    This song is based on a poem by J.W.Goethe. In 1782, of course, there were still no airplanes. Here is the old original:
    Erlkönig - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (english translation):
    ho's riding so late where winds blow wild
    It is the father grasping his child;
    He holds the boy embraced in his arm,
    He clasps him snugly, he keeps him warm.
    "My son, why cover your face in such fear?"
    "You see the elf-king, father?
    He's near! The king of the elves with crown and train!"
    "My son, the mist is on the plain."
    'Sweet lad, o come and join me, do!
    Such pretty games I will play with you;
    On the shore gay flowers their color unfold,
    My mother has many garments of gold.'
    "My father, my father, and can you not hear
    The promise the elf-king breathes in my ear?"
    "Be calm, stay calm, my child, lie low:
    In withered leaves the night-winds blow."
    'Will you, sweet lad, come along with me?
    My daughters shall care for you tenderly;
    In the night my daughters their revelry keep,
    They'll rock you and dance you and sing you to sleep.'
    "My father, my father, o can you not trace
    The elf-king's daughters in that gloomy place?"
    "My son, my son, I see it clear
    How grey the ancient willows appear."
    'I love you, your comeliness charms me, my boy!
    And if you're not willing, my force I'll employ.'
    "Now father, now father, he's seizing my arm.
    Elf-king has done me a cruel harm."
    The father shudders, his ride is wild,
    In his arms he's holding the groaning child,
    Reaches the court with toil and dread. -
    The child he held in his arms was dead.

    This is one of their strongest songs. Its one of those pieces that would make perfect sense in a symphonic concert, with a big choir and large string section.
    And it was the first song where I thought that Rammstein was more than just a metal group, but something special that will be remembered forever. Not just commerce with everyday topics, but art. The way Till plays with the German language here, how he digs into the drum accents during the verses ("hörst du denn den donner nicht ?") Is at a level that few people can even dream to reach. His performance especially during the climax is so captivating, and on top of it all it's perfectly orchestrated. Every detail fits.

    Also Flake once was very scared of flighing as well as the current Dabei Lama himself. I also once was reading a sweet story. Flake said that they where flying back to Germany after they where giving a concert in Mexico. They came into a thunder and a flash stroke the plane. Even the light went out. Till was just writing something, but because of the missing light, he anyway could not continue. Richard was waving "goodbye" and Flake himself was feeling very scared. Till was sitting next to him end realised it. He calmed Flake down, by laying his hand on Flakes. I guess this is why it sticks in my mind. I find it a very sweet gesture of Till. Thanks for the reaction.

      Flake's fear of flying was a big problem for him as the band became more successful and and many performance venues could only be reached by plane. In one of his books he describes, what he did to cope with it. Probably the funniest story is, that for a while he had a piece of debris from a crashed plane in his hand luggage, because he said to himself that a plane that had already crashed would not crash a second time.

    I kinda enjoy when the plane shakes due to my love for rollercoasters, but can of cause understand the fear..but the smiles can help other not be as scared or panic..it's not that you can do anything as the plane goes down but to embrace the fact that you may die.. If on a boat you can try to jump into the water but it's a little harder 20.000ft up in the air, so you can just smile and wave.. :)

    On the CD of Reise Reise just as you start the CD you can rewind it into the negative to hear a black box flight recording from a real airplane crash. The front cover of Reise Reise is a black box flight recorder. In some countries they removed that little hidden recording though due to sensitivity.

    God this song. Sends shivers down my spine everytime I listen to it.
    When Till sings about squeezing the life our of the child I hear a faint sorrow in his tone as if he is choking back the tears.
    The poem is from Der Erlkonig (The Elvin King)from Wolfgang von Goethe. In the poem a father is on horseback with his son and is traveling home. The father thinks he sees the elves of the forest. He sees their glowing eyes and holds his son tight so the Elvin King doesn't get his child and in doing so suffocates the child in his arms. So dark and beautiful!
    Who rides, so late, through night and wind?
    It is the father with his child.
    He has the boy well in his arm
    He holds him safely, he keeps him warm.
    My son, why do you hide your face in fear? -
    Father, do you not see the Elf-king?
    The Elf-king with crown and cape? -
    My son, it is a streak of fog. -
    "You dear child, come, go with me!
    (Very) beautiful games I play with you;
    Many colorful flowers are on the beach,
    My mother has many a golden robe." -
    My father, my father, and do you not hear
    What the Elf-king quietly promises me? -
    Be calm, stay calm, my child;
    Through dry leaves the wind is sighing. -
    "Do you, fine boy, want to go with me?
    My daughters shall wait on you finely;
    My daughters lead the nightly dance,
    And rock and dance and sing to bring you in." -
    My father, my father, and don't you see there
    The Elf-king's daughters in the gloomy place? -
    My son, my son, I see it clearly:
    There shimmer the old willows so grey. -
    "I love you, your beautiful form excites me;
    And if you're not willing, then I will use force." -
    My father, my father, he's touching me now!
    The Elf-king has done me harm! -
    It horrifies the father; he swiftly rides on,
    He holds the moaning child in his arms,
    Reaches the farm with great difficulty;
    In his arms, the child was dead.

    In the original Goethe describes the story of a protective father trying to save his feverish son by riding him to a doctor.
    During the ride his son gets fever dreams of the god of death calling him to him and his daughters while the father tries to calm him down.
    In the end the fever takes the son just before the father arrives at the doctor.
    In the Rammstein adaptation father and son are both in danger and again only the son hears the calling of the god of death in the winds.
    This time the father doesn't try to calm the kid, but instead, holds him and suffocates him in his panic.
    Here death doesn't take the child, but instead the father fails his role as protector and hands him over.
    I see it as a look on the problems of parenting in the modern time.
    While in the original, the father is the hero who does everything right and is willing to do anything to save his son, fate still takes him.
    The modern father is so occupied by his own fear of dying that he doesn't even realizes that he is about to kill his son and fate only has to threaten.

    Nice video, I really like your content. Regarding to the meaning and death of the child in the song I once heard an interpretation that the father is overprotective over his child and kills it by squeezing it too hard and not letting the child deal with difficult situations. The child is dead in a sense that it never really grows up because some parents don't let their children experience bad stuff which will result in an adult who can't take care of itself.

    Though Rammstein are famous for their hidden, lyrical double-meanings, I think even the original poem is basically a gothic horror story with the intent of conveying a sense of dread to the reader instead of a profound message; the song is meant to do the same thing, I suppose.

    Rammstein songs would be so simple if this song was just about a father accidentally suffocating his child.
    I once heard from someone that the song was about overprotective parents. However, I doubted that helicopter parents were such a phenomenon back then. This line of thinking, however, gave me an idea.
    What if it is not about parents, but here the state is criticized for interfering too much in the lives of citizens?
    Due to their origins in the punk scene, Rammstein have enjoyed a special freedom away from social constraints, which they have more and more lost over time.

    • @xsezz
      @xsezz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, sounds complicated. You could be right, I have no idea. I was expecting a second meaning as well but from the looks of the comments, everyone only has one.
      I thought, it would be something like: The child is being tempted by different societal pressures, warns his dad about it but his dad ignores him, until it's too late and his son has fallen prey to said pressures. I have no idea...
