I am not a fan of religion PER SE, and I've never seen a single place on earth where ignorance is bliss.
Even in your own ignorant heart, as you congratulate yourself, there might be an occasional twinge of anxiety, should you ever find yourself in situation where your life, or the life of someone you love, is threatened.
As for 'religion', that word is offensive to more Christians than you can imagine.
Should you ever deign to descend from your elevated perch and read the Bible in earnest, you will observe how ferociously it condemns all manner of false religion,
including atheism, which absolutely IS a religion despite its denial of God's existence.
if you cannot understand my last point, tou are stuck in categorical thinking and do not understand human psychology. Humans love to worship someone or something, even themselves or their own 'identities'.
It has long amused me to observe the priggish self-righteousness of atheists, secular Pharisees that they are, and also their extreme zeal for proselytism, for making 'converts'.
Furthermore they have their Pantheon, which includes Darwin but should not, because he was actually an agnostic.
Now Darwin's wife was a Christian, and worried about her husband for good reason. I have read statements by Darwin, made late in life, testifying to his dissatisfaction and lack of fulfilment as a scientist. he felt that something was missing in his life.
Now there is a rumor that he became a convert to Christ mere months before his death, but I have no way of knowing whether the story is accurate.
IF it is accurate, I would be very happy about it, but Darwin far more so.
If it is not true, it would be a tragedy, and your malicious gloating would only be temporary.
I would not want you to endure the tragedy of eternal banishment from the presence and goodness of the Lord.

One of my main problems with the religious crowd is because of their nonsense belief in the afterlife, they don't seem to give a damn about how, or even if, we protect the planet we live on today. When people are into CULTS, that's usually the situation.
Logic... common sense... a larger view of or a better understanding about nature, about Earth, about suns & nuclear fusion processes, about planetary formations and life cycles, the life cycles of galactic structures, black holes and the formation of black holes, the life cycles of animal species on earth, the life cycles of a proton (half-life of 1.67 x 10^34 years) or the life cycle of a Hydrogen isotope like Hydrogen-7 (half life of 2.3 x 10^-23 seconds), etc., etc..... REALITY doesn't matter to people who are into CULTS....
It doesn't matter what particular cult they are into.
And it doesn't matter whether it is just ONE person (man in a cave from all other people or one guy chanting dead rituals inside a tiny apartment or a giant mansion, among millions of neighbors in a large city)... or if it is 5 billion members walking, talking, and chanting in unison....
When people are into cults, THEY THINK THEIR CULT is the real deal, the only deal. "Others may have good or bad religious beliefs; but THEY ARE NOT INTO THE RIGHT ONE. Ours is... ours is the ONLY ONE based on a HOLY BOOK. There could be only ONE HOLY BOOK, by THE Creator of the Universe, who came to earth, to dictate THAT HOLY BOOK.... and ours is IT...."
That is the problem, when people are into cults: they think THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES in on "it"... whatever that "it" is... that "holy" or "divine" BS that cults give people...

You are the one who is imaginign things in order to comfort yourelf.
Responsible secular historians like my late father have regarded the new Testament accounts of Jesus' Crucifixion as reliable for a very long time.
There is no variation in the quality of the texts to suggest that its human authors were untruthful about Jesus' Resurrection. It is only that some have made 'a priori' philosophical arguments to the effect that such an event could not have happened.
That assumption does NOT constitute either historical or scientific evidence.
Indeed the historical evidence FOR the Resurrection is airtight. The case is strengthened by the fact that Jesus' disciples were NOT expecting it, but caught by surprise. They thought that their cause was defeated when He was crucified,
and had already begun to disperse when first-hand testimony began to accumulate,
starting with one of the women disciples. (Yes, women did play important roles in the early Church).
....this despite the fact that Jesus had predicted His own suffering, death, and Resurrection; that all these things had also been predicted in various Hebrew Old Testament prophecies, which were not unknown to the disciples.
1st Coritnthians chapter 15 is a summary of evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus. It admits that, had there been no Resurrection, there would be NO CASE for Christianity.
But the author himself, Paul the apostle, former persecutor of the Church, is an eyewitness to the Resurrected Jesus, and he mentions 500 people who had the same experience at one time.
Dr. Michael Brown, Messianic Jewish scholar and preacher, has said bluntly:
If Jesus did not rise from the dead, no one should believe in Him. If He did rose from the dead, everyone should believe in Him.
You place FAR TOO MUCH emphasis on sentiment and imagination, FAR TOO LITTLE on facts.
IMHO, much of which passes for 'atheism' is the extension of adolescent rebellion into adulthood, a refusal to embrace intellectual and moral responsibility.
What amuses me particularly about aggressive atheists is (a) their burning self-righteousness; and (b) their proselytizing zeal.
They have made a religion of their unbelief!!
And a bloody one it has been.
Consider the excesses of the Bolshevik revolution, Russian Civil War, and subsequent policy of 'official atheism' in the USSR.
How you must pine for the 'good old days' when the Soviets used to put Christians in psychiatric hospitals.
Have no fear: under Vladimir Putin, as I have heard, one needs a State permit to hold a prayer meeting in one's home.
With Marxism-Leninism dead, I suppose that your next best bet is the Moscow-Tehran-Beijing-Pyongyang Axis.

During several decades inside Evangelical Christianity, I never met a single Christian who was intellectually convinced that the claims of their faith were objectively true. Being intellectually convinced isn't even something that is considered.

@@Onionbaron Yes ... accepting the dogma as "true" because of reasons other than being intellectually convinced that it is true. These reasons include:
1.) The social pressure to comply with the group's expectations so as to remain in the group. Many evangelical Christians have grown up in the church, and so all (or nearly all) of their friends, and often many of their relatives are also evangelical Christians. To change their mind about the truth of their religion risks them losing many of their friends and social networks, and sometimes even being disowned by family.
2.) A "Pascal's Wager" type mentality, where you've got nothing to lose by "believing" in the Christian religion if it turns out to be wrong, but potentially a lot to lose (i.e. eternal conscious torture) if you don't "believe" it and it turns out to be right.

That's where the fear, confusion, and the beginning of guilt planted It's negative seed. When we began to really mature into young men and hormones started to rise, this moral weight got so heavy. I used to agonize for days because I had a "wet dream" because I remembered who I was dreaming of. The difference between Christianity and being spiritual is that no one can tell me I'm not spiritual but to be a Christian I need other people who call themselves Christians to say that I am a Christian or else I cannot be identified as one. I could call myself one but I would be lying because I don't believe in a lot of the things I read in the Bible but I do read the Bible and I do pray to Jesus. Essentially I believe in a higher power that I call Jesus. In my mind if people can believe in magic apples and talking snakes I can believe in anything I want and it can be reality to me unless objectively proved false by someone else. Whether or not there is a God. Up until present days it would be necessary to have an idea of a God just to keep people in check just to keep people from rising up. What's the best way to keep someone from taking what you have but to make them afraid of someone that they can't see. Because of organized religion in this world will never reconcile with itself. Vanity is a sin by do women do women want to walk around with mustaches. If I don't have many friends on Earth or relatives will I suddenly have lots of friends in heaven. Is God going to personally be my friend. Everything that makes us what we are is part of the human condition we sleep is there sleep in heaven oh my God my mind would just be going all the time when I eventually get bored I'm an artist but when I get bored how creative can you be in heaven you'd be singing hymns all the time. We habe adult people all over who swear it is the book of god but if I as a 10 yr old kid knew it was fairy tale and supernatural shenanigans, then how are these adults functioning appropriately in society??? If I thought what I read in that book was reality, I would think that I had become insane and should be in a psych ward. Ever wondered this? How so many middle age adults blindly believe in that book??? When you really think that through, it is very unsettling about the psyche of most of America. These half of Americans believe in something that is absolutely supernatural and good. That god is the opposite of good. This deity if I fact they are the one deity (spoiler-they 100% are not) allows on a daily basis unbelievable amounts of young children to die in complete🎉 agony while their parents watch and are inconsolable. The sound of too much fucking food in their disgusting throat hole. They gave become the beasts of mankind. And now! They are everywhere you look. Back to the bible. Read it if you haven’t. All the way through start to finish. After your done this first time, ponder these stories. Question their reasoning and also why are they in this book. The answers you’ll likely come up with won’t be the answers the church or other Christians want. They all have ulterior motives. The motives most likely are the pressuring you into believing and becoming an official “brother of god”. Don’t fall for this cult like pressure nonsense. Be true to yourself and only to yourself. The “lessons” that are supposedly in there are man made simpleminded shenanigans. Hunan beings are borne with morality. It has to be taught to us better as we grow but don’t let them tell you that without religion there is no morality and that we are borne in sin. This is obvious child abuse!!!!! To tell a child if you do not believe in this “whatever” they will spend eternity in hell- this is child abuse no matter how it is argued. I’ve heard it all. No theist can answer this one straight with logic any logic. I asked a priest this once, and just as I thought I was below his class and he looked down on me and smirked… in that moment vividly entrenched in my mind it confirmed everything I ever thought about priests. I almost asked him, “how was the sodomizing of those young boys huh??!!” That would’ve brought him down a peg. Speaking of. Did everyone forget about the priests sexually abusing young boys for a long ass time??!!! They did this forever and ran through thousands of little boys!!! They sure sidestepped that massive controversy in genius fashion. short circuit and lost neurological connectives are borne with zero sins. We are not borne evil???!!!!! This is a massive lie with clear intentions to of indoctrinating children in living fear. Shame on these Christians…We have evolved to know basic human morality. It is a disgrace to the human race that we need a book to know about Hunan morality. “Do onto others as you would have them so unto you”. The golden rule. He says that the purported goal of Christianity is to 'safeguard the eternal well-being of human souls.' WRONG.
One cannot 'safeguard' what is lost.
Christ came to REDEEM the lost.
As He said, 'I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.'
It's not a question of keeping the good people and throwing out the bad. 'There is no one who does good, not even one.' That is why Jesus said, 'unless one is born again, one cannot see the kingdom of God.' Being 'born again' has nothing to do with subcultural expectations; it is a metaphor for spiritual REGENERATION. As it says elsewhere, God 'desires all men to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.' 'He does not take pleasure in the death of the wicked.'
Despite some Christians' skepticism, I do believe that Christ will safeguard the souls he has saved.
But JESUS is the agent both of salvation and preservation.
Sam speaks as though 'Christianity' were supposed to be the agent.
His opening words echo a theology, or theologies, whicch are not actually taught in the Bible.
He ought to shut up and begin studying the Bible in earnest, as literature, rather than sitting in summary judgment upon millions and millions of people, past and present, who did or do not share his lack of comprehension. Sam is a blind leader of the blind, snf ejst's worse, the blindness is willful.
Time is ebbing away, Sam. You are wasting your life and others' time.

I politely asked why she needed a supernatural explanation/justification for their actions? She started to get upset, but then calmed right down, I presume because she realized that the very idea of god is in fact supernatural. In the next few minutes I heard that they love Jesus and 'rump and that Hillary should be in prison. When the husband got home he made sure I saw the gun on his belt. By logical extension, if God created all things & all beings, then God MUST have created the angels -- which includes Lucifer!
If God *didn't* create the angels, this begs the question: where then did the angels come from? If the angels were uncreated & eternal, as God is supposed to be, does that not put the angels on even footing w/ the Supreme Being?

To Mr Harris: This is double talk. All "belief" is belief, not the product of evidence. Look up the word. If you go on and on with bad primary assumptions, you get bad conclusions that seem to you to be valid deductions. You are judging reality by what standard? Who are you to decide something is bad and, therefore, God is bad. ??? Do you define "religion?" I know I wouldn't talk about it without defining the topic.
Watch NDE videos, something likely in your paradigm, and you will learn that they return, atheists and scientists included, with the understanding that earth is a "play" where spirits/conscious entities come to become wiser because in the matrix of the hologram, the current term, there is no evil, sadness, and so forth. In the end, life on earth is not an end, it is a means and ones success or death here has no long long term meaning.
Sure, you don't like this abrupt view of your life, but don't makes up incorrect, valid appearing syllogisms and create mis definitions
Actually, many Christians are philosophical followers and, as a result, we have a moral society where a contract is honored. I may be changing, but for many decades that was me, and ardent Christian by philosophy. You should talk to people before lecturing. For folks like you, there is no reason not to kill to get a seat on the bus, other than getting caught doing it. Do you act with love? Why? Why not throw a competitor out a Moscow window or kill a fetus, although if a third party kills a fetus that is called murder.
Mocking people's striving adds nothing. BTW, to be a member of a Christian tribe, maybe "reborn" works, the key to believe is the Ascension. The Bible otherwise is a great manual for morality and, hence, economic stability and peace. Then again, its magical stories, as you say, are being demonstrated all the time.
See Dershowitz on The Genesis of Justice, which is the first 5 books. According Neil Furgeson, the CCP had scholars research why the ""west is better than the rest" and the report said it was an adherence to Christianity, it presents a stable and cooperative society, so the CCP is testing that notion is a town in the northwest. Good idea, lets destroy the great modifier of a murderous tribe.

There is zero logical mechanism to explain why the Hebrews would want to concoct a narrative such as the Gospels or even expect others to be capable of believing it.
If the Gospels are false, then why would a bunch of Jews go around saying that they saw an imaginary person do imaginary miracles, claiming he was then condemed to death by the most powerful Jewish leaders of the time and interrogated by the most powerful Roman in Israel before being crucified under his command.
You could not make such claims as having recently occurred due to the fact they could easily be confirmed as untrue.
You could not make such claims years /decades / centuries later as people will obviously say ...if this really happened we would have definitely heard of it before now.

'In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.'
Perhaps Sam should worry about his own destruction.
he should also observe that, if this truly is a godless universe, the product of happenstance, there are no objective grounds for morality, not even one which he would co sider as valid.
Nor do our experiences have any objectively discernibke meaning.
An atheist who is not also a Nihilist might best be described as a Sentimentalist.
As for 'religion', people ought to define more clearly what they mean by that word. Many Christians avoid it because of its unsavory connotations.
The Bible does not endorse 'religion', except with the strictest of qualifications:
    (James 1:26-27)
'If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worhless. Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.'
It may be possible in rare cases for unbelievers to perform deeds of charity an social justice.
But keeping oneself 'unstained by the world', refusing to accept the false narratives of one's own cultural milieu--------------this can only be done in connection with, and submission to, Him Who is the way, and the truth, and the life.
Atheism, on the other hand, is the sddertion of human Ego against the Truth.
(Psalm 49:20) 'Man in his pomp, yet withut understanding, is like the beasts that perish.'
So prattle on, Sam Harris. Enjoy the praise of your acolytes for a few brief moments
before you are silenced. Who will remember you in ages to come?
if you find the idea of Hell unpalatable, which everyone should, seek to be delivered from it.
Jesus said that he had come to call sinners, not the righteous.

I wonder what or how non believers handle the math issue for the 10 to the 164th power number? Those are the odds for a single protein just appearing from nothing out of nothing. There are so many zeros attached to that number to make it virtually impossible to happen by chance. And we are talking a functioning protein with everything inside sequenced properly all in the correct order! So if math (hard science folks) tells us that this is virtually impossible, whats left. A creator? An intelligent designer? I have no problem with a belief in that area. And you may ask why. It seems to me that belief in the odds of that single functioning protein, simply appearing out of nowhere, is going to take a lot more faith than believing in an intelligent creator. As a matter of fact, based on the math we already know, along with the laws of probability, and also plausibility, it is vastly more plausible that we, as we exist right now, with our massive amount of complexity, were and are a creation! who said proteins have to pop into existence fully formed? lolz. you don't need to start with a protein that's 150 amino acids long. you start with a ribozyme that's only 30 or so nucleotides long, and it'll catalyze proteins for you, and natural selection goes to work. and no matter how unlikely that is, it's still within the realm of probability. what's the probability of a god existing? you can't even begin to compute it, because there's zero evidence of a god or creator or intelligent designer or pixies or unicorns existing in real life. whereas the existence of proteins is a fact.

Language comes naturally for humans, religions are [documented] human inventions / solutions for problems caused by private ownership of Work, Land and Material, another word Capitalism. The first religion was Mitra/Zartosht with its book Avesta, Aristotle " اوستا تابع - Avesta-tabeh" was the teacher of Avesta and Plato " پول تو - poole-to " means "[absolutely] your money", he was arguing for total ownership of wealth/money/metals and the Master Slave relationship amongst people.

    I'm ex-atheist.
My problem with New Atheist always was moral judgment of God.
There's huge problem which Sam Harris exemplifies.
Lets assume that God have his own nature. God cannot do anything against his own nature so whatever he's doing is determined by it.
Shortly speaking omnipotence is bounded by God's nature.
I think some Christians and atheists will agree.
If that so harsh attack on God are in reality attacks on something with which God cannot do anything about.
In my humble view it's the same behavior like condemning predator for hunting or pray for being weak.
God being all powerful doesn't make difference to cruelty of this "moral" judgment.
It only hides the fact of violent nature of those judgments.
It's exactly the same situation like with leftists who allow themselves for no empathy for rich people just because they are rich.
Being weak doesn't makes you good.

Second, my position is that Reality is Self-Evident and Self-Revelatory. You have to demonstrate that the shared Reality we are exposed to is NOT the ONLY Reality we have any evidence for. There is no evidence for a "god" nor is there any evidence for a "soul" that has ever been presented. I don't accept claims without evidence, and religion is nothing more than a series of claims without evidence.
Third, I could argue that TZeench the Demon God created this entire Solar system as a pocket in the Warp, and that He needs "pure" human souls that have not already been corrupted the Warp. TZeench created all human religions as a way to trick people into Believing in ANY god concept and that ALL Believers in ANY god concept are unhinging their souls. If anyone Believes in ANY god, then TZeench will take your soul upon death and torture you to fuel His Demon Engines in the Eternal War of the Warp.

Because the vast majority of the United States, where he resides, is xian. And it has infected our lives with laws based on that belief.

The important question to ask is "what is God?" If you know the answer everything else will be easy to answer.
If we try to define God as a superbeing that somehow resembles human beings (e.g., like a father, lord or king), with human emotions, with the same human image and likeness, then that would be an insult to God's infinite greatness, it's a deep disrespect to the point of mockery. This is probably the reason why people couldn't agree among themselves if God exists or doesn't exist, they're talking about the wrong god/s.
It is a well known fact that energy cannot be created or destroyed, It has no beginning and ending, it is present everywhere from a quark to the entire universe and can transform into matter. God is the Sum of Energies/ Experiences/ Everything (SOE) which can be described as the One Energy. Nothing could be greater than that. God is omnipotent - ALL powerful, omniscient - ALL knowing and omnipresent - present everywhere at ALL times. This can only happen if God is all ALL/ EVERYTHING. God cannot possibly be ALL if God can create something separate from God.
The universe cannot possibly expand because energy cannot be created. It's our ability to see farther that expands. I believe this theory of expansion will be proven inacurate. Is it not possible that the reason galaxies move further is because of an unknown force? It's either our universe has no boundaries or it is contained inside a bigger universe together with an infinite number of universes and so on and so forth. If we can grasp the concept of infinity, we would have a better understanding of what God is.
In the beginning (probably the beginning of our observable universe) was the Word and the Word is God. In other words God is anything that can be described in words. The word God means good while Devil = EVIL (or Sin = Satan). Everything that happens whether it is perceived as good or evil is of God's own doing because God is EVERYTHING which means something good will ALWAYS come out from it since God = Good.
Without the words negative, wrong and bad the words positive, right and good won't exist. If we don't know sadness, we won't know what happines is. Solutions always come after problems. Every wrongdoing of man or unwanted circumstance (e.g., wars, crimes, diseases, accidents, natural disasters etc), are flaws that need to be corrected for a better world. Every problem solved is a step closer to perfection as every weakness is converted to strength.
Without the negative electrical charged electron there won't be life. Without death we won't be able to see the value of life. It's a constant reminder that we should do something great with our lives. Death is not entirely a bad thing, it's just a new life transformed; energy will never cease to exist. The things we've done in our lifetime will impact not just our new life but the lives of others. God is definitely good. Failure motivates us to become a better person especially if we believe that God = good.
The transformation from a simple cell to complex beings such as humans, through trial and error which took a very long time is definitely a good thing. Evolution came about because of chance (which proves that the law of total probability will ultimately favor a positive outcome), and things got better when matter had the option to choose. If energy is movement it's just natural that it can transform into another form of movement such as the living cell with the initial options positive or negative. With infinite possibilities and time anything is possible with God's infinite greatness. The transformation from energy to man is one of them which I believe signifies the importance of Christ's teachings. I don't think God is perfect because obviously we are not perfect and there are problems that need to be solved. I believe the purpose of God's existence is to become better and greater, from nothing to something until God reaches perfection as that is the logical direction. Nothing was ever created only transformed from the basic unit of existence which is Energy.
For me Energy also means "InnerG" or Inner God. As part of the One Energy, we are part of God ourselves or God is inside us. Even non living things and animals are part of God but as humans we are capable of realizing the God in us. Praying to God is just like talking to our inner selves which is connected to everything else. We should always thank God for allowing and choosing us to be part of God's existence and tell God what we can do for God instead of saying what God can do for us, and carry out our purpose of existences which is to get better and greater. Putting up a business that would employ and help a lot of people is great. Operating hospitals and schools as a hobby to help people who can't afford to pay for these is greater. Transforming vast vacant lands into a model community that promotes love and peace, is even greater. The greatest thing one person can do is not potentially that person's greatest accomplishment, there is always a much more better thing to accomplish.
Saying "thank you God for providing me with all I need to become better and greater", "I always think and do what's right" or any mantra that'll make you a better person, repeatedly, as often as you can in your mind, or verbally if you can, until it becomes automatic and forces you to forget and eliminate negative thoughts and actions, will be a tremendous help in your quest to become the best you can be. Consuming only natural food and water, fasting and adequate physical movement play an important role in maintaining optimal health which would aid you to perform your best. Doing your best in everything you do, (ie from folding a shirt to programming micro robots to repair a single DNA strand), as much as you can will train you to be the best you can ever be. Doing what's right, no matter how hard or easy will train you to be better. Don't be fooled by the success or happiness you accomplish by doing wrong.
    Philippians 2:13
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. 13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. 13 That energy is God's energy, an energy deep within you, God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure.
We should be reminded that whatever we do is God's doing. If we all believe that, we would be able to do great things and not blame God for our shortcomings. As part of an infinitely great God we are infinitely great ourselves. With infinite possibilities, I won't be surprised if there are superbeings that can live thousands of years if not forever and can travel as fast as energy can travel because that's where we're going. Human nature consists of problems that are progressively being solved using variables to make an equation perfect. I believe heaven is a state where God's existence is perfect although it's not permanent and an end goal by itself. There is only one God, everything included.
Whoever is reading this I want you to know that I love you so much, please constantly seek and be reminded of the God or the good in you as much as you can. Religion tends to disunite us because of the different beliefs and gods. Let's all unite and believe in one God, the God/ good within us.
Spread the GOOD/ GOD news by being the best you can be and be the evidence that God exists and is truly great.
