    I think that they are following the 3d print equivalent of the Mantic Games' strategy. Make the GW proxy forces to draw people in, and then eventually sprinkle in your own unique IP armies/games once you have an audience. I would like to see them keep up both types of forces in tandem. While GW keeps disenfranchising their customer base, why not stand on the sidelines and pass out cake to draw people in. That is just extra resources for them to pump out more cool stuff!

    Using OPR rules (for fantasy or sci-fi) any old Start Collecting box is a full 750+ points army. I know because suddenly my random collection of impulse buy stuff makes sense. Oh, and I can have lore accurate forces too, just like I'm doing with the Crimson Fists/Black Templars/Adeptus Mechanicus/Orks royal rumble in the Declates Crusade.

    Someone about a month ago suggested that 3D printing was idiot proof. At the time I was sitting on enough money to buy three or four of the Christmas battleforces since I don’t really buy models unless they’re in big bundles.
    I had signed up to one page rules Patreon back in November on their second tier it cost about as much as a rulebook and a codex and I just wanted to support them because they put all the rules up online for free. So This person had a link on her channel to Anycubic. So I went over and bought a mono X. This is probably the best miniature based purchase I have ever made.
    Turns out the monthly STL that you get on patron happens whether you know about it or not. After I got a printer and looked into it I had a lizard man army, Beast man army a robot legion army some alien hive and the eternal dynasty armies just sitting there waiting for me. Plus bases game aids markers little rulers. DICE!
    I think they’ve said that they’re going to be coming out with demons in the next couple months because they’re playable in fantasy and sci-fi. So if you’re in the demons there’s a heads up and I think they’re redoing sisters.

    • @Rakaziel
      @Rakaziel 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are finishing the Saurians in April - June (and scifi Jackals in May-July) - then 4 months of demons (July - October) and then Sisters and Ratmen (if I remember right) - Albeit the best Ratmen deal is Resin Warfare's campaign on MMF - and Archvillain Games' March release. There are more but these are the ideal "starter pack".

    A point that i never see being considered in videos about 3D printing is that being able to print your own miniatures gives you (the user/consumer) the freedom to create and modify or replace all miniatures with models that you see fit your own imagination. Of course, there has always been green stuff and kitbashing for that BUT, the first requires high level sculpting skills whilst the second forces you to buy entires boxes of miniatures and still constrains your wish of customization within boundaries related to those already existing shapes and designs.

    OPR is so much better now than GW. I freaking love theirs approach for rules and models distribution. And the rules are superior! I watched on my collection of codexes and can't stop laughing of myself how stupid I was. Wargames doesn't have to be bloated and complicated to be fun. Should they continue making new factions instead of rehashing GW and Mantic? Absolutely, it's important that the option is still there but I think it'll garner more respect as a game system with that aspect of it's growth. I also think that the Unit Builder is the most underrated feature that OPR has to offer for its game system. You can do "counts as" for the vast collection of Confrontation, Warmahordes, Runewars, and any other game system or miscellaneous miniature out there but it sure feels special when you can tailor those minis to your unique vision and I would love to see the feature expanded to custom abilities and spells. I ran the equivalent of a Frostgrave wizard and his crew against my friends' stock Ogres list for a game of AoF Skirmish and we both had a blast.

    As to your last question, I think that new army/faction types would be great. However, they should always have a new model type for prior releases coming out too. Like you said vehicles are hard...maybe they come out with better ones to refresh the range.

    This reminds me of what happened to the music industry when the music industry was dragged kicking and screaming to internet distribution. GW is at that crisis point where it is easier and cheaper to print your minis rather than buy GW minis. Someone at GW really needs to have a new vision for the future, and doing it how it's always been done just isn't going to work any more.

  • @Searinex
    @Searinex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should do a video on the My Mini Factory Tribes and Patreons to show how many options their are, and also etsy 3D printer that sell models much cheaper than GW, for people that don't want to buy a 3D printer.

    I would be happy to see OPR producing WH proxies alongside their own lines. WH 1st edition had the supplement, 'Forces of Fantasy' with armies from the orient (including vim-to monks), Norsemen, Gnomes, Halflings, Sea Elves, Giants, and lots of different types of goblins. Would be interesting if another rules system picked up some of these lost treasures.

    I've become a OPR convert. Grimdark future has actually gotten me excited to play 40k again (it's been a long time). As to whether they should keep rehashing GW armies or focus on new stuff? Well there's room for both, although I'd like to see more new stuff in the long run. Sorely tempted to invest in a 3d printer.

    I do thing it needs to be said that 3D printing doesn't really work for some people who live in tiny apartments, or share an apartment with many people.
    The things spit out toxic fumes and waste products that aren't super safe unless you have a dedicated room with ventilation.
    OPR has a solution to that! Most of their minis are available officially on Only-Games as pre-printed resin miniatures, and they even have Starter Armies that come at a discount.
    I share an apartment, and have a tiny room to myself, so that's way better for me.

  • @RogerBurgessIII
    @RogerBurgessIII 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Should they continue making proxies or forge ahead with new armies?
    It's gotta be both. Which sounds like a wishy-washy, "I'm not making a decision," option, but it's not. They need to pull in dissatisfied WH[40k|FB] players AND they need to develop their own identity. The Eternals are *amazing*, but so are their Beastmen. Oh, and Beastmen are a viable faction now.
    One thing about this model of business is that, and I don't think I've heard anyone in the GW/minis TH-cam community talk about is the rather insidious process of GW *deliberately* power-creeping armies through codices so that there's always one or two "the best" armies for that season, half-year, whatever. The fact is, GW will NEVER, EVER actually "balance" their game because they want to sell minis and rulebooks. OPR? Doesn't work that way. The rules are free. That is a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference in how the two games are played, respectively. Look at your beastmen army. Ready to go from the get-go: Is now and always will be balanced. Or you could wait another few years for a couple of pages in a magazine somewhere, you know, like normal people do. ;)

    Also, you don't even need to buy a printer nowadays, there's so many print farms and places that offer printing services that you could get your entire army printed and never need to touch a printer yourself. A local game store in my city does that already, you can go in, browse their model selection, get it printed, and pick it up next day depending on what model(s) you wanted.
    There's also print hobby groups that usually will offer a printing service to get stuff printed off too, not to mention second hand printers are usually less than half retail cost too.
    But if you really want to go all out mini painting and hobbying then spending a couple hundred on a printer is way more value than buying from GW or most other mini producers.

    Before 8th edition I actually built a basement army. I actually remember buying some members for the basement Army from a guy on Craigslist 50 bucks got me two sets of Gor's and ungors, a painted great unclean one, a sixth edition Giant, an 8th edition giant that had been converted with some plague boils on it, Bela'kor and 20 Bestigors all for $50. And then of course I acquired some other models from saving up my tip money when I was doing pizzas and then going to the game store to buy the beast herds. Think I bought eight boxes.
    The 2 minotaur lords I called the Red Bull and the Black Angus.

    Great video, I have a couple notes
    1. I really appreciate you pointing out that people can print these models themselves, i do think it is worth mentioning that resin printing isn't always as simple as 'buy printer, pour resin.' I think it's also worth mentioning that my FGLSs have well operated printing services available, and I suspect that many other FGLSs across the world have similar.
    2. I just checked out OPR mmf store, lot of really good stuff there. I really like the Eternal Dynasty models, and I think they could be proxies for Tau, but also SM honestly. It was the one chunky boy with an arm cannon pointed in my face that said 'woah, that's a centurion.'
    3. I could use some help though. I really like AoS DoK, but I'd like to print some proxies, however i haven't been able to find..... how should I say..... appropriate sculpts. I think GW did a GREAT job at making the DoK models 'in bikinis, but serious business.' almost all the models I have been able to find so far have been, well essentially lewd, and that's just not the look i want in an army. So i was hoping OPR was gonna have a DoK flavored army, but I didn't see any. If you know of one, please let me know.
    3. I also like gnolls quite a bit. The Bonegnasher Gnolls from Artisans Guild on MMF is an awesome army. I love their aesthetic and they printed up super well on my Phrozen Mini 4k. Also, I haven't bought or printed them yet, but the Howling Horde from Archvillan Games also looks crazy good.
