  • Fender Blues Jr Lacquered Tweed V Blackstar Studio 10 6L6 - The Fender Suffered a Mould Attack!!! - How to Clean off Mould & Keep Mould Free...
I’ve had both the latest Fender Blues Jr lacquered tweed and the Blackstar Studio 10 6L6 combo amplifiers for a while now, and apart from the Fender going foosty with mould!!! I finally come to my conclusion regarding which amplifier is best suited to the music projects I am working on. In this video I take a quick overview of both amplifiers along with various audio clips to illustrate these little amplifiers in use, both with effects pedals and none. Probably one of the biggest shocks was the Fender tweed covering ending up covered in mould, and while I demonstrate how easily that was removed and the amplifier returned to its good looks, it certainly serves as a warning that whatever finish has been used on the covering, it clearly needs to be looked after if you want the amplifier to stay looking good. Conversely, the mouldy look did give it a certain vintage appearance but that’s another topic. In time to come one of those amplifiers would be part of a trade-in for a BadCat Black Cat Combo, an amplifier that set's the bar for tone just soo much higher - see here for a review ( • UB:26 Bad Cat Black Ca... )
While not a deep dive into the workings of these two amplifiers, which you can get if you check-out my ‘Guitar Journey’ series on Video 7 (Blackstar - • V7: Playing Guitar 40 ... ) and Video 11 (Fender Blues - • V11: Playing Guitar 40... ) - this overview gives some indication as to the different pedals, amplifiers and software I have been trying out in a bid to help me in my music journey... Enjoy!

My Blues Junior went mouldy too, I think there must be some protein in the lacquer that causes it

Hi Skynyrd, thanks for chipping in... yes, there is definitely something in the coating. Thankfully it's easy to hoover up and wipe off. Just picked up another Fender guitar with a Tweed Case... as far as I can see it's not lacquered but I'll be keeping an eye on it ;-) Regards: Stu

I have a Fender tweed amp that got stored away for 4 years and got moldy , I scrubbed the tweed with a brush/soap and water, dried it to the bone and then painted it with shellac with a bit of dark wax in it, now it looks much better and does'nt smell funny/awful. BTW I abandoned all pedals save 3, wah wah, Dunlop fuzz and a Keeley compressor. The keeley gets used most . Try a Fender 64 princeton reverb handwired re-issue if you get a chance just to let us know what you think?

Hi Giulio - I suppose I was surprised to see it go mouldy because it is the newer lacquered model which I would have though would have given it better protection. It now sits in my Livingroom near the radiator and so far it seems to like there. ;-) I considered trying out the Princeton but was not wanting to put down that kind of money on a Valve amp that would likely weigh a ton. I've played many Fenders, Vox's and Marshalls back in the 70s and some of them were just great... but those were different times. I've had a music store willing to let me borrow gear to do reviews if I mention them, so you never know I might just do that. I've had a number of local folks contact me asking if I want to make videos on various old guitars and amplifiers they have had stored away. I'm just not sure if anyone would be interested in watching stuff like that. Always open to ideas... regards: Stu

Fender Jr pro vs blackstar studio 10.?? Which is better ?

Hi Thawthaw03 - Given what I said on the video, I'm not really sure what your comment means... did you want to explain a bit more? From my perspective I was looking for a small combo that looked boutique and would be capable of reasonable clean tones and a good sounding valve-break-up tone. While the Fender is all valve and the Blackstar is a hybrid design I purchased both and found the Blackstar suited me better. The Fender was traded-in for an all valve Bad Cat Black Cat (th-cam.com/video/sF_IjK0kmto/w-d-xo.html) which I really enjoy... beautiful cleans and valve crunch. Regards: Stu

I thought the tone of the Blues Jr sounded better especially the mids. That said I am a tube amp junkie. I don't like the sound of any amps built in reverb.

Thanks for chipping in... they are different amps for sure. If your interested you can find on my channel playlist that I just recently did 2 review videos on the 'Bad Cat-Black Cat' tube combo and another on the Extension Cabinet that can be paired with it. I traded my Blues Jr and Twin Tone Master amps in for the Black Cat Combo. Now that's a beautiful sounding valve amp and is paired well with its Custom V30 Celestion manufactured speaker - Regards: Stu
