Thanks for the video. I had replaced the carburetor and couldn't remember where the mechanical connections and springs were supposed to be. Initially I wasn't even aware that the engine had a governor, let alone how to adjust it until I watched this video. I've watched a lot of videos in an attempt to resolve my dilemma but they seemed only to be concerned about disabling the governor.
You have just saved my pressure going to the dump and after stripping and cleaning the carb and changing the fuel the problem was the adjuster under the fuel tank had come loose, hardly surprising as the engine was running rough and vibrating prior to undertaking the cleaning and adjustments I made as per your video. Many thanks for your excellent presentation skills.

not related but I have a gx340 with a brand new carb and is running lean only on choke, is an aftermarket carb, the valves were recently adjusted to the correct settings and still having the same issue, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks
I removed my governor from my 212 and it has a very fast takeoff but then goes down to about 30 mph cruising I don’t understand why it’s not hitting top speeds I cleaned my carb changed to a performance spark plug still the same. Any suggestions??
Found out what that small spring for. It's for a separate throttle. So I didn't need it. My problem was the valves. Adjusted both valves and engine run well. Throttle working as it should now.
Thank you for posting this. My engine is idling very high. I followed procedure but the butterfly on the carb is opened to the max (like you show when pushing the gov arm to the left) so when I try to adjust idle screw it has no effect since screw is nowhere near touching the butterfly linkage. Is this common issue? If I push gov armature to the right while running it slows idle but when I let go it springs back to the left and idle returns to very high.
I found a mini bike in the trash and it does the same thing. Did you ever find a fix? I looked at a lot of videos and it seems like no one has the same problem. I don't know what to do.

My engine shuts off if I push the lever to idle. It does have an on/off switch. The problem I'm facing is it dies after starting. The oil is at the correct level. The gas tank is vented at the top to a line that runs to the air box. There is no obstruction. P19 carburetor replaced. Gas tank cleaned and filter clean.

Richard Prince sounds like the governor came apart inside the engine plastic button fell off? If the governor is adjusted while running it can eject the button inside. If u turn the governor the wrong way it will make a buzz sounds from gears hitting the governor arm , disassemble and reassemble to fix
I changed my carb and the engine is still spurging and runs best with choke half engaged or fully engaged. Seems to die if choke is off. Is this an ajustment I can make??

@@motoprof1441 everything looked right there, but I wonder if the insulator is not that flat anymore. The gaskets are really thin, so...I will put a new insulator and eventually a thicker gasket. Thank you for pointing the possible issue.

Hi, This is a nice video which points me in the right direction with my MTD engine which looks similar. However I noticed @:50 that the spring on the rod was off on the governor arm side, does that have to be off to do the adjustment???
Another concern is, should these parts get a coating of any sort of lubricant as part of off season maintenance procedure to prevent corrosion, binding or rust? IDK how old that engine in the video is but my MTD 265-SUA on my Craftsman 24" snowthrower for four years old doesn't look as shinning. Needless to say that if we have in mind that Sears Craftsman is still great back in our fathers and grandfathers day, we are in for a very big let down as this crap is made in China!
Found this in a thread. Most all snowblower engines have Chinese engines in them. Just look at the tiny starters on them compared to american made engine starters. Here's the info I found. "I have been tracking this for a few years now.. here is the update for 2013: The State of Snowblower evolution, 2013 model year. Tecumseh snowblower engines, up to 2008, were always made in the USA. Briggs & Stratton engines were made in the USA for the majority of its history. Around the year 2000 (perhaps earlier in the 90’s) Briggs began their smaller gas engines in China. Up until 2008, probably 90% of snowblowers were 100% American-made, both the snowblower body, and the engine both. Tecumseh had the majority of the snowblower engine market before 2008, and Briggs was still making their larger engines in the USA. Only the smaller Briggs engines were made in China. Tecumseh pulled out of the small gas engine business in 2008. 2009 was the last model year that snowblowers were commonly found with Tecumseh engines on them. (2009 model year were machines that went on sale in the Autumn of 2008) Since 2008, Production of small gas engines has moved to China in a huge way. In 2008, perhaps 90% of snowblowers had American-made engines on them. Only 5 years later, in 2013, probably 90% have Chinese-made engines. Not shot rings. There is too much gasoline in the mixture or oil gets into the combustion chamber. Check your spark plug and search for a guide on reading spark plugs; that will tell you exactly what you need to know.

How do you convert a gx110 that was a pressure washer into a motor i can use for a mini bike. Need it to run off a throttle cable

No it's not. That should of been installed. It's actually not the governor spring. It goes over the governor linkage.
Does this give the engine it's full horse power? Is this similar to bypassing the governor?

damaged recoil mechanism, take it apart and check spring or replace the entire recoil

Check fuel flow to the carburetor. If it's good, you likely have an air leak between the carburetor and engine block.

Cracked insulator or torn gaskets that goes in front of the carburetor? Gaskets installed wrong?

Take the air cleaner off and check at which position the choke is actually closed. Just had one, the label was incorrect.

my governor spring goes the other way around on my 160 F 4.0HP which is a honda GX160 look alike.
That sounds more like a tuned Honda gx120 clone than a gx160, the gx160 gives out 5hp at the stock 3600rpm

Good eye RH. I didn't notice it was off until you pointed it out. It should be on, but will not affect the adjustment at all.

BTW, my friend thinks that if my Craftsman should ever go F.U.B.R. (F*ed Up Beyond Repair) that I should get a "Husqvarna" as he swears by them...
The engines in my videos are all brand new. You could spray down the engine with WD-40 after the season is over to help stop corrosion.

Only 5 years later, in 2013, probably 90% have Chinese-made engines. And the percentage of American-made engines continues to drop. Soon it will likely be 100% Chinese engines on all snowblowers, lawnmowers, garden tractors, and anything with a small gas single-cylinder engine.

Beginning this year, 2013 model year, "Made in the USA" stickers have appeared on engines of Ariens machines, which have the USA-made engines:

But this is the first model year those stickers have been seen on those engines, a handy spotting feature!

Simplicity - (made by Briggs & Stratton)
Four models remaining in the 2013 lineup with American-made Briggs engines:

The rest of the models have Chinese engines.
The Briggs brands are using the old Simplicity and Murray designs for their snowblowers.
Since 2005, the Briggs names have included Simplicity, Snapper, Murray, John Deere,
and Brute. John Deere and Murray snowblowers are no longer being made. And Brute
is 100% Chinese engines.
Husqvarna - The evolutionary successor to the old AYP snowblower line.
One model remaining with an American-made Briggs engine.

Husqvarna also makes Polan snowblowers, Poulan has 100% Chinese engines.
That makes Eleven total snowblower models in 2013, from three manufacturers (Ariens, Briggs and Husqvarna) that are still 100% American made, both the snowblower, and the engine both. And the percentage drops every year. Soon it is likely we will have all Chinese engines on all snowblowers.

Which engines are the remaining American-made engines? Only three US-made snowblower engines remain:
Briggs & Stratton 305cc 1450 Series
Briggs & Stratton 342cc 1550 Series
Briggs & Stratton 342cc 1650 Series.
ALL other snowblower engines, including all Briggs engines except those three models, are made in China..(the exception being perhaps Honda snowblowers, who perhaps still makes some Honda engines in Japan, and China as well.)
But there are definitely only three remaining US-made engines.

Disclaimer 1 - yes, I know..someone will bring it up! I am aware that when I say “100% American-made snowblower, both the snowblower body and engine both” that is not *literally* 100% true! Because some *parts* are made overseas..The American-made Briggs engine likely has parts made in China inside of it, and perhaps the “Made in America” snowblowers do as well! But im not concerned about that.
This is my criteria:
If its made in a factory on US soil, by US workers, then im calling it “Made in the USA”
If its made in a factory on Chinese soil, by Chinese workers, then im calling it “Made in China”
Im not concerned with the exact origin of every last nut and bolt.
Disclaimer 2 - the above information is likely incomplete! Especially the “100% made in China snowblower” data..there are probably several brand names I am missing. Also, The above list primarily focuses on 2-stage snowblowers, because it is believed that 100% of Single-Stage snowblower engines are made in China, and have been for some time.

You and me both. He says clockwise, he turns it clockwise but the caption says anticlockwise. Turned mine clockwise and it seems to work.

Not shot rings. There is too much gasoline in the mixture or oil gets into the combustion chamber. Check your spark plug and search for a guide on reading spark plugs; that will tell you exactly what you need to know.
Clean air filter...check make sure choke is open. Clean carburetor.

My throttle spring doesn’t is not move throttle? Wondering what I am doing wrong?
When the engine is off, the governor pulls the throttle open to full throttle. That may explain why you are not seeing the throttle not move.
I think my govener arm is bent, I’m not get any tension off the throttle spring? Thanks again for your help
