Good tip on how to identify what steering rack you have - I've just had a peek under my car, and it supposedly has a CAM rack :) Also, nice cameo from the HubNut family ^^
I always love how you show any job that needs doing on my cars in the near future :D great to know that there are differences before running in the same problems :p
Great to have the spanner wrenching back. Really informative video, also little mentioned in the comments, is the nice camera work and editing. All good stuff.
Sledge, I had to fit new track rod ends on my XC90 for the MoT (it only failed on one). Don't forget to get the front wheel alignment checked. You could do with a cordless impact wrench. They're make short work of jobs like these.
I had the same thing wrong with my 745t but with probably 10 times the play yours had. I could hear it clunking when I hit a bump. I replaced both inner and outer tierods to ensure everything was tight. Not a very difficult job but that's mostly due to Volvo making things simple to maintain. Gotta love it when getting sent the wrong parts while your car is sitting on jack stands disassembled. I tightened my inner tie rods with a pipe wrench. I feel bad for the next person who has to remove them cause I made sure they wouldn't back out, lol. Great video as always.
For the next tie rod change. Tape a laser pointer on the brake disc and put a piece of tape on the wheel well and make a mark with pen. After changing the parts you'll get the wheel aligment where it was. This is how I do it. 😁
Just done the same job on my v70 but i used a pair of stilsons to remove and replace the tie rod and a dab of thread lock onto the tie rod just to be sure the off to four wheel tracking at the local tyre shop
Just when I am in need of replacing steering and suspension components myself, a video on the subject pops up. Excellent video as always, keep up the good work! My 740 had the right spindle replaced at a shop in January, but ever since then it has been making a knocking sound when going over bumps and making thumping sounds when turning. Upon inspecting it I found it is a completely different strut assembly, and thus most likely my old (working) parts were not moved over when it was replaced. The different strut assembly will be a fail on the upcoming inspection, so it needs to be fixed soon. Going to get the proper strut assembly and do a full rebuild on the front suspension to get everything nice and fresh again.
Good luck trying to get your other half to use a manual. On the other hand, my wife refuse to drive an Auto! Anyway, great work Sledge and the removal of the rook rack makes the car so different!
Going to give my 1996 940 lpt some TLC in the next month. Have a slight weep from the water pump top seal. Will just fit a new SKF water pump with genuine Volvo gaskets as waterpump a cheapie brand fitted 6 years ago. Also needs a new over axle exhaust pipe. Alternator belt needs re-tensioning after new belts and cambelt/tensioner last year. Nice to be able to work on these old Volvo's.
I've got a slight play in my steering also and since yesterday I now have a slight rattle when turning, guess its time to go under the car and check the steering rack. Your videos are very helpful
Great video! Thank you. Possible suggestion. As someone who searches TH-cam videos before I attempt a repair, I wonder if being more specific in the title would help future would be mechanics find your video
I noticed you got hankooks on your wheels. What do you think of them? I dont know if its the tyres but since i put hankooks on my volvo 245 last year i have balanced my wheels twice
Tbh these tyres are getting old now and I didn't drive on them when new so I couldn't say for sure, not had any issues with them, but I do drive the car like an old person
The 740 definitely seems a lot more refined, considering they made them side by side for so long they definitely feel 20 years apart sometimes! But it is cheaper in some ways as you'd expect with a newer car. I can't choose between them that's why I have to keep both at all costs 😄

Thanks man, glad it helped 🙂
Sledge you little Casanova, you have made two ladies very happy. Great job.
Cheers 🙂
You need to replace the anti-roll bar drop link as well as the rubbers are shot 🙂
No women watching Involvo'd. that's crazy, everyone likes old volvo cars. Good video
Thanks 👍
yeah good luck explaining timing gear to your girlfriend.

Nice, smooth sailin now! My WD40 technique would not go over well in Germany lol
😂😂😂
Thanks
Oh wow thank you!! Really appreciated 👍🙏 Will get some anti roll bar bushes ordered 😉😄
Nice to see a bit of mechanical work and use of the workshop! Even better that Miss Involvo'd can feel the difference.
Love this video's. Especially so satisfying when a repair is done and feel the difference. We are a strange breed to love older Volvo's 😊

You can remove the tie rod without taking the ball joint out. The joint on the rack side pivots.
The joys of finding correct parts fir the old cars. 🙈 well done and must admit myself Scandix has good customer service. 👍
nice one! always satisfying to complete a job and be able to feel the difference on the road afterwards.
Good to see you rolling around in the dirt again. It will surely help to keep you supple and athletic.

Thanks! Haha, yeah they are a bit weird I'm definitely keeping a feel out for any play re-developing 🥴
Wow. Thanks for showing. This is something I possibly have to do on my 940 soon, even though the TÜV did not mention it.
That's interesting because in the UK it doesn't fail the MOT either (last I heard about 10 years ago)
@@Involvod Depends on how much play you have at the steering wheel. Used to be about 25mm of play at steering wheel I think.

It does seem odd that there are no flats on that balljoint. It is certainly not something you would want to come loose!
love that color w/ the blue interior

how do you manage to keep it LPT?
I don't know a single person who still has the stock 135 hp.
Nice, hope it goes well. I was also recommended to use a genuine Volvo top seal as it's such a common point to leak as you probably know
Great job! Isn't there the same issue at the other side?
The other side is still tight but the rack is leaking a bit so I need to try some stop leak. Definitely a good policy to replace both sides though
Cracking video as always matey! Not looking forward to tsckling this myself 😂

Hey man, any chance you know where I can find an m47 front driveshaft for a 740?
I'm not sure, but here in Germany I use eBay Kleinanzeigan for used Volvo parts
i have a question, will you buy a volvo 300 in the future or a 400 ?
I'm not sure, they aren't my favourite but I'd be tempted by a redblock powered 360 if the price was right 🙂

How would you compare the 240 to the 740? Is the 740 a considerable improvement over the 240, or have certain things been cheapened?
