    An inexpensive soldering iron is really helpful for poking holes.

      Yes, thank you and so does a hot glue gun, but I have limited electricity in my greenhouse and going the route of something not needing power is why I do the other. When I am indoors I use other things.

    Just use a soldering iron to make drainage holes so much neater and quicker.

      There isn’t an electrical plug available so how do you suggest I get it to work? If I am in the house I just heat the tool with my gas stove, so no need to buy a soldering iron. I like to save money.

    Good morning, and yes, I am in zone 4a, canada, and yes, we have a similar growing time.

      Good morning! Yes, it is amazing how people think because I am in a "warmer" zone that I must have a longer growing season. It tells me that folks still don't know what the zoning actually means for them. I am so glad you chimed in. We who are still stuck under snow or cold while others are getting out in their gardens need to stick together for encouragement so we avoid garden season envy.

    Yes, I love winter sowing also. I have grown up to 50 jugs beginning in January and ending early March in zone 5a, southern Wisconsin. I grow perennials such as delphinium, echinacea, scabiosa Fama white and blue, dianthus, asclepias and penstemon. Annuals that I grow in jugs are snapdragons, annual phlox, dianthus, bells of Ireland, rudbeckia, clary sage, nigella, larkspur, alyssum and stock. I make sure to put a small amount of seeds in each jug so I do not have to separate later. We get enough snow or rain so that they germinate well. Thank you, I enjoyed the video.

      Wow, 50 that is amazing but it sounds like you have great success. I am sure you garden is gorgeous!

      Hi! Same location and had failure from the too warm of winters here. Last year wasn’t good with rain in Jan and February did a quick change to snow and noted the seeds look like they were sprouting.
      This year it’s warmer yet and think I will wait until after this upcoming rain as it looks like the weather will cool down.
      I searched for answers and Geeky Greenhouse confirmed what I thought had happened and suggests to set on east side of building.
      I also had 50 or so containers last year. Good thing I saved some seed from a few perennials I wanted and will sow them inside. Didn’t have any problems in 2022.
      I do know that foxglove will be blooming this year👏🏼👏🏼and they still look like they are growing. Crazy weather.

    I have a wood burning tool that I love to use to melt holes into plastic. It stays hot once plugged in & you can get a lot of holes made quickly. 😊
    I need to find a list of the hardy perennials that I can winter sow.

    Ive just started collecting my plastic containers as well. ive only done winter sowing for a couple years. I didnt do it last year, but im in the mood now, gotta get back in the dirt! My big mistake was not putting enough drainage holes! I think ill try potting soil on some of my seed starting this year. Ive always used the specific bag of seed starting soil.

      For me the potting soil worked just fine so I wish you great success! Last year I had a few struggles too with it as we had so much snow for so long. But that is the way it is in gardening, some years are great and others you have a few busts. We just know not to give up!

    Do you grow any greens in the house during winter, we live rural and I need to keep a fresh supply of lettuce. I'm wondering how to do it without having problems. Thank you for all your tips.

      I haven't this year so far, but I do need to seed them and get them going inside. I had seeded some in the little DIY greenhouse and the chickens got in there and tore up the area but I can get some started inside and put out there. Thanks for the reminder, I forgot about doing that!

      They like a cooler room and good grow lighting. I keep lights on for 12 hours/day. I have found potting soil all seems to be infested with gnat eggs and suggest sterilizing the soil. I didn’t have gnats until I started lettuce this year. I will need to sterilize soil from here out. If you are in a warmer area you could grow in a cold frame.

    Can you do a video on how to use the adjustable light on the lighted growing shelves? I have one and don’t know when to raise and lower and which plants it matters for.

    Statice is a semi-cold season annual similar to stock, snapdragons, violas, etc. Possibly not AS COLD HARDY as some of those

      Yes, I noticed in my greehouse that they are still doing well even after our 19F weather we have been having. I always thought it was more tender. I learn something new everyday.

    I want to propagate my 2 streptocarpus flowers using leaves. While im waiting for roots to start and new growth to pop out, does the actual cut piece of leaf need lighting?

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think so, when I had Streptocarpus and would propagate I just put the container with the leaves up on top of my refrigerator, check them daily when I poured my first cup of coffee and waited. There was no extra lighting, only what it got naturally.

      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am in zone 8, our average night time lows can be 15 to 20 degrees. This winter has been unusually warm so far. No I don't heat my greenhouse.

    I always use my soldering iron for melting holes into things. We get those food trays a lot here but they're always black not clear, dangit

      I have heard about using that, I don't have one. Yes, many of our take out food containers are black as well.

    When winter sowing does the outdoor temp need to stay below a certain temperature ? I live in zone 9 and I’d like to try but during the winter we can get temps in 60s and even 70 but have cold snaps in the teens like we have this winter. Thanks!

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most say that you need temps down into the 30s at least at night but give it a try with some things and see how it works for you. You might be pleasantly surprised. If you are to get warm sunny days, just place the jugs in a spot that is more shady. The jugs can heat up fast. If your temps are staying warmer then you can sow things that enjoy the warmth. The seeds we typically sow are the ones that need stratification, cold temps for a period of time, for better germination but many of the seeds will germinate just fine without that.
