She actually had to fight to get fairly compensated. Her first few albums were with Sony, they (along with her first husband) took the majority of the profits and she quickly went to complete her album deal with them so she would get better deal at another label.

I agree. Mariah is very intelligent yet she has had to emerge with scars in life, making choices that she wouldnt have had not wanted to make if she had options. Maybe most of can relate to that. Life isnt as free as the US Gov claims it is. The politicians have turned this into socialism, my opinion. As an artist, Mariah must have to pay a number of people to help manage things, like her estate - and I hope her security is tight as possible.

Exactly what Prince said about her million dollar contract
Prince was still wrong. Mariah Carey got one of the biggest percentages for her songwriting. I'm not sure if Prince was daft in the situation here. Mariah's contract guaranteed her $20 million per finished album in addition to percentages of sales and licensing fees. I doubt that Prince got 50% of the revenue for his albums.
For context: Mariah was speaking in the context of the streaming era here. However, no matter what she got in the end, she probably grossed $3 billion for Sony Music alone and ended up with a networth of $300 million herself.

Easy for you to say because you don't own a record company. Let's say you own one. And you found your new talent who is unknown. And now you have to spend a lot of money to introduce and promote your new artist. How would you write the contract as far as the percentage of who should make more?

This is basically what Monique and Taraji are saying, in terms of the other part of the entertainment industry, which is cinema. However, Mariah is so involved in the production writing and creating of her music she’s basically the producer , director, and writer of her career so she definitely is more involved in more of the moving parts in her music career so it’s questionable why labels would pay her less than she deserves.
This is amazing to hear- so real. It’s one thing to get there, but to stay there, to become and actual legend, to fight back from where she did, that is incredible. It’s so had being that public. She’s done it well. Love always 🫶🏼

I think this is the realest I have ever seen her in interviews. No diva behavior or holier than thou attitude, very relatable.
Tell 'em Mariah, it should be the creators' and audience's prerogative, not the companies and critics! I had just come off of reading up on Judy Garland and happened with her, remember she passed away at age 47, and Mariah's in her early 50s now, so I have to believe she is SO not kidding about surviving the industry, it's cruel and has been for a long time!
That said, we are all grateful she's let herself give us as much great art as she has... and it certainly doesn't hurt that she is still GORGEOUS! INWARD AND OUT! 💎❤ An ultimate survivor.

This is why what Taylor Swift is doing is so important! Young artists are now following her lead and negotiating their own contracts so that they can own their music and make more money! Olivia Rodrigo did such a thing because of what Taylor did. I winder if after all these years, if Mariah could/would do the same. She has writing credits on much of her music iirc.

She’s one of very seasoned artists who really really knows the nooks and crannies of the music industry, the business side of it. Because she started from scratch, writing her materials from the lyrics, composing with a collaborator for the music, singing the songs & the backgrounds, producing the songs, producing the videos, promoting the records, singing them live, etc. She also married an executive so she knows how much are artists are being fked over by labels if they didn’t have the right kinds of deals. She’s definitely one that everybody would want to get advice from if they wanna jump into this business.

Record companies are operated much like a manufacturing plant who produces a product. The artist, producers and songwriters are all employees who receive their small wages and a few other perks. They will never make the employee an equal partner regardless of how much money they make them. The solution is to start your own company plain and simple.

TLC made this point years ago. But the reality is there are tons of people that need to get paid from making an album: producers, songwriters, technicians, musicians, marketing, backing vocalists, stylists, agents, and many more personnel. Mariah also benefitted from things her label was doing to control the charts, airplay, and album and single sales.

Not sure what percentage you get when you sign with a record company but Maybe a 50% split would make it fair. But you have to remember that the companies have other employees that they have to pay. The people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all happen . So look at their overhead and maybe that will make you feel a lot better. I teach school and teachers who work tirelessly before, after and during work get paid way less than a Principal. I have never thought that was fair!!! But I am thankful for my job as well❤
