  • Today I visit the grave of PC David Rathband, who was shot by Raoul Moat in The line of duty.
The 2010 Northumbria Police manhunt was a major police operation conducted across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland with the objective of apprehending fugitive Raoul Moat. After killing one person and wounding two others in a two-day shooting spree in July 2010, the 37-year-old ex-prisoner went on the run for nearly a week. The manhunt concluded near the town of Rothbury, Northumberland, when Moat killed himself following a six-hour standoff with armed police officers under the command of Northumbria Police

I’ve just received this lovely message from PC David Rathband’s twin brother.
    Hi Paul
A friend sent me your video regarding your visit to my Brothers resting place.
Thank you for being respectful and for your kind words whilst there with him.
I’m glad you appreciated his head stone, that was the hardest thing as his Brother that I had to do.
Sadly, you missed the inscription on the back!!
David I’d in fact buried next to his Niece, Naomi.
If anyone wants to actually get the truth, this is as truthful as it gets.
On David’s stone there is also a medallion that if you scan it. Will take you to a page with his story!
    Thank you for being respectful
    Regards
    Darren Rathband

This is just about the saddest story I've come across. That a keen, active and professional police officer should be forced to try to start a new life and not succeed. A man of true courage. His story always brings me to tears. I have the deepest respect for David.

A beautiful memorial to a PC Rathband , noone can know how someone is feeling , but he left behind a legacy of the blue lamp to help others injured in the line of duty. Once again Paul thank you for bringing this to us.

It must have been so difficult for David to carry on, especially to make the decision to leave in the way he did!! Such a tragic incident and what a loss of such a good guy.
His memorial stone is beautiful, what a fitting tribute to a true hero!! God bless you David, rest in peace!! 🙏

4yrs ago this october, i was in that dark place my self, i'd just gone through a break up, the anniversary of my mum's passing was that month and also the stress of possibly facing another "i don't believe you" esa assessment. I got help and few months later, i was sent someone who gave 3 extra reasons to get up in a morning and face challenges head on. We're now looking to close the gap in the near future and i'll be starting a brand new fresh start as a step mum to two amazing daughters.
Enough about me, this is for PC David, may he rest in peace and to everyone who is in a dark place, don't be afraid to speak out, there ARE people out there who WILL believe you and WILL help you

Samaritans don’t give a monkeys. One of my friends lost his wife, and because he rang 10 times in a week, they banned him and threatened him with the police. He had cared for his wife over 30 years. Samaritans can go to hell in my eyes

This incident happened just down the road where I lived, absolutely tragic for those involved. PC Rathband was parked on a roundabout, when Moat shot PC Rathband. There's a backstory as to why Moat targeted the Police. He had already murdered his Exes boyfriend in Gateshead, absolute scum. R.I.P. PC Rathband.

My take on this is that there is a special part of Heaven waiting for those vulnerable souls who have been driven to take their own lives because of the evil of others, and David was certainly one of these. I lost my adored partner to Parkinsons Disease and dementia in January. I was his carer for the last 4/5 years of his life. I want to say 'thank you', Paul for your videos. They give me the chance to stop for a while and contemplate the suffering and grief of others. Rest in peace, David.

What a brave man , thankyou Paul for your compassion and great mention of talking to someone if you feel desperate or alone. I was a samaritan for 6 years , and it was something I am so grateful I was able to do....I will never forget the first time a caller actively ended their life on the call , I still think of that night , but it was also amazing when that long call just talking made a difference. You are so right , that talking can be a way to see the light in the distance....and we can never know how it feels for another person , we arnt living their journey . This was worth having to wait to catch up on 🙏

This one was a very tragic case, PC Rathband just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and had his whole life ruined by some thug.
That's got to be one of the nicest and most touching headstones I've ever seen, with those indivdual messages from his parents, twin brother, and three sisters, and I can see the ones from his wife and children at the bottom under the angel statue. He was obviously loved.

I can understand why he hung himself he had a beautiful wife and beautiful children and not being able to see them grow after having the world in his sight must have been absolutely horrendous and couldn't see a future and thought he would be a burden. People you love aren't burdens you do things out of love. But having had such a full active life you can understand his thoughts. I feel for his family they must have suffered so much but he's at peace now and I hope moat is rotting in hell. Nicely, sensitivity presented Paul as we have come to expect from you. Well done. I was having a conversation with a friend the other day which I think is relevant to David Rathband’s case. It goes without saying that anyone in the emergency services or the armed forces should be able to carry out their job without fear of attack by or on behalf of those they are employed to protect but when it goes wrong there should be professional help and support from within the organisation for whom they had worked. The fact that David felt compelled to set up an organisation to fill this gap within the context of emergency workers support clearly shows that this help was not available at the time of his horrific injuries. It is time that all civilian and military employers were compelled to have formal structured systems to take over the care and rehabilitation of their employees who suffer injuries both mental and physical as a result of the job they do. I fully appreciate that there are wonderful organisations out there doing immensely important work in this field, indeed, the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre is only a few miles from where I live but the type of care they give should not rely on charity, they should be part of the organisation that the injured person had been working for. I also believe that anyone injured in the line of duty and is unable to return to work as a result of those injuries should be classed as an ‘employee’ for the rest of their life and receive their full wage. From what I have seen or read over the years it would seem that these people are medically discharged and that is that. I assume they get a pension (?) but if so, from the cases of poverty we see portrayed on TV appeals, it isn’t nearly enough. The way injured members of civilian and military organisations in the UK are treated and supported needs to change. As always Paul, keep ‘em coming!

Such a tragic ending to such sad circumstances my heart goes out to his family may his soul rest in peace . There is so much help out there but sometimes no matter how much others try to help a broken spirit cannot be mended..what a beautiful memorial to this brave man thank you for keeping his memory alive so often our heroes are easily forgotten
