Now Super Mario is one of the most recognizable video game franchises in the world, standing alongside Pokemon and The Legend of Zelda. With such a high level of fame, imitators are sure to follow. You see this all the time in other facets of media. People making rip offs of famous movies, TV shows and games. In fact, some movie studios make an entire living off of making cheap rip offs of the latest summer blockbusters. Other terms that fall close to rip off including the words reference and homage, but today we will be looking at some of the more obvious cases of people ripping off Super Mario.
These kinds of games don’t even shy away from being complete rip offs of the Super Mario franchise, whether that is with the name, the aesthetics, the gameplay or all three. These are some of the most shameless rip offs of Super Mario we could find. Now let us be clear, Mario does not own the concept of platforming, but there are some games on this list that will make you wonder “what were these guys thinking?” If you liked this video, let us know with a like. -and Mario is not 155cm and actually is 121cm according to calculation-
Mario is Italian, but also, it seems a bit confusing because Nintendo used different appearance in people to explain Mario's cartoony looks compared to the New Donker's so he might be his own race of human as well, but an Italian Mushroom Kingdom person, I'm not really sure, I always believed Mario was Italian since I was young, probably because I heard it before, and it makes sense somehow, -unlike that 5 foot tall Mario crud that people keep regurgitating all over the place all because of an out dated statue, which, I never heard of Mario being 5 feet tall when I was younger as well, but I heard of Kirby being 8 inches back then-
Mario and Luigi are from the Mushroom Kingdom in the games and from Brooklyn(As stated by cartoons and that one film), Since when is Brooklyn in Italy?

OK, Im just gonna say so here. Mario is Italian but He is from Brooklyn, implying that he lived there but was born in Italy. Also the cartoons aren’t cannon nor is the movie and that Mario and Luigi don’t have last names.
Flappy Bird wasn’t removed because of threats from Nintendo.. The creator (Dong Nguyen) stated in an interview with Forbes
“Flappy Bird was designed to play in a few minutes when you are relaxed, but it happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.”

yep, and also, the assets are not copied, from Nintendo. The background and the character have an art style reminiscent to Super Mario World but they are original art work, the pipes at least were redrawn pixel by pixel.

Giana Sisters actually had a happy end. They actually had taken the thing to court and WON, and it actually created a fairly good series, even ironically enough getting a game on the DS!

i don't think flappy bird can really be considered a rip off but the pipes definitely looked exactly like in super mario. don't think this would have made it neccessary to shut down the entire game though. just make a court ruling that requires the flappy bird devs to change their pipes into something else. or at least make them look significantly different than (is "than" even correct in this case? maybe "to" would be better? i'm bad at english lol) the super mario pipes. then everything should have been fine.

I heard that the reason why the guy who created Flappy Bird took down the game was because alot of people were getting addicted to the game and he didn't want everyone to get so addicted to it so he decided to take the game down!
You left out the biggest Mario ripoff Pandamar on the Power Joy, which was a different name for the Power Player Super Joy III, a console filled with a ton off ripoff games that came out in the early 2000s. Nintendo took legal action against the makers of the console and the FBI arrested a guy for selling them at a mall, 4 chinesee guys, and confiscated 60,000 consoles. that perfectly fits the description "Super Mario Rip Offs That Got What They Deserved".

For flappy bird I think another reason it was taken down because on the ending, a certain youtuber recorded his friend playing it with 999 points and in the end Mario shoots fireballs you have to avoid and after he jumps on you, dead

It was very shaky legal ground to begin with on that one. All assets used may of been similar but were original to its creator. Nintendo had a lot of power in those days.

I remember a game called LSD Monkey from Night Shart Productions. It is nowhere to be found nowadays. It wasn't a Mario clone, but it's worth mentioning as far as lost media goes.

Amy Katt not necessarily. A game like another game can also be an interpretation or its own unique game. But when it copys the style in hopes people would mistake it for the original, but don't give any unique content itself, usually not even doing the things the original does that well, it's a rip-off.
If they try to make you believe they are the original, they are a rip-off. If they do anything they can to make sure people know it is a different game, it ususally is not.

"Monino" is actually just a phone port of the PC fangame "Mega Mario". Also, Super Mario 64 HD is being developed by some other guys and they are already at v1.4, which contains some full stars from BOB and WF too.

Defending property is a way to deter theft even if fan based (non-commercial). Yes, you could eventually lose your rights at some point if you simply cross your hands and stay quiet.

The Great Giana Sisters brings back a lot of memories of me playing it back on my C=64 the late 80's. I dont know if it was ever legally sold in the USA, but it was widely bootlegged through Commodore BBS's and trading parties back then. If you didn't have a NES it was the next best thing. It played as just smooth as Super Mario Brothers, and the totally different soundtrack from the C-64's SID chip was a big improvement over the NES's square wave beeps and buzzes. Great video!

More than that, it set legal precedent which established that gameplay can't be copyrighted, which was a pretty significant sea change in the legal landscape. Can you imagine what games would be like if, for example, ID software had a copyright on First Person Shooters?

By the way, I wouldn't say Flappy Bird is a ripoff of Mario, borrowing assets is not the same as copying the entire format of a game, if that was true, basically every mod in history would be a ripoff.
Flappy bird isn't an original game by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I remember playing flash games with the exact same formula as far back as 2008, but to call it a Mario Ripoff, that's not really true.
