Man, I went down a Father John Misty hole for about 4 or 5 years, where nothing else got me as excited. He's just the full package, not something you see often.

Everyone needs more Father John Misty in their life. I was fortunate to be introduced to him when he released his 1st FJM album - Fear Fun - and I've been following him ever since.
My single most favorite live performance of a song is Father John Mist playing "Bored in the USA" on Letterman. His exaggerated, sarcastic and deliberate choreography fit perfectly with the sarcasm and misanthropic tone of the lyrics. It's one of the most perfect and perfectly-executed live performances I've ever seen. If you like the way he moves and his performance in this video, definitely check out "Bored in the USA" live on Letterman.

He played Only son of a ladiesman on letterman once too, and his performance was great. Very flamboyant, yet subdued and perfect at the same time for the song.

Thanks for this! Often people say Father John Misty songs are simple, but it's so deceptive! They can be so complex! Also really enjoy seeing you watch this for the first time and really GET IT. ❤

You might not know, but he was the drummer for Fleet Foxes. His solo stuff was simple and dark, but as Father John Misty he really went for that Fear and Loathing in Las Vega vibe.

I always wondered what role he played in Fleet Foxes. I never listened to them much but I always tried to pick his voice out. Now I know why I couldn’t lol

Honestly so nuts to have a guy with THAT voice hiding silently behind the drums.

I saw him open for Rocky Votolato and Damien Jurado in 2006. This was back when he performed as J Tillman. He opened the show and blew my mind then ad-libbed drums for Votolato. Jurado closed the night out. Such a great show. To top it all off it was $7 to get in the door and there were only about 150 people in attendance.

I absolutely love FJM. I was glad that he made his way to the microphone where he belongs. I've listened to quite a bit of his J. Tillman stuff, but it just feels like it's missing the satirical wit and dark comedic charm of FJM. He's mentioned in interviews that he found his 1st person narrative voice he uses to write his FJM songs while writing a novel. He also claims he had an epiphany one night while taking LSD. Maybe it was a mix of both. I'm just glad he figured out the formula.

Hey Michael-- I just want to thank you for this video and your channel in general! While my guitar skills will always be stuck at "mediocre" (I don't practice!), what I really appreciate is your enthusiasm for music and your willingness to listen to all different genres of music with an open mind. Ever since you put this video out, I have been listening to Father John Misty almost exclusively, and I never would have checked him out without your video. And this isn't the first time you have gotten me into a new artist, either. You even got me to listen to a genre I had sworn off (country)! So thanks for the great content. I really enjoy it!
