I think discontinuing the ps4 maybe was too extreme, they could've easily updated it with screws instead of the rivets to make it easy to fix

Very confused reading this comment under my original impression that OP was referring to the PlayStation 4, then upon reading the replies about screws and rivets, continuing through to the comment about the BOD halting warranty support, I was all of a sudden wondering if Sony has a serious issue with product quality or manufacturing quality.
Imagine my thoughts upon hearing the narrator of this video, while I'm in the middle of being convinced that Sony has issues, refer to the freaking Squirt multi tool line's specific designation "PS4".........
      Talk about real time feedback
Edit: oh my god I even skipped an entire comment which would have cleared it up!!

The original squirt ps4 did have screws (torx), leatherman stupidly changed to rivets. I have a torx one. The scissors spring is certainly defective but it could have be fixed. I believe Leatherman created the majority of their warranty issues themselves just with their rivets and their scissors spring.

Back when I was on M1A1 Heavy tanks in the 90s and 00s, we all carried Leatherman multitools and a small fixed-blade knife.
A tank will *eat* a mutlitool as well as any watch that isn't a G-Shock. When the Gerber multitools were first released a couple of us bought them but they never held up and the pliers would always break. After that, the entire tank company swore off Gerber forever and everyone just kept buying Leathermans.

Former M1A1 TC here, I had my Leatherman that I had on my tank from the mid 90’s until a couple years ago when somebody stole it. 😢It was the most useful tool I ever owned, so I bought a Leatherman Surge to replace it. I was really surprised how much they’ve improved from the original tools.

I think if leatherman fixed the bendy scissors issue on the micra I'd be more inclined to carry it. A pliers based micra with just small and medium drivers (no blades) would be a great travel tool to replace the style PS.

A useful modification i did with my squirt ps4 was turning the tip of the file into a small chisel. Hi, I'm very surprised with Leatherman's decisions lately. They can be much more, it's been proven. Here in the UK, Leatherman's warranty is to replace straight away, not to fix. I've had my Rebar replaced twice, the second time smaller flat drive just snapped, easy to replace. But they've sent me a brand new tool. I think the quality of replacement tools is lower, also had the reamer and flat driver swaped places. My wife's Squirt replaced twice, like you've said no easy to fix. But Victorinox is fixing the Swisstools, not replacing. I'm not giving up my Classic SD, I have pliers based tool with me anyway. Cheers 👍

I'm now hearing about this PS4 discontinuation. If true, I really don't know what to say with Leatherman and their never ending bad decisions, I carry that tool everyday, bought it years ago when it was cheaper and I have a backup. Also, it does Not give me confidence that when they have a good/decent product, they discontinue it.
Why not improve the tool, make it stronger & easier to repair.

They need to make a "budget" brand with no warranty that sells specifically these "not-profitable to fix" tools. The thing is small and relatively inexpensive, I didn't even think it had the 25-year warranty. Or they need to redesign it, there's no reason the Micra can't have the same or better functionality. Either way, corporate needs to step back and let the designers make a good product.

I received one of the (now discontinued) Juice CS4's for Christmas this past year. Absolutely love it. While that's in a slightly bigger form factor that the Squirt/Micra/Style tools, my guess is that it was a casualty of the same repairability issue you mentioned

Hey, how about pliers in the Micra frame? Kinda like a tiny Rebar :D
There are off-brand tools like that. And they look really nice. I wonder if the Squirt pliers can go in a Micra shell. The Squirt P4 and S4 are interchangeable I think, pliers in a Micra frame could work. We'd lose the scissors, though. Hmmm.
Victorinox sure knows how to make durable tiny scissors and springs. Why can't Leatherman dial in the Squirt PS4 scissors spring? It has been a known issue for a long time, and the reason I never bothered with a Squirt PS4. To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen a broken Gerber Dime's scissors spring.

If your assumptions are correct, not announcing discoing it was because they need back stock for those still out there. They didn't want to make more units for the sole purpose of sitting on them for warranty returns. The quick shut down means they are probably going to just use what they had in stock for returns and end the bleeding.

12:16 Not sure if you were aware but you can still get the Midnite Manager which is basically the same tool with an added Red LED key light.
Personally I'm quite interested in the Nextool Flagship Mini, I want a fullscale scissor but having a good one while keeping the plier seems great. Also, while it may be a bit chunky for a keyring tool at least it has the option and it's still lighter than the Mini Sailor. Either way Nextool seems to be the next big thing in tiny tools.

Thank you for keeping the community informed by the various things posted on your channel.
I am disappointed with Leatherman that they replaced my Squirt with a Micra instead of giving me the option to pick the Style PS. It makes sense that if a product keeps failing and you are losing money due to replacements that you would discontinue it. Another reason to not mark the Squirt as a "Last Call" would mean a surge in sales for the Squirt all with 25 year warranties. These final Squirts would tend to fail around the same time as the other ones which would create a bunch of RMAs for a product they no longer make. A good plan from companies is to keep X amount on hand for warranties before stopping production.
I wonder from a materials standpoint, what changes could have been made to the pliers to make them stronger without making them bigger.
Do the travel friendly multitools actually work? I have a Gerber Dime Travel, but I never wanted to take it through TSA for fear of getting it confiscated, cause it's up to an agent to decide if it is compliant.

Sorry to hear about the end of the Squirt. I´ve had one on my keychain with a Photon light for many years and I use it almost daily. I lost my original Squirt many years ago and had to replace it with the current version which deleted the awl and added the scissors. I´d rather have the awl as the scissor is a superfluous tool at this size. My knife can cut better than the scissors, plus the scissors spring is starting to act up on my current Squirt. I have 3 micra tools. all three I have had since they were newly released in 1996 ( bought all three the same day, knowing I would put one in my vehicle, one in my pack and one in my home desk). they still cut very well, even though I have used the hell out of them. I would like to see the nextool, but as a disabled vet, I really don't have the funds to buy things just to see if they are as good as the one I use. a few years ago, I sent my original PST that I had bought in 1985 in for service, and checked the box that it had real sentimental value, and I did get the same tool back, just with the file and flat head drivers replaced, they also cleaned it and sharpened the blade. I do understand why they are discontinuing it, and think that they would have been much better off just going back to screws. I also have an original mini, and I really wish they had not discontinued that one. it is an outstanding tool. I have personally retired the one I have because I am sure that if it were damaged I could not get it fixed at this point. ( Leatherman warranty USED to be unconditional lifetime) when my house burned down in 1996, we found the very roasted corpses of my other original PST and my one of my two original generation supertools. and sent them in with pictures of the house burned to the ground, and the spot I found the tools. they replaced the supertool, but sent a gen 1 wave instead of the PST. I still EDC the gen 1 wave, but have replaced the supertool with a surge. I have a video on my channel with all of the multi tools I own, and show the original PST and the mini that I still have in my multi tool roll.

I definitely don’t understand why every fold-style tool has to be pliers based. For a Wave, okay… fine. But for smaller sizes, scissors would make a great upgrade. Shame they seem to either suck, or are falling the way of the Dodo.

Years ago I added a layer to my Squirt and added the Dime box cutter to it. Funny thing is, if some guy in his garage can add replaceable screws to the Squirt why couldn't have Leatherman done that? Ya, I know. Cost of production.
I ended up losing that Squirt. Was a great little multi-tool so was sad to see it go.

That was an interesting point on getting the 4 year Amazon warranty... but I can't find the way that you would add that (I'm in PA with billing address in WA). Is that offered upon check-out? When doing a Ctrl-F for 'Warranty,' while on the product page, it only seems to refer to the manufacturer's warranty. Thanks for the videos.

I got my Leatherman Squirt at Radio Shack, so it isn't travel-friendly since it has a blade. But I wanted to point out here that the slot-head screwdriver on the bottle opener in that version tapers down from the bulge to a tip that is the width of the narrowest portion as you said yours ought to have been. Of course, my model was discontinued ages ago*, but I would never have been tempted to over torque its pliers because it is just a narrow gripper at the tip of the 12-to 20-gauge wire stripper.
*Just like my model of the Juice, which had a short, curved, serrated blade for cutting the seal on a wine bottle to complete its complement of sommelier's tools which was also discontinued years before its peers.

Here in European Union (except UK) you can carry to plane a blade no longer as 50 mm.
All Victorinox 58mm knifes has 40 mm blade.
My Leatherman Squirt has 36mm blade.
It are thavel friendly knifes in EU.
15 years ago I worked in TSA, in my Riga city. Now I called to my airport and asked about blades again. The airport info service answer was: I can carry all small 58 mm SAK models to the plane. I purchased Vic Midnite Manager for my sisters birthday- she will get small "travel" knife.

Bought a Squirt for ultra-light backpacking, thinking the quality would be better than the Gerber Dime, since it's well, Gerber. I snapped the pliers within the first week trying to pull out a tag thread off some pants. The Gerber? I've used that to help wrench off bicycle axle lugs. Really disappointing because I liked the Squirt's form factor much better. The Gerber just feels more solid, the tools all snap in and out of place. Managed to get the Squirt fixed probably right before it got pulled. Hesitant now to actually use it for the intended purpose.

I recently had my Squirt replaced with the Micra after the pliers broke. I was using a little bit of rotational force on them while using a Leatherman Charge in the other hand (trying to open a zip on an old pack!), and yeah snapped with not that much force being used really, was quite surprised and disappointed when in happened.
The tiny scissors were quite useless, I mostly used the file and knife. Quite happy with the Micra, I wouldn't use the scissors for anything too heavy so not too bothered it struggles with paracord, I have a Victorinox Explorer I'd be using for things like that, so as an EDC keychain tool the Micra is fine for now, see how it goes.

I don't think the options Leatherman had were just getting rid of the warranty or discontinuing the tool completely. They don't mine them from the earth, they manufacture them. They could just address the heat treat and update the design to include screws. If they realise that the design of any of their tools has flaws to it, they do have the ability to change it and address those flaws.

I carry the Leatherman Squirt on my keychain.
For the most part I really like it.
My only complaint so far is that I went to cut something with the cutter in the pliers back & the metal was softer than I thought & now it has a nick in it.
The nick now effects how easily it closes because the metal is twisted & bent & catches on itself when I try to close the entire tool.
I could fix it probably by hitting it with the Dremel & squaring it all back up but haven't yet done so.

I think I would like a tool that combines the micra and the squirt somehow. Better main scissors that snip paracord as easy as some of the tools you have, give access to the tools from the outside too. I'd use a bigger set of scissors more than a small pair of light use pliers.

Victorinox for the win here. The Spirit beats most leatherman full sized tools and has a lifetime warranty. Most of the Victorinox pocket knives I've had for over 25 years and they haven't ever failed.
Leatherman is cutting corners and raising prices and now discontinuing tools because they can't fix them or have to fix them multiple times and to add insult to Injury, they give you a Micra as a trade for something they won't fix anymore?

Shocked about the cases of Leatherman sending back a micra instead a fixed tool. That is just disgraceful and disrespectful to their customers. Especially, with the point you made that the micra quality isn’t even good. I got a micra a little while back, and have regretted it ever since. It’s just not good enough quality for the keychain/pocket space. IMO the rambler is the best bet for the average EDC. With the exception of lacking pliers, but you know if you need pliers. If you don’t know if you need pliers….you probably don’t need pliers. The rambler hasn’t left my pocket for months and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

I would be absolutely fine if they did away with the warranty the Squirt. To be honest, I forgot there even was a warranty and my plan had been to buy a new one if mine broke.
I can see how people could be willing to push it past light duty usage if they know they can get a replacement under warranty.
