Geez Oscar, I'm only about 5 minutes in and your camerawork is really top notch.
These jump cuts with controller actions, flick of a switch lever, a reversing maneuver or two. And then theres that truly magnificent panning shot where midway the Princess glides off.
Throughout there's some very agreeable panning shots...
    Hats off to you sir!
Every time I hear that turntable operate I'm awaiting the appearance of Heinkels on the horizon and shouts of "scramble"...

Because I’m young and don’t have a lot of money, most of my trains are around the same age as these. It’s great to see ur that someone else still takes interest in these older trains

What I find most fascinating is the pioneering Innovation Triang were responsible for. For instance I didn't know they had put front lamps on that model, fourty five years or so later its now standard on Diesel/Electric etc. It is incredible that whatever they put into their toys to improve product sales, all that time ago is now taken for granted in every day use. Zero One Chips being a good example, capacitors for brake lights in Scalextric is another. By the way your insets from the catalogues add to the seemless flow in your videos. They are now even better 😁

Finally managed to get one , wasn’t expecting much for £50 , but it is in mint condition and runs sweet , very quiet and the light works .
This was the loco that was admired through the model shop window but was a bit two expensive when I was a kid , got it from a die cast shop in Darlington , chuffed to bits with it .

Hi Oscar, thanks for another great video. My first ever model railway was the the Inter-city mail action set (probably R172) bought for me by my Grandad in 1975. Watching the mail bags being collected and then dropped off provided hours of fun. Hornby and Tri-ang must have provided 1000's of hours of entertainment for children (and adults!) over the last 70 years. Like a lot of people, my interest gradually waned and the models were sold but I'm now buying it all back again! All the best, Dave.

My brother and I received the whole Duchess of Southerland set one Christmas from my Grandad.....the excitement of opening it and setting it up. I can remember the box now. It's still in my Dad's loft. It stood up really well considering I was only around 8 or 9 at the time. My son had a more modern Flying Scotsman and the power transfer contacts from the tender to the engine seemed to get damaged easily. I felt the quality had gone down a lot but maybe it's just my rose coloured specs as they say.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  ปีที่แล้ว

Must've been a great Christmas for you and your brother getting that terrific set, I think you're right the later models were not quite as robust and those connections between locomotive and tender can be quite troublesome.

Hi Oscar ,, I was telling you previously about some old triang bits ie an old steel turntable & some older items that you dated to approximately from the 1950's to early 60's here in Australia that i was going to purchase around 8 or 9 months ago,, then we had a lockdown here from covid and the guy i was buying them from was just out of the area so wasnt worth risking big fines to buy the old triang bits .. well guess what lockdown finished and I got the bits and pieces and i am absolutley rapped with my purchase.
I got a big box of stuff and in this set there was a royal mail carriage and pick up and drop off bit.
I had to glue the pick up hook and ladder back onto the platform bit and had to make sure it was all ligned up etc so i glued it in place.
I joined 2 of the straight tracks which are grey in colour and are raised and when the carriage runs over the bit in the track bit that makes the the door swing open the carriage derails nearly every time.
I have pulled the carriage apart & the carriage dosent look anything out of the ordinary. IE the mechanisms all work good and
I have run the carriage over the pickup part many times and it does actuate the door to open to recieve the bag from the hook but it derail the carriage.
The raised grey trip thats is built into the track looks to be normal and there is nothing stuck in between the rail so I am wondering if you have heard of this before or not.
The carriage has got the old style open couplings triang on it and the platform has a billboard on it and there is one spare as well.
If you could offer any advice it would be very greatful and appreciative.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

Good afternoon John terrific to hear you got your items eventually. I do know the set you're talking about I've got it in the video sometime ago here's the link th-cam.com/video/SThkM6uxRVQ/w-d-xo.html I found them to be quite reliable although I wouldn't class it as a smooth operation it is a little bit rocky as it picks up and dropped off. If the mechanism is nice and free perhaps try adding a little weight to the coach to encourage it to stay on the rails. Since making this video I've been thinking about getting out the old set to have a go. The other thing that springs to mind is this track is made sometimes of cellulose acetate maybe the track section that operates the coach has swelled slightly.
Thank you again for watching hope you're enjoying the festive season, have a great Christmas and New Year.

@@oscarpaisleyagain thanks for the reply Oscar ,, i do appreciate the info you supply ,, i also got a that steel turtable with road one in and 1 out and I havent hooked it up yet to see if it works or not but out of all the its i got there is a brown little box with a tiny red button on it (R.141 from memory). Is that the actuator to the turntable as it the same colour as the shed thats on the turntable. It (the red button) has a the same as the little red buttons on the little black controller that goes sepeartly to the transformer but dosent seem to do much. Like do you have to hold the red button down to make a contact for the turntable to operate it ?
Out of all the locos i got (R.253 boxed) (R.152 0-6-0 shunter)(R151/153 0-6-0 tank engine) & (R.55/56/57) in the box were not working but after a day of disassembly cleaning and oiling i got all of them to run just as smooth as the day they were made except for the the black diesel 0-6-0 R.152 made in australia and new zealand) it has a lot of ware on the middle drive wheel on the insulated side.. is there any where i can buy new parts or have i just got to make something up so it dosent slip.
Anyhoo thank again for all the info you make for us to watch and enjoy and gain knowledge

I was fortunate to have one of the later versions (91 Night Mail Express) as my first train set with the loco and coaches in BR crimson, mine does have the moulding for working lamps on the footplate but nothing was ever installed, I may have to investigate what modern lighting could be installed 30 years later

Hi Oscar once more again ,, I know i seen this video of yours quite some time ago well fast forward to just only last week on Australia Day 26.1.22 when I ended up fixing up 1 of these duchess of sutherland lms locos just like you are videoing ,, well i had to fix the steel wheels as they come off the rims on both side and the mechanism for where the push rod goes into the main pump at the front of the engine were out of there tracks track well what a pain in the butt to get all that back together and runnin smoothly ,, haha I noticed though on your loco the piston pump rod is chrome steel on yours and my is a plastic pump rod ,, i also got the ringfield motor cleaned oiled going like a clock..
Now heres the funny part about this video ,,
I just randomly picked it out a video from your play list as it had the duchess of sutherland lms loco and noticed when you pulled out the information leaflet with the date of R066 27.9.77 on it well it happens to be exactly my little brothers birthday. What are the odds of that happening haha..
Anyhoo keep the good work and gr8 video there Oscar Imenjoy them immensely.

Hi Oscar. I believe the change in the set number was from when the engine changed from being coloured plastic to being painted. I did have one when they came out but was not happy with it as I was running a H/D Duchess and 2 Wrenn City engines at the time. So was somewhat spoiled for choice. But I do now have another one for my collection.

I brought one of these engines about six weeks ago. It came without any couplings because it had spent most of its life in a display cabinet. Like yours its completely blemish free, and box is similar condition as well. However, when I went to run it, it would not work so I have stripped the motor down and cleaned it, greased, and oiled it. The brushes show very little sign of ware and whilst the commutator was discoloured it took very little cleaning to restore it as new.
My railway set up consist of a metre length of track, lighted buffers to tell me if I have ac or dc power, and it’s connected to my Arduino running DCC++EX and I have an old laboratory power supply left over from my little PCB/Flex circuit assembly company.
I did fit a TCS decoder, and the engine did move freely for a day but them it started to surge. I must admit I’m only putting 5-7 volts which may be a little low. I had enough track to make a simple round layout on the carpet, yes, I know, and I thought the motor may need running in. I set it off at 7 volts but got called away for about an hour and when I returned the engines had slowed considerably. I’m told it’s because the magnet is getting old so I have a new magnet, BUT SHOULD I FIT IT?

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Good evening Laurie great to hear you have one of these stunning looking models sounds like yours is in lovely condition. I'm unsure about the magnet. Have you checked the motor with a meter, mine seems draw about .3 amp I've had good luck so far with style motors and haven't encountered any problems with weak magnets fingers crossed. It would be interesting to hear how you get on with it I've not changed a magnet in one of his motors yet myself.

It was a dog and never ran well.
It is interesting that you took the tender top off because on my model the tender would not stay on at all (nowadays I would reject any brand new model which did this and get my money back).
I also had problems with the tender electrical connection not being right and causing derailments, this turned me 100% against tender powered locos.
The final nail in the coffin were the main loco driving wheels which disintegrated and turned to dust.
These wheels were replaced in the late 90s but to be perfectly honest I couldn't get the loco to run right again and so it has remained in it's box ever since.
To sum up it was a delight to actually own such a beautiful model but it let itself down very badly and failed to live up to it's potential !

Hi thanks again for watching and the info, definitely sounds like a poor version of the model you required. I think some models are just troublesome from the day they leave the factory, the connection between a tender and locomotive is definitely a weak point in the models of this period. Again I think some run beautifully but others even though looking perfect just never work and others you can see the fault but you just can't make it go away! frustrating.
      Take care.

    Hi Oscar,
Great video as ever! A while back you said about your point levers wearing out. The flick switches you mentioned are so much better. I had push button switches, never happy with them. I've totally pulled all the wiring from my layout. A mammoth job! I am now in the process of making proper signaling /point boards the same as you would find in a signal box of yester year. What I have found out is that the point CDU's work a lot better! Plus its (after a lot of very hard work and thought!) a lot more user friendly to use.
    Best wishes
    Pete

Good afternoon Peter you're absolutely right the little toggle switches are much nicer and accurate to use. Great to hear about your rewiring hope you're having fun with it. I think the old Tri-ang Hornby switches look the part! but they are quite fiddly and frustrating at times. Are you wiring in point direction indicators back at the switches? I think I will do this next time, I used toggle switches on my first layout but the last two layouts I used the Tri-ang Hornby lever frames! So I think it's time for a change next time around...
      Take care.

Great video. The mail bag action set must have originated over fifty years ago. So simple but such fun for all ages. Good to see R066 dispelling the prejudice against tender drive locos.

Good morning Andrew yes I think then the TPO sets are a very old items in the range they are great fun, I think I prefer the earlier versions for Standard /Series 3 and Super 4 they are far more robust. I quite like these tender drive models I know they're not everybody's cup of tea but at the time they must've provided some vastly improved running compared to what has gone before and still very smooth today and great fun to run.
Thank you for watching take care.

Hi Oscar , thank you for another excellent video . 1977 marked the final year for many Triang based products as well as launching both Duchess and HST models . I always though the catalogue Duchess looked resplendent in gloss , as it turns out this was the original handmade/painted preproduction sample .

Good morning Paul thank you again for watching glad you enjoyed the video. As you say 77 was quite a milestone year for Hornby leaving the past behind bring on a whole raft of newly produced models over the years to come, it must've been a very exciting time to have been involved with the rapid development within the company.
      Take care.

I was running a portable layout at a Christmas Fair on Saturday, including the older style TPO which collects and delivers on opposite sides. I now know why running through at full speed results in mailbags flying everywhere! Moral: find and read the instructions! I was considering a minor modification to a pick-up hook (extend slightly with a catenary type fishplate) to see if it would collect multiple mailbags, so that I could deliver several at a time from the fiddle area for guest drivers to send back singly from their side (we had two line side sets operating) but a loco change de-railed on the "collect" ramp and dismantled it, so brought that phase to an abrupt end! Great fun :)

Good evening Mike that sounds like a lot of fun those mailbags can get about a bit. Great fun especially the older sets I think they're far more rewarding than the later version's.

Yes well done again. It's also useful seeing the underside traction tyres positions. I uploaded Diesels in The Scottish Alps with one of the Boys. It is very amateur. The light is too poor. I had just serviced the Deltic, but unknown to me my older Son had turned on a shunting controller and the main line started feeding off it. Bit of a clutter compared to your format. Looking forward to the next one you do.

Another great video! I believe the model used for the 1977 Catalog had a body shell of Wrenn/Hornby-Dublo origin repainted for the photo shoot. They were still featuring gloss finishes on their models up to that point. The 1979 Book of Trains offers an interesting perspective on how Hornby made their preproduction models. No 3-D printing in those days!!!

Interesting that the loco picks up from both rails (to work the lights), but the tender just had the traditional 'single pole' feed from the loco - if this had appeared in the Silver Seal range a couple of years earlier, doubtless it would have had all the pickups on the loco, and a double wire to the tender.
Looking at the service sheet, I see the additional lamp pickup is a single phosphor-bronze wiper resting on the tyre, rather than the back, of the front driving wheel, which is not normal Hornby practice - likely it would become dirty after some use.
It's a nice looking model, let down, as are many from this era, by the solid wall of plastic under the boiler.

That was some very high class running today Oscar. I imagine that in their heyday it must have been quite a thrill to ride such a train from Euston to Glasgow. Looking at your model I can fully understand your reluctance to handle it any more than necessary, it is really in beautiful condition. I only have Tri-ang mail coaches and they seem a little crude compared to your Hornby version. Some more items not to pass up if the opportunity arises.
    Regards, David.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good afternoon David glad you enjoyed the running I think you're right it must've been great to storm out of London north bound on a train pulled by one of these fantastic looking locomotives. Glad you have one of the Tri-ang Mail coaches I think they are probably more fun than these late ones and far more robust. I've had a number of derailing problems playing with this later TPO coach and its associated operating equipment. The front bogies tend to catch on the operating ramps as well as couplings on a lot of other items. In one of the clips you can see the front bogie on the Duchess leap up as she passes over the ramp. The ramps are very fragile and sadly damage easily, the instructions encourage you to run at 3/4 power to get the mail equipment to operate properly and throw the mail bag into the coach effectively so the risk of damage to locomotives and stock is a bit high! The coach is a lovely bit of moulding that looks quite terrific as part of the train.
Thanks again for watching take care.

    Hi Oscar,
Great coincidental video given that I bought a Duchess of Sutherland a couple of weeks ago and a TPO at the beginning of the year. As you say hours of endless fun, I don't know why it is so entertaining it just is.
Great running shots and the TPO as well.
The front bogie on my Duchess grinds slightly against the driving wheels on the curve. I don't think there is excessive wear, any thoughts appreciated. The track is Super 4 1st radius so maybe a bit of an ask for the wheel arrangement.
    Thanks again,
    Gordon

Good morning Gordon great to hear you have a Duchess and the TPO both great items, glad you enjoyed the shots of the locomotive and rolling stock in action. I have not run my Duchess on Super 4 yet! But maybe it's a first radius thing or possibly a little fiddle with a back to back on those leading wheels.
      Thank you again take care.

Nice looking model Oscar . The lining on your one looks particularly fine with the black correctly on the edge of the model . I’m sure I’ve seen versions where the straw and black lines are inset on the tender ie not on the edges which spoils the look of the model . The Duchess took over from the Princess . Although I fancied one I think I was put off by the lining in comparison to the Mainline Jubilee Leander which was my Christmas present in 1980 . This had the correct very fine tender lining. Great video as always . Will you be doing a Christmas compilation of running shots . That would be very nostalgic .

Good morning Russell thank you again for taking the time to watch I've just had a look online at the Mainline Lock him out if you mention it does appear to be far superior and detailing especially for the time and amazing looking model. Hornby definitely had a fight on their hands with other manufacturers making a superb looking models at similar pricing points. It's strange this Duchess with its final detail and finish is one of the few models I feel very uncomfortable handling.
      Take care.

Hi great you have that set its lovely group group of models, I think those mail ramps that go in the track are quit fiddle and fragile. I've ended up getting very frustrated with them and taking them off the railway due to the number of derailments. I think the older versions from the 60s and the late 50s are far more reliable and robust and fun to play with.
      Thanks again take care.

Afternoon Jamie I'm using twin coil latching relays triggered when the point motors switch the points. If you have a look at this website www.brian-lambert.co.uk/Electrical-Page-3.html and scroll down to the section headed "Unable to fit a Point operated change-over switch?" The diagram associated with that section shows pretty much how I'm using the relays for the coloured light signals, it also lists all the components needed.
Hope that's of some help. Thanks again for watching.
