- Thanks to Carl for donating some unused locomotives - time to get them out of the box and see what we have.
Tri-ang Hornby R644 BR Blue Class 81 and three coaches.
Hornby R.163 Ford 0-4-0 Loco 1984/1985
Hornby R.354 Dean Single ‘Lord of the Isles’ ; No 14010 is ex-Caledonian, probably
and two little 0-4-0 tanks that I can’t identify
Class 81 running simply does not look right without the overhead. I know, i have the same problem with my EM2s, just have to pretend.
I can lift the pantograph but it looks very odd with it up and no OLE.
Triang used to sell a gantary system back in the early 70s but it didnt last long, I have the catalogue which both it and CKD coaches available
I'm told it's not difficult to rig OLE for this kind of thing, but then it gets in the way when you're using other stock, and I'd need either to put it everywhere, or shunt it in neutral in the yard. I'm only playing trains. It'll do for now.
Love the Class 81 and coaches!
After further research, the Single is in fact the Caledonian Single, No. 123, which wore the number 14010 in its early days with the LMS, about a hundred years ago. The model is in LMS livery of that time. It's clearly not a Dean Single (wrong wheel arch profile) but the chassis code threw me. When I say "research", I basically looked up the Caledonian Single and its impressive life on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caledonian_Railway_Single
Is it proud mica on the commutator?2:33
The whole thing is filthy. I need to take it apart and service it.
Like the old Hornby basic but had character.
I honestly love the way they work and the sound is amazing. Nothing like the original AL1 but it sounds like it's putting some effort in and enjoying itself. :)
The two delightful little shunters are Rivarossi, and they're sturdy little chaps. The couplings are appropriate to RR's USA-styled locos and in fact a modern version of the No.98 shunter is still in their current catalogue, albeit they are now owned by Hornby. I intend to open one of them up to give it a thorough clean, and consider my options. Perhaps this is the ideal chassis to do something 3D-printed...
