  • Eat a millet bhakri every day - Guideline 4 of the 12-week fitness project 2023
Did you know that poor cooking skills can come in the way of staying healthy? While we all know the importance of millets and that they are rich in fibre, amino acids, Vit B, minerals, etc., most of us don’t know how to actually include them in our daily meals. So, we resort to eating nachni chips or multi grain breads or something like that, invariably packaged and processed. Is there a way for us to eat millets where we can access all of their nutrients and create no ecological waste?
Yes, there is. And it is a well-known one. Just use your millets and convert them into a bhakri/ rotla. Eat them with a sabzi, dal and chutney. I know that its tough to make the rotlas and that they break but that’s why I am here to share a kitchen secret on how to roll them without breaking - Add warm water while kneading the atta and then hand press them before you put them on your iron tava.
Why you should have millets - Apart from being inexpensive and easier to grow, they are a rich source of many vitamins, minerals and fibre. E.g. -
    - Niacin, a type of Vit B found in millets is useful in energy production, nerve health and keeps the digestive tract healthy. If you have food intolerances, this is very helpful.
    - The magnesium, Zinc and fibre found in millets make it an excellent food for blood sugar regulation, especially for PCOD and Diabetes.
    - The folic acid helps with iron assimilation and improves skin, health and fertility.
    For best results -
    - don’t mix millets randomly (like multigrain breads), have them one at a time.
    - finish the meal with jaggery & ghee.
    - add a chutney (which is also going to be the next guideline).
A quick seasonal guide for millets -
    1. Bajra and Makai are for the winters - eat them with gud & ghee
    2. Jowar is better for summers - eat it with a chutney
    3. Ragi is year around and can even be turned into a dosa, laddoo etc. In fact, even bajra is an excellent laddoo to prevent hair loss.
So remember - A millet bhakri a day, keeps the dullness away.
P.S. - Millets are not a replacement for your rice and wheat roti, which you should continue having.
In week 4, you will have to follow all the 4 guidelines.

Short cut for new comers . Bhakari flour can be added to boiling water in equal quantity like in ukad we have for modals . Make a dough with spoon as water was boiling. Adjust with extra flour or water as u knead. Roll bhakari with rolling pin.

It breaks or becomes too sticky to roll

It's a trial and error method...as you make every day....you learn to perfect it . Even I had lots of difficulty sometimes it breaks and sometimes sticky....gradually I mastered it....taught my immediate relatives...now everyone makes it .

Millets can reverse any disease. But please don't stop ur thyroid medications abruptly. It needs to be tappered down. Please ask ur doctor to taper it slowly while you are on millet diet. Kindly refer to Dr.Sarala kadarvalli (M.D. Ayurveda).

Hi Rujuta, please guide whether we should give salt to kids less then 1 year old or not as our dadi -nanies used to give us salty food when we were in that age but everywhere on net everybody is saying that we should not give salt and sugar to the kids below 1 year as salt effects our kidneys adversely if given at the age of less then 1 year. I have a baby girl of 6 and a half months and I am confused whether I should give salt in her food or not.

Millets are great but still they need to be consumed according to ones own constitution. Like anything in nature there is always a flip side. A person who has a predominant vata prakriti or has aggravated vata, everyday millet can do more harm than good. This one thing fits all is completely opposite to what ayurveda teaches

    • @aprilarianme
      @aprilarianme ปีที่แล้ว

That is a breakfast or tea time snack. It has a different nutritional function.
Crabs are good in winter for their heat but don't work in summer.
      That is how it is.
We are not having Thaalipeeth as a meal.
      Also, we have bhajniche vade.
It was had with chicken and limited things.
The problem is that today we have a plethora of things and people combine different things like crazy.
Sabudana Vada in a meal with chicken.
Does not make sense and doesn't help in terms of time, nutrition and even effort.

We want to eat healthy and it's not poor cooking skill. Since cooking has become sole responsibility of woman, they don't want to give more hours to household chores by cooking items which have not been tried before. Specially when women is also required to manage the house and do professional job at the same time.

Does these millets as a type of crop have equivalent name in Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit or any Indian languages ? If India want to take these indigenous crops to the world it is important that we call them by their original names such as jowar, bajra, Nachni etc Japanese use their own own words such as Manga, Ikegai, Ikebana, Origami, Nori internationally.
