Today, we’re going to be answering the question of what does sugar do to your body and the 10 negative effects of sugar.
#1. Sugar can give you wrinkles and adds age to your face
Scientists from the Leiden University Medical Centre, in the Netherlands, measured the blood sugar levels of 600 men and women aged between 50 and 70.
In fact, for every 1mm/liter increase in blood sugar, the perceived age of that person rose by five months.
    www.research.leiden.edu/news/l...
#2. Sugar is Also Associated With Acne
Foods ranked high on the Glycemic Index such as sugar and refined carbs have been associated with greater amounts of acne on the face and body according to the latest research.
A study of Australian men showed that those who ate a diet with a low glycemic load saw a great reduction in overall acne.
It was a small study with only 23 men but is still food for thought.
    www.aad.org/media/news-releas...
#3. Sugary drinks cause an 83% increase in developing type II diabetes
In one study of 91,249 women showed those who consumed 1 sugar-sweetened beverage a day had an 83% increased risk of developing type II diabetes compared to those who had only 1 a month.
#4. People who eat sugar are at a much higher risk of cancer
There has been a direct link seen between breast, and colon cancer with sugar consumption.
    www.sciencedirect.com/science/...
    cebp.aacrjournals.org/content/...
This is likely due to the fact that insulin is one of the key factors behind the growth and multiplication of cells, and sugar spikes insulin to abnormally high levels.
#5. Sugar Can Ruin Your Teeth
A study by the American Journal of clinical nutrition showed that sugar destroys the healthy bacteria in our mouth. This can cause tooth erosions and may dim that bright smile.
    ajcn.nutrition.org/content/78/...
What about sugar and weight gain?
There are 5 proven reason sugar leads to added weight gain...
#6. Sugar is the premier definition of empty calories.
It has no real nutritional value, no nutrients, no minerals, no proteins, and no fiber. Because of this lack of nutrients…
#7. Sugar makes you feel hungry
In a study by Yale University, those that consumed sugar had an INCREASED appetite and desire for more food.
    yaledailynews.com/blog/2013/01...
So not only does sugar fill you with empty calories, it makes you want more of those calories.
This process happens because sugar screws up hormonal levels in the body. Which leads to
#8. Sugar blocks leptin and raises insulin to supernatural levels
Leptin is a hormone in charge of telling us we’re full and need to stop eating. It also tells us we have energy and should go out and use that energy.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...
Sugar consumption blocks this hormone from doing its job and from reaching the brain.
    nutritionandmetabolism.biomedc...
    9. Sugar causes belly fat
Numerous studies have shown direct links from sugar to increased accumulation of belly fat.
Despite knowing all this, it’s hard to stop eating sugar because
    www.jci.org/articles/view/37385
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19...
    #10. Sugar is addictive
Similar to drugs like cocaine, scientists have now shown that sugar causes a very similar release of dopamine in the brain.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic...
Studies on neuroplasticity have shown that drug users have similar behavioral addictions to those addicted to sugar.
    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Point black. Sugar is ADDICTING and comes without the immediate social repercussions of frequent drug use. That’s why it’s so hard to stop eating it.
How much should you eat per day?
None. There is not a reason to be eating this food in your diet, but only on the rare occasion as a treat.
    What about fruit?
Fruit has fiber, vitamins, minerals, water, and tons of nutrients that refined sugar does not have.
    www.bmj.com/content/347/bmj.f5001
Sticking to whole sources like apples, oranges, and berries are a better idea.
What should you do if you can’t stop eating sugar?
I think this subject needs to be covered in greater detail, so either next week or sometime soon we will be making a video about breaking sugar addiction if that’s something you guys want.

Just don't eat sugars for some months. Just don't stop eating sugar abruptly. Then you will not be able to resist the urge to eat even more sugar. Just try to decrease your sugar intake little by little until your addiction subsides. This is the best way.

Especially when friends, family, and roommates encourage it. There are definitely social aspects to sugar which make it hard for people to cut out of their lives, which might be something good to mention in 'breaking people's hook on sugar' video.

The Voidreaver Yea. There is sugar in almost everything nowadays. Even some pizza sometimes it has sugar. Fruit sugar is natural and I think that's not that bad. But eating apples to lose weight isn't the best way neither. Basically I think fiber and protein are the best way to lose weight. But I feel our bodies needs carbohydrates too. At least, my body functioning requires bread and other stuff. I feel healthier with it. And I actually think eggs are great too. I don't know. my body has a lot of needs lol but this struggle with sugar is real. I love chocolate for example and I always buy black chocolate because it doesn't have much milk. and I'm lactase intolerant and it doesn't have sugar plus I can feel the flavor of real chocolate. i don't know why people doesn't like black chocolate. I love it and it helps me to not eat sugar.

to anyone wanting to quit sugar:
the first week is awful, but once you get through that it gets easier with time. also, you might even over eat to compensate. try drinking tea or water instead of fruit whenever you get cravings, that way you won’t gain weight and overdo in calories. keep your mind occupied and expect to get anxious. the first weeks or so are hard, but after some time you stop craving sweets so much. good luck!

Try eating more high SOLUBLE FIBER FOOD like beans and oats, which controls glucose. and your hypothalmus will not crave for the REFINED sugar in the cookie, since the glucose in the blood is 'DETECTED" as adequate instead of "low". Take the time to eat an apple or orange, that what my son do. He tells his hypothalmus the glucose is coming from the apple and it will take a couple of minutes longer than if he eat a piece of brownie.

      1) Table (refined) sugar is straight-up poison, its the devel's food, and public enemy #1
      2) carbs are complex sugars, starches are mega-complex sugars
      3) sugars are IMPOSSIBLE to avoid, glucose is the energy source for our body
      4) EVERYONE likes sweets
      5) Allow yourself one or two exceptions, refuse everything else, My exception is cheesecake
      6) Use natural sweeteners like honey, agave, real maple syrup, stevia, date sugar, coconut sugar, dolcedi

Don't know if you still struggle with controlling yourself around sugar but my recommendation would be to avoid the cookie aisles altogether. Unless the bread is in the same aisle, avoid the aisle with cookies as much as possible. I have learned to avoid two aisles in the baked goods section because I know that's where all the junk food is. Also, at least for me, with sugar, "Out of sight, out of mind."

I've just discovered your channel, and you have a new subscriber. I hope many more come, because your videos are really informative, and not boring at all, keeping it short.
I'm very aware that I have a sugar addiction, but this video was a big eye-opener to me. I remember one week that I stoped eating refined carbs and sugar (only had fruit because it's hard to break an addiction cold turkey), and not only did I lose 5 kilos (about 10 pounds!) that one week, but I was also feeling way better and my very poor intestine was like a swiss clock. Unfortunately, pizza led me back to my spiral.
Anyway, thank you very much for your videos. I'm looking forward to the next one about how to break the sugar addiction!
    Cheers!

That because glucose is our source of metabolic energy, ATP, it for survival of our 10 trillion cells. We just got screwed up with our "glucose thermother" from the processed food industry, but then the farmers are guilty too, they been hybriding fruits to be as sweet as possible too. They have the white pineapple here in Hawaii, and it promoted as SWEETER than the yellow. And I say "who the hell wants it sweeter"????, I don't

That's awesome Polly! What were some of the changes you noticed?

    • @pollyjaneit
      @pollyjaneit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh so many! The best is that I don't crave sugar. Lots of people say that they couldn't give it up because they love it too much, I find it easy not to eat because I don't love it anymore! Now there's no guilt associated with eating and I'm just filling up my body with stuff that gives me so much energy and improved mental health! Even when I have a day of "bad eating" it's still relatively all stuff that's good for me with the same enjoyment as a junk food binge but none of the repercussions! Truly I feel like I'm having my (sugar free) cake and eating it too!

    • @TheHealthNerdTV
      @TheHealthNerdTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Polly this is great! I think people underestimate the benefits eating right can have on their body. The energy, the clarity, and everything in between. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I know people will be reading this and will be encouraged by it :)

Nerd! This video was pure dope in explaining. However recently I woke up and I couldn't eat suggar. I was feeling disgust and even the slight feel of vomit if I put in my mouth anything that had sugar. Now I am about 1.5 weeks sugar free and I intend to keep it this way.
My question is: Is it possible I have some disfunction on my body system that neglects sugar by default? Is it something you have heard again in the past? I have talked with a friend who is doctor and he said what I describe is impossible to happen but I'm saying the truth. Thank you in advance for taking my question seriously.

Today is the first day of my sugar detox. I have been thinking about it for weeks, and watching several Health Nerd videos to change my thinking. Breakfast and lunch went by, and I ate the right things to help avoid cravings. Then someone brought a huge cookie into the office to honor my birthday. Oh no! How do I say "no" without offending their thoughtful gesture?

    • @samymuller9722
      @samymuller9722 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Kylana Garrison one of the hardest things is really to convince others that you don’t want to eat sugar ... I’d say thank you to that person and then politely try to explain, that you want to change your diet ... you can say that you’d rather want some healthy nuts as a snack ... and that’s what I did when having cravings during the first weeks -> whenever I had or have cravings I either eat food with healthy fats like nuts or avocados... Or I snack some veggies ... hope you break the cycle of sugar addiction !
Excuse my English mistakes and greetings from Germany

    • @KylanaG
      @KylanaG 6 ปีที่แล้ว

samy müller Thanks Samy! I have to admit, I did eat some of the cookie because the person was nice to think of me. The good thing is, I wasn't 'tempted' by it, and was able to go back to eating better. This channel is a great motivation.
      Thanks for the supportive words.
