Hi Oscar I have just come across this video.
I have a very battered locomotive it would appear they came as Davy Crockett and Ned Kelly in Australia
As my battered specimen has the name Ned Kelly and needs a replacement loco body.
I doubt I will find one with Ned Kelly as the name.
My caboose is also very battered and if the prices for them was not silly I would have replaced it with a good one long ago.
Do you know if a US loco crew was ever made for them??
Edward Kelly was a bush ranger ( highway man) that for one reason or other became an Australian Icon and a bit of a folk hero so it is no surprise that name would appear on an Australian version of the locomotive.

Good morning John thanks for taking the time to watch the video and the information, it's terrific to hear you have one of these great model locomotives with the alternative name. These models are quite expensive in themselves now and individual replacement parts even more so. I'm not sure if a specific crew was made to go with this model. I know it was marketed with crew in the catalogue. I do have one with crew fitted but it is the standard Triang Railways locomotive crew.
      Take care.

Good morning Oscar. 1962, I was seven years old. I do remember seeing this model as a child but allas never owned one. At that time most children were into cowboys and Indian shows, such as. Casey Jones, the lone Ranger, and of course Davy Crockett. Many thanks for another look into the past.

Good morning Terry glad you enjoyed the video. This locomotive and coaches must have looked terrific in the toy shop window in these colours, especially with the popularity of the shows you mention. A very tempting model, but perhaps not built for playtime!

Hi Oscar, I received the Davey Crocket in 1963 for Christmas. I was 4 years old then and it still runs and smokes beautifully. The here in Australia the model came with crew and a guard. I don't remeber the Ned Kelly stickers. Unfortunately the boxes went a long time ago. Great information in videos, regards.

Despite being a jinty chassis, it seems to look and run very smoothly and purposely. Great video Oscar, I was thinking you had ran out of new models to demonstrate, but as always you've turned up trumps with this one. My usual Sunday morning breakfast viewing will also be my Sunday lunch repeat viewing. (Girl friend has learnt when to shut up lol.... "Gary's watching his train porn again!" )

Hello Oscar, I've never seen one of these myself but what an excellent locomotive. A bit of the wild west on your layout, great fun. A smoke unit in the Caboose would have been good to see too, shame it didn't happen. I bet you enjoyed running these and filming this video. Best regards to you

Good morning Mr Snooze a smoke unit in the caboose really would’ve been something! Definitely a big smile on the face when running these models! Just need a bit of Ennio Morricone in the background and the sound of hooves on earth!

This train is so amazing that I was fortunate enough to get one because I always wanted to own a Wild West-themed train for my collection. It's also significant of my passion for the Wild West. Some day, I hope to obtain a fold-away table/base board and create a Wild West-themed 00/HO Gauge layout which I would christen 'Rattlersnake Gulch' complete with cowboys, Old West buildings and stagecoach. What do you think?

Hi Oscar, another great video- the set would be absolutely perfect for a great game of cowboys and indians on the living room carpet using the many figures available at the time....the Timpo ones were my favourite as you could swap the heads and hats!! The cow catcher would be great to plough through obstructions placed on the line, with the battle accompanied by the sounds and smells of a Lone Star cap gun firing repeatedly!!!
I just don’t think iPads are as much fun as we had!!!

    Hi Oscar,
Interesting look at what Triang thought might capture a younger market and as you say quite a fragile thing so fraught with danger there. Cowboys and Indians on the carpet is just the job.
Last week I bought an R23a ‘train set’ at a local auction. The box has had a hard life and the contents were very grubby however a wash and brush up plus service has revealed everything almost unmarked.
R50 Princess Royal with Magnahesion and smoke also R30/31 Tender.
Two Sleeping Cars 2510 no R number.
One full parcels coach 80531, again no R number.
The Sleepers dismantle into slotted side sections and individual glazing strips, would this be normal for this time.
I would be grateful for any idea of the original contents as there might be something missing, maybe just a controller.
    Thanks in advance,
    Gordon

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Gordon, great to hear you got your self the RS.22 set the contents you describe sound right. The Set was introduced in 1962 with an R.258 "Princess Royal" loco and R.34 tender, 2 x R339 sleeping cars and 1 x R425 full parcels brake. 8 double curves and 4 straights track being Super 4. The locomotive has probably just got R50 as its number on the moulding and the Tender R30/31 as you've indicated. Those numbers were for the black Princess R50 & R30 tender/the green Princess was R53 & tender R31. They used the same mouldings for The maroon Princess Royle and tender when she came along in 1959 I'm not sure if/when the numbers R.258/R34 ever got added to the respective mouldings. Im also not sure if the set ever hat a controller, many didn't then not even a battery one. The coaches sound right the all seem to share the same chassis with different slot insides to make different coaches with glazing strips glued on.
Thanks for watching hope this was of some help.

Hi Oscar. I was given one of these fine locos a few years ago and was amazed at how bright and different it looks from the rest of the Triang range. It is boxed and has smoke but the inside packaging from the 1962 period consisted of yellow foam which has reduced to powder and unfortunately there was a piece broken off the top of the cab. The red plastic is more brittle I think. I have made replacement section for the cab with mount board painted black and glued with PVA and it looks fine when it is running, which is what it was made to do. A very fun loco.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi great to hear you have one of these and that you’ve patched it up into good running condition. That foam they used to use for packaging really does disintegrate badly and sometimes sticks to the plastics of the model which can cause damage. I think the same foam was used inside some of the tenders to deaden the sound a little and you just end up with fine dust leaking from the tender!
      Thanks for watching.

An early favourite of mine from the edition 8 catalogue, so thanks for covering.
Smoking cars for the Coaches have different connotations these days. Thankfully for everyone's health the need for, or use of, the old smoking carriages seems to be disappearing.
Never seen the Ned Kelly version in Australia, so might be short lived and rare or just that the cost cutting of using paper nameplates that did not stand up to use well.
The real Ned Kelly is still a controversial figure. Even a day or two after this was posted, the Ned Kelly issue was being discussed by Victorian Police in the media as a Police murderer.
So likely to have contributed to the short period of use on the model in Australia at 0:50. Only one year in the local production leaflet I understand.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good morning John, yes it seems an odd thing smoking on trains. I can still remember smoking was allowed on the London Underground! and on buses. It seems almost unthinkable now. Pat Hammonds book just indicates that Moldex wanted the model but they preferred the name Ned Kelly and that transfers were made up and possibly applied by the dealer or supplied with a model so they could be fitted later by the end user. He also indicates that the model was sent out in parts for assembly by Moldex. As you say maybe the cost of producing the nameplates became prohibitive and as the parts are already perhaps painted it never got done either by Moldex, the dealer or the buying public. It really is fascinating reading the snippets of information and piecing things together.
      Thanks again.

    Hi Oscar,
Very many thanks for your reply and background notes, hugely increased my enjoyment of the RS.22.
It looks like this might be a variant of the set or the original owner made some additions or both. The track, which needs a serious clean, consists of:-
    6 R483
    4 R484
    4 R480
    4 R481
    1 R490 boxed with an additional R481
    1 R48 power clip
Oil bottle - instruction and info manual - plant label type tab “remove before operating “.
There was a bit of competition but, including commission, I paid £68 which, considering the condition after some TLC, I thought was quite good.
Again, thanks for taking the time to help out with this, very much appreciated.

Interesting rarity. This loco was never listed as having a working headlight.
Do you think someone has fitted a white LED after these became available around the late eighties or so.
Triang had no LEDs of course and the small lightbulbs they used on other models would be too hot and melt the lamp surrounds. Even the dock shunter had shielding for the lamp to protect the bodywork despite not being enclosed.

@@johnd8892 It's definitely not standard, as the voltage drops the light dims so I think it's possibly a bulb. The housing is custom made and not the normal red. Somebody in its past has tinkered with it and made a very good job of it. All I'm going to do is replace the damaged cow catcher and leave it at that.
I have since picked up another that only has the smoke which I intend to make into a Santa Express for our Christmas village. I'll use a LED for the light just need to suss out how to slow the motor while still giving full volts to the smoke unit.

Hi Oscar, one of my favourite old timers. It's a wonder Hornby haven't done a retro run on this set. I believe it would sell quite well. Could even make the headlight function, dim lights in the carriages etc. Thanks for the history on these great models/toys, it's nice to know the thinking behind the production. Steven.

Hi Steven glad you enjoyed the video I think you’re right a re-run of this model with a glowing headlamp and some new technology would be terrific product form Hornby.
      Thanks again for watching.

Always wanted one but haven’t got one to this day. I think it was just before my time , my first trainset was in 1965 when this model was ending its run . I was aware of it though from the 65 catalogue and the fact it appeared in the track plans book that my father must have bought to figure out a layout for me . As well as all the Westerns on the telly at that time there was also a program called Casey Jones which featured the Cannonball Express . It was a 4-4-0 but it had that huge chimney and cow catcher that the Triang Model has and the Triang model looked the part , but it was not to be . Instead my Jinty and two Pullman’s was my Cannonball Express! Great video as always Oscar

Good morning Russell your Cannonball express sounds terrific. I had forgotten about those little black and white images of locomotives and rolling stock next to the layouts in the track plans book thanks for reminding me.
      Stay safe.

Fun colourful models with lots of character. Not sure about the Ned Kelly thing (I could be wrong) but there was a TV series in 1957-58 called Casey Jones and staring Alan Hale. I think it probably ran in 59-60 in Australia. It was great fun and it looks like Triang traded off the popularity of the show around the world. There is an episode on TH-cam. Cheers

Hi Pauline Glad you enjoyed seeing this very colourful locomotive and rolling stock in action. I remember Casey Jones it was on kids TV here in the UK in the early 70s as I remember it. The Ned Kelly thing I only mention as Pat Hammonds book points out that the Australian company Moldex wasn’t happy with the name Davy Crockett for the model. So Ned Kelly transfers are believed to have been made up for application by retailers or the buying public, as I think the locomotive was supplied in finished parts from the UK for assembly in Australia to get around certain tax/ importation rules.
      Thanks again.

Well, there you go, it was called Ned Kelly! Sort of funny because it doesn't look like an Australian locomotive at all. Doesn't detract from their appeal though 😊

I had that caboose(brakevan)! 😮 it had no wheels so yes Oscar wouldn’t really last play time! 🤣 what a great train set! Thanks for the elaines trains plug it looks good. I reckon it’s had a drop the damage to plow, light and cab suggest this. Another great video 😁👍😎👊

Ps I noticed it looked like it was dark stained on the boiler interior. Do you think it was the smoke unit? Possibly a diy smoke unit? I know I attempted adaptations like that on my poor trains.

Good morning Ant, I think you may be right it may of had a smoke unit at some point it’s definitely been in the wars a little this model over its lifetimes.

I sometimes wonder if the Toy Story Loco casting is derived from the Davey Crockett with a modern chassis

Hi you’re right it does look very similar but I’m unsure if it was the one used. A little more research may be needed. Thanks for watching.
