I still remember the first time Radiohead truly spoke to me. I had heard 'em on the radio before, but that was the problem. This was all pre Kid A, and I was in primary school 😂
Then, at the age of 13, I heard Kid A, in its entirety, when the local radio station had "new release Sunday"
It was the first time I was truly in awe of a complete album. I suddenly understood Radiohead.
I have since seen them live 7 or 8 times!

Same. I got into drugs very early on in life and was constantly in trouble. After getting kicked out of study hall, they decided to put me by myself with just the music teacher during that period. We didn’t really like each other before that. But I told her how I played guitar and my favorite band was Pink Floyd. She asked if I had ever heard Radiohead before? No, but I was intrigued. They had just released their newest album Kid A. She actually went out and bought me the cd. I popped it in and as soon as “Everything In It’s Right Place” started, I got goosebumps and my heart was pounding. I was addicted immediately. They are similar to Pink Floyd in the fact that they were able to use their instruments as tools to find the exact sound they were looking for (as opposed to just putting a pretty background to the vocals). They have truly changed my life and the way I look at music. It has given me this ability to be able to listen to every genre of music and be able to appreciate the artists and find the talent that lies behind each one. Without them, I would have been missing so much of the soundtrack of my life. ❤️

I agree, I can remember literally the exact place I was at when I first heard OK Computer. Even the weather. And the cigarette brand I smoked back then. Their early work is way more vivid and impactful for me. But… In Rainbows is still the album I listen to most frequently now a days. It’s an album that doesn’t make me uncomfortable like Kid A, which is maybe a detriment, but my life is more stressful now than it was back when I listened to that album on repeat, so I’m not drawn to it in the same way. The same is true of a lot of their music. If that makes sense…

Yeah it was almost impossible for me to listen to anything else back then. Kid A, I was eighth grade. Loved them all especially Hail to the Thief. When In Rainbows came out, I was listening and waiting to like it when one day my roommate said “Lazy name, lazy music, there’s no dissonance, this is not what I listen to Radiohead for.” And just like that I was over Radiohead.

I've been a fan of theirs since Pablo Honey and I'm probably older than most of these snobs anyway. Their early work showed a lot of talent and genius, and it's what launched them to realize that genius and give them the opportunities to experiment and really run wild. People who can't appreciate songs that play on the radio are missing out.

Their first album, Pablo Honey, came out when I still watched MTV most afternoons after getting home from school. The visceral riff hit me so hard as a young person (about 14 years old) and I can still picture the music video. The Bends came when I was in High School and OK Computer was my first year in college. They have taken me on their musical journey through life. I've seen them a few times live. They really are one of the greatest bands to ever be. As a guitar player, you should really dig into Ed O'Brien's parts, he is so fascinating and gets overshadowed by Greenwood, but his sense of rhythm and space and feel are just fantastic. If you haven't watched it, his visit to That Pedal Show is great.

  • @ChristopherStandardTime
    @ChristopherStandardTime 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    "Where do you start?"
The answer is always, "IN THE BEGINNING..."
You get a better idea of how they evolve when you listen to their records and singles in order of release.
    ------------
Per the 'Guitar World' article, "The Golden Age of Radiohead":
"In general, it could be said that the division of guitar labor in Radiohead is that Yorke plays rhythm, Jonny Greenwood plays lead and Ed O’Brien makes weird noises. But that’s an oversimplification, as any of the three are capable of doing anything at any time."
While each band member receives equal credit, in reality most of the work is composed by Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. Yorke has a great pop sensibility, and Greenwood is more orchestral, as illustrated with his recent film scores.
    ------------
"We write pop songs, As time has gone on, we've gotten more into pushing our material as far as it can go. But there was no intention of it being 'art.' It's a reflection of all the disparate things we were listening to when we recorded it."
    -Thom Yorke.
    -----------+
As someone that's been a massive fan of Radiohead since 1996 and has allowed their work to influence how I think of music, I can tell you that trying to explain a lot of their concepts to guitarists is a slog. The use of three guitarists, the effects, the layering, the different scale usage, the depth of the lyrics, the shedding of familiar paths to chart new territory... most guitarists want to be eddie van halen rather than work together *in ensemble*.
    ------------
"Radiohead is too depressing, so i just listen to coldplay instead."
    a former coworker.
They are not the same band - coldplay doesn't hold a candle to Radiohead.

What's cool about Kid A (and Amnesiac) is how it's placed right in the middle of the discography of a rock band that still caters to people that like rock bands. Once you get to know its influences you realize it's not that strange and not even very groundbreaking. But for people who stay in that sphere of guitar music it _is_ pretty groundbreaking and has so often been a gateway into different realms of music, including to me when I was a teenager.

It kind of features all sides of Radiohead...driving guitar rock (Bodysnatchers), acoustic work (Faust Arp), rhythmic workout (15 Step), paranoid ballad with strings (Nude) and much more, all with electronica judiciously sprinkled in, and some of the strongest lyrics of Thom's career. I had a Mexican Tele converted to a Plus (because after Jonny made them popular they started going for crazy money on eBay). If you want to go that route, you'll need the Blue Lace for the neck and a dual Red Lace for the bridge, and a new plate because the Reds won't fit into the standard Tele bridge. How did you like Street Spirit (Fade Out)? Give it a few more listens and I'm sure it will grab you more each time. Glad you loved Subterranean - it's one of my faves as well. Thanks for sharing!
