- Guitar Cases, Hard Case V Soft Case - Which is best? Travelling on a Plane or Train, in the Back of a Van or on a Bus, and Storage at Home or in a Lock-up... Which is best?
In regard to the humble guitar cover or case, what might at first be an obvious decision for some, is not always so easy for others. Should I buy a hard case or a soft case for my guitar?, what are the pro’s and cons? and is there a need to spend a lot of money on those items? And what about the box the guitar case comes in, should I keep it or ask the shop for a box if purchased direct from the music store? Having had a fair bit of experience gigging back in the 1970’s and early eighties, and in the last 40 years working internationally in the video / film industry… I know only too well the many considerations that need to be made when choosing to protect and travel with expensive equipment, much of it very delicate. The common choices for protecting a guitar range from simple inexpensive dust cover bag style products, through to more rugged and durable soft cases, and of course the hard case which usually takes the form of the classic wooden construction or the injection moulded style of product. In this video I take a look at the various case types that I have for a number of my guitars and my thoughts and opinions on each one. I also take a short overview of storage, stacking and humidity issues. In another video UB32 ( • UB:32 Ibanez M300C Har... ) I specifically ordered a branded moulded case to replace a poor soft bag that came with a fairly expensive Ibanez guitar you can see in UB28 ( • UB:28 Ibanez Premium S... ).
While not an exhaustive look at the numerous methods of keeping your guitar safe, it should help some thinking about these issues. After all, regardless of the cost of the guitar, keeping it in good condition should be important... Enjoy!
