    Wow! I grew up on carbs but haven't messed with one since the 70's! I know you will get her sorted. Meanwhile, I think I mentioned that my 92 240 with 44K miles had crapped on me. Well, I did my research yesterday and found (with a bore-scope) that the head gasket has blown apart between cyld. 1 and 2! I now have a 2 cylinder! The amazing thing is I drove it about 2 miles home when it happened! Owned six Volvo's and 2 Delorean's and I've never seen anything like this. Ordering parts tomorrow...

    Bit of a mish-mash conversion there. Had this done by a Volvo mechanic about 20 years ago. The original air feed from the filter box fitted the Weber perfectly. Then again it was a new carb plumbed for a 740. That water leak looks like it's from the heater matrix. Replacements are still available. End product is better than the original Pierburg.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  ปีที่แล้ว

      Funnily enough I recently tried 2 different air hoses and they don't seem to fit well on the carb at all, maybe because they're old and a new one might be better. And thanks, I thought it might have been the heater matrix as it looked like the fluid inside had some colour to it

    Good work ! I had a 740 estate that was being filled with water in the driver foot week every rainy day. The leak usually comes from the footwell vent gasket. Just replace it with silicone sealant. You can confirm this by pouring water in the windscreen lower driver corner.
    Good luck and thanks for your videos !

    My ‘86 740 GLE leaked into the passenger footwell, so may mechanics looked at it and they could never completely fix it, it only leaked in really heavy rain. One mechanic said it had been in an accident front left years prior to me owning it. It was so comfortable and reliable for years but with the leak and the electrics starting to play up, I went through so may fuses and light bulbs I ended up ditching her. Her name was Vera 😂 then onto a ‘98 S90, absolutely beautiful but terrible fuel economy in the city.

    Just so you know: e85 burns so clean that plugs and pistons stay clean as well. It's very hard to diagnose a fuel problem on a e85 engine ( same goes for LPG) Even if the engine was over fueled.
    For an e85 conversion you need 45% higher fuel flow with the same airmass. That's why the previous owner probably drilled out those jets. I actually tried e85 on a 940lpt: 300-something cc/min injectors stock and i stappen them for 440cc/min injectors.
    With 15psi boost that thing ran like a scalded cat! Great fuel for turbo engines.
    Biggest downside of e85 fuel was very poor cold start behaviour. And higher fuel mileage.

    • @Involvod
      @Involvod  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great info, thanks! This car never ran on E85 fortunately, just the carb on another car

  • @mayflowerlash11
    @mayflowerlash11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With the weber, the unexpected head type and the non standard starter that is probably a rare 740.
    Plus it is in good condition.
    Re water in the foot well. My 940 used to flood after rain, so I dismantled the scuttle, cleaned out the organics and completely sealed the edge of the grill over the inlet. Thought I'd solved it as it didn't flood any more. Until it rained the other day. Water under the carpet. So more digging required.
    On a related note. Does anybody else think it's strange that so many of those plastic footwell mats survive. I know the Swedes invented them to contain snow and mud from their boots. But every second Volvo has a complete set, even in Australia where we don't get much snow. I think many owners like the feel of them and the lack of need to keep carpet clean.
    Anyway Happy New Year and good luck with that beautiful blue 740.

    • @Gothamauto
      @Gothamauto ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many earlier model years had full rubber mats, such as the 120 and 140 series. Those were easy to clean with broom and dustpan.
      The heavy individual mats in later models wear like iron, and actually trap dirt until it can be vacuumed out. Such a good idea that it seems to have inspired the aftermarket offerings from WeatherTech, Husky etc.

  • @shepshepherd
    @shepshepherd ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I reckon that a thorough service, new ignition consumables and some super unleaded will work wonders :)
    Also, although it probably isn't the source of the water in the footwell, I'd get some gaffa tape over the factory-fitted hole in the top of the bulkhead in lieu of the correct grommet, as if water's going to get in anywhere, Sod's Law says it will get in there...

    That Weber has a much better design than the Zenith in my Amazon. Have been looking into doing a Weber conversion my self, but the carburettors I have found for sale so far are drastically different. Would need to either make a custom manifold or some sort of adapter plate. Throttle linkage and fuel supply would need to be modified as well. Looks like you still have the stock manifold, making your carburettor more or less bolt on? I'm sure you can get it running properly soon enough. Replace ignition components, set the points gap and timing to get a good baseline. Remember to do carburettor adjustments with the engine at normal operating temperature.

    Love your channel as I am a 245 owner in Holland. My work often takes me to Germany and two types of cars are rather absent on the roads there: old Volvos and Teslas. I'm curious how you keep finding them there. I actually came back home today from a couple of days of work in Berlin, and the only Volvo 245 I saw on the entire trip was parked under a viaduct somewhere in the Zehlendorf area. It was a white 245, and if I saw it correctly in the second or two I could see it, it was on Polish license plates. Other than that, I only saw two or three 700 or 900 series on the Autobahn journey (mostly A2) and no self propelled Teslas (lots on trailers, tough).

    Thanks for Your video, I've been over a Year trying to get My 86 740 carb sorted. I think I must have made every mistake possible including just not having enough petrol in the tank Duh
    The original piburg died due to e10 fuel cleaning all the rust and junk in the tank into the carb, so I tried a Chinese weber 38-38 DGSA to no avail, then Chinese 48IDF still no luck.I've even replaced the in tank fuel pump. I'm currently attempting to install 4 42mm PWK keihn bike carbs! I will let You know how it goes...if at all
    PS I find My Gunson Colourtune spark plug a great way to tune with Best Wishes Jahmahrah

    Hi, i got a question about something totally unrelated to this video. Have u ever replaced a head gasket without running the head in a milling machine? Thought I'd ask since i guess you've done a few head gasket replacement in your days.
    I got an '87 740 gle with a b230e.

      Hey, no I had each one skimmed, I have checked them first with a straight edge and feeler gauge to make sure they needed a skim. If they aren't too warped you can clean them up yourself and put them back on. If it didn't overheat it might be okay to re use after a clean.

    Thats why you put on safety glasses haha...Typical volvo always full of water in footwells comes in from dodgy screen and door rubbers.Those webers may have been ok on new engine but shit to get working right after thousands of miles. Even after going through electrics and timing I think you going to have to live with a slight miss or spends hours friutlessly searching for an answer.
