🌸
The boiling water method works.. I have that same kettle... I had a gnat infestation during covid 19 with seed starting mix. Next season I looked into it and they mentioned baking it in oven😳 .. that just wasn't for me. Boiling was the second suggestion and I do it regardless. I have a 2 gallon pot with a lid. I let it cool down with it on ... just incase something tries to escape😅 Happy gardening.
You are so welcome! I went back and looked at their instructions and they don't have you cold stratify so I am going to bring in my tray and put it on my light rack today. So I will address that in my next video. Just so you know. I hope they grow as well for you as they have for me. I would have huge stands of them all around my garden if the gophers hadn't eaten them. This batch will be planted in cages or raised beds with protective wire under them.
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse I'm in and suburban area of Canada and we don't have gophers that I know of. We do have voles that dig holes in my lawn and skunks. I'm glad you are taking precautions to protect your plantings. Yeah for no cold stratifying because it has been record breaking warm here and no snow! Can't wait for the next video.
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Pam my seeds arrived today, I am going to start some in the coffee filters and some I will direct sow in my garden and I will definitely keep you updated. I've watched your videos a few times and took notes! You should really write a gardening book you are so knowledgeable and make gardening fun!
Thanks for the video and link, just ordered my delphiniums! I had the same issue with the phlox so now I always presprout my phlox just like the delphinium. 😊. Moist paper towel, place in a sealed baggy in the dark. Germination. Normally 7 days. Works great!
Thanks for the tip! I don't know why I didn't think of that. What a duh moment for me. I will do that today and see how it goes. I went in and ordered more delph seeds too, I couldn't resist some more. I want to try the bright pink ones!
Good morning Pamela! 😊 thank you for this video! I have yet to be successful with starting delphiniums 😮 I try every year thinking 💭 okay this will be the year 😂 nope I'm going to try the coffee filter trick! Have you tried the coffee filter idea for poppy seeds? That's another one I've struggled with... have a great day!
No I haven't. But I have had such great success in direct sowing in mid-winter with the poppies I hadn't thought to try them. I have some of my Laurens Grape I collected last year, I should try it.
I pop my sowing compost in the microwave to kell anything that could harm my plants. No mess very easy. Thank you for showing us how to sow Delphinium. they are one of my favourite flowers but i always get poor germination. Just 4 seeds germinated out of 20 sown. Fingers crossed i can manage to gro more this year
Have you tried the coffee filter trick yet? Maybe that will help with germination. One commenter said hers took 3 weeks so they can take their sweet time in germinating! Yes, I have done the compost in the micro too and need to do some today, thanks for the reminder!
Hello, I got successful germination of delphinium (and lavender) in a jiffy starter kit using pellets. They are under grow light. When should I remove the humidity dome: when most sprouted or are at least a certain height? Thanks
Once you have germination I would remove it. And place a fan near on low to gently blow across them, this will help deter wilt which is caused by a fungus that they are very susceptible to. I use this fan: www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-Gardens-New-8-inch-Retro-3-Speed-Metal-Tilted-Head-Oscillation-Table-Fan-Mint/647657051 I have it in mint and pink, I like the look of it and I can set it on low with it oscillating near my seedlings for that air circulation.
It will be interesting to know what type of sowing works the best for the delphiniums. I see you have quite a bit of snow too, we got dumped on about a week and a half ago wit 4/5 ft of snow here in NS and expecting another storm tonight. All I can say is bah humbug.
I am with you on the bah humbug! I think I should have been born in a tropical area as I never tire of sunshine and heat. We are expecting a week of rain starting tomorrow. I am not going to complain as I am so happy it isn't snow!
I just starting using Diatomaceous Earth, food grade, sprinkled on top of my trays already started. Usually watering with mosquito bits water does the job but this time it wasn't enough. I have heard using insecticidal soap will also work but I have not tried that one. I did use horticultural oil but that didn't do the job. For the adults using the yellow sticky traps works well but you need something with it to get the damaging larvae.
I had the gnats returned when I started lettuce. It went out the door and sprayed the soil of remaining plants with insecticides soap as I can’t handle that mess again. Couldn’t believe it worked. I have sticky traps also. I seen one of the larvae😮 it was huge! I can see that they were eating roots and suspect that’s why the propagation cuttings weren’t doing much. I will try seeding delphs inside soon. Tried in WS last couple years and was a no go. I’m sure they must be tiny like foxgloves. Thanks!
I forgot about using DE on my plant seedlings for the gnats. I may have to get some soon and try it again so that the ones that are infested don't infect my ones that had been sterilized. Glad the soap worked for you!
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse my thoughts about DE is once it’s wet it no longer works. The larvae are soft bodied and if they don’t come to surface on dry DE I don’t think it would affect them. Don’t know as I’ve never tried it, just bits of info I remembered. I just know I can’t have those things flitting about again-and aphids. My husband had a great idea! I was going to use the grill and get some recyclable aluminum roasting pans to heat the soil. He said we need a new Nesco pan insert and why not use the old one and heat soil in Nesco? Perfect!! 🤩 and I can set it outside. I’m thinking to spritz the soil with water (for steam) and cook at about 200*F for about 20+ minutes or so and that should cook the nasties!😂 Love the video and was just drooling over NZ website. Was watching her vid on starting seeds also. I think if I just cover with clear lid and skip newspaper it should work. If I can get petunias to grow then these should 😜 I hope.
Just found you today. Great info. What state are you in? The gallon jugs are a great idea. How would the delphiniums work under a grow light? I love delphiniums.
The delphs work great under grow lights, I am bringing these ones in to grow on my light racks. The next video will explain a bit more. I am in California.
Would you list the seeds you planted today. I got the delphiniums but I couldn't understand the others. I tried to find them in the transcript and that didn't help either. Thank you
I am wondering if I have made a mistake ... I gathered some seeds from my Delphiniums last year and I am planning on trying to start those indoors tomorrow.... I am wondering if you have had any success using seeds from your garden ???
Yes, I have but I hadn't really stored them correctly so my germination rate was less than the seed I bought. Now I know if I collect seeds I will store the in the fridge.
@@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Thank you ... I went on line and found some information on how to plant them and that said to put them in the refrigerator for at least a week so I did and now I will be keeping my fingers crossed ... !!!
I have numbers on the tray for each row and I have a written list of which one is planted where that I keep in my garden journal. And yes, I do know what the leaves look like, after 40 years of starting seeds and gardening you get the hang of it.
I loved this video, I think delphinium is one of the most beautiful blue plants I’ve ever seen.
I have to agree with you, they are such a big statement in any garden!
Thank you so much for the delphinium germinating advice! I tried the damp paper towel method and it worked!
Isn't it amazing!

I love them and have had great results, I do hope you have the same.
Those are some gorgeous delphiniums! Good luck with your delphiniums! Bonny
Thank you, I do need a bit of help as I can be negligent at times and seedlings don't fare well if you don't pay close attention to them.
Another great video! So much useful new information! Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Loved this video! ❤ I just sowed some Delphinium seeds in my garden, this is my fist time so I’m very anxious and excited 😊

You can also sterilise the soil in the microwave on high for 1 to 2 min .

Out of the whole bag of seed, only 1 single seed as sprout. 😂 I wish I would’ve found your video before i planted/or should say attempted
Oh dear! I will say they can be tricky.
If a seed needs sunlight to sprout does vermiculite block the sun?
Sprinkle it extra lightly on seeds that need light. Enough will get through.
I noticed you do not label anything. You moved the square tray of delphinium so possibly turned the square. Do you just know what the leafs look like?
