I love Iowa, it's one of my favourite ovals in IndyCar (then again, I like pretty much all of them apart from being meh on Texas). The races in the Universal Aerokit era have tended to be pretty good and I love the bullring aspect of the track. Somewhat surprised the NASCAR Cup Series has never raced there until now though. I remember watching the 2019 IndyCar race on TV at home; here in the UK the race was meant to start at around 1am and probably finish around 4, so I assumed that I'd be able to at least get some sleep afterwards. Well, a storm had drenched the track and it took hours to dry, so the race didn't actually start until around half-4! Then about 50 laps in it rained again and there was a red flag. Now it was around 5am! During the red flag my dad came downstairs, having got up because he thought it was an hour later than it actually was! The race did get underway again and it was actually a pretty decent one, though I did doze off near the end and missed a crash (Ed Carpenter hitting the wall, I think), which meant that I woke up and saw that the race was suddenly under yellow for no apparent reason! In the end, it finished at half-7 ish. I was bushed! Though the IndyCar paddock must've been bushed as well; local time, the race actually finished on the following day!
@@DoglegMediaMatt It did. Iowa was easily his most competitive weekend. He finished 11th in the first race but could've easily got a top 10, and he delivered on that in the second race with a 5th place. To be honest, Johnson was competitive on all the ovals in 2022 (albeit less so at Gateway I think), but he still struggled more on the road and street circuits.
@@DoglegMediaMatt And it was nice having him around, even though his performances were somewhat painful to watch at times! Apparently his work ethic and attitude were great and really valued by Ganassi though, and I believe Álex Palou said that his advice on how to manage a championship fight was very helpful. I liked that he was clearly willing to learn and work on getting competitive in an IndyCar, it was a big step to change disciplines like that, especially at that stage of his career. It might not have been the most successful but I think he had some fun along the way!
Hey I was at that race that Brad won in the Xfinity series and work for the company that sponsored Kyle Bushes car. My boss' family regrets sponsoring him and not someone else
Matt, I know Indy will be after Homestead, here were some memorable moments 1994: Brett spinning Geoff 1995: #3 wins the 2nd race Dale Jarrett starts tradition of kissing the bricks 2002: Bill Elliott wins brickyard 2005/2007: Smoke smoked them all at the Brickyard For the 500 part: 1982: Johncock beats Mears by 0.16 seconds 1992: Unser Jr. beats Goodyear by 0.043 seconds 1969: Andretti wins 500, starting the Andretti Curse 2011: Hildebrand crashes on the final corner of the final lap, giving Dan Weldon the win 1911: Ray Harroun wins first 500 2000 & 2015: JPM (also raced F1 and NASCAR at Indy) wins the 500
Indycar has a more significant history at Iowa Speedway than NASCAR does. You just kind of glossed over that. Also in 2021 the track lost all dates except for a lone Arca race. There were talks about it not working financially and demolishing the track. Then Hy-Vee and several other sponsors joined in to save the track. In one weekend they would have an Indy lights race, 2 Indycar races, and 4 concerts featuring big name county artists. They would also bring in extra temporary grand stands.
These are my moments Jeff Gordan's final race Tony Stewart's final race Brian Scott's final race Carl Edwards final race Elliott Sadler's final race Danica Patrick's final full time race Marcos Ambrose's final race and Sam Hornish Jr's final full time race Ben Kennedy's final race.
Fantastic video. I was hoping this track would be on the schedule at some point. Always enjoy the races in Iowa.

Love all this! I also believe Jimmies best INDY finish came at Iowa!

It’s in newton. Nobody from newton goes there because you can’t smoke a racetrack
When stenhouse blew up, Edwards got stuck in oil from rickys car and slid into brakes locked.
