Some folks watching here may come across another variant of the 'hard drive not detected' issue not covered in this video: Most laptops nowadays use M.2 drives, I came here looking for tips to solve why my HP 255 refused to recognise any of the ones I tried. Turned out my handy 'sneaker-net' device, a USB type C external drive carried the solution. Inside was a M.2 SATA drive of 128 Gb. All the ones I'd tried were NVME type. Extracting and swapping in the 128 Gb M.2 SATA drive, got recognised straight away. HP Diagnostic confirmed the drive as 'good'. All I'm left to do now is pick a Linux distro to suit the machine, now restored to 'workable' Nice video, thanks PC Monkey. I offer you and community my tip for free.
Hey, Jamin. I appreciate how you troubleshoot for the smallest problems that may be causing one's computer to malfunction before moving on to the more difficult ones (ruling out/or the process of elimination). Excellent strategy, indeed. Thanks!
Wow! Thank you so much for this lecture. My laptop was showing hard drive not installed. I was able to reseat my hard drive and it solved the issue. Thank you once again.

Hey Please help me Mine HP laptop fell a week ago and now today its not opening..Black screen.. After long struggle i was Able to open diagnostic test. It is able to identify my model TOSHIBA hard drive but Results showing Short DST failed with 24 digit failure Id. My issue is- 1- I wanted to recover my Data as its extremely important. What are the ways for it? 2- if i buy an ssd and boot it with new windows things will go fine?
If the diagnostic scan shows the HDD to not be installed, it could mean its either loose or bad. Try 'Reseating' the HDD first as seen here in this video. Try the diagnostic test again. If it fails to change the scan, I would then replace the HDD. You can see some HDD and SSD ideas in the Computer Component list here: www.amazon.com/shop/pcmonkey.

Great video. especially like the subtitles as I am hard of hearing. I have an issue and been unable to find anything, even on HP's FAQ. I have an HP 8470 Laptop on a 2012 Dock/ It has an expansion slot for a SATA drive. I bought the carrier and a Timetec SSD, but the CPU doesn't see it on Device Manager or in the BIOS. Any suggestions? Thanks
Hi, thanks for this resource. When I turn my laptop on, it says the message is boot device not found, install an operating system on your hard disk (3FO), and shows a link to more information. So I began a quick check for the hard drive and the message is no hard drive installed, check that the power and data cables are connected properly. I went to your FAQs and only one pops up that isn’t helpful to my situation. Any input? If I have to get a new hard drive, do you have a tutorial about installing one? (I’m not computer savvy, btw.)

If your old HDD is still good and the DATA on it is still good then yes, it can be transfered to another HDD. If the old HDD is bad and the DATA on it is now bad then no, most likely the DATA is gone.
Did a factory reset on my hp because I had intended to sell it, after the reset and when it was updating, my network went out and I can't install a new os, ran diagnostics and hdd is fine but trying to install the os it's not finding the hdd. Os is number on in bios boot ord. What can I do?
My HP All in one crashed Monday with both the 3F0 and 3f1 HD not found and boot error messaging. The PC was in use when it failed. The Diagnostics tool tells me HD is not found. I loaded a Windows install file into my USB to test that option and Windows cannot be reloaded and the repair tool cannot be used. The 1 time I was able to open the BIOS, the boot order did not include the local hard drive at all, only my external Seagate. Is my only option to OPEN the all in 1 to check for seating/loose cables? Thanks
Yes, I would try to 'reseat' the HDD first. Unplug it, plug it back in to make sure its not just loose. If it still cannot be seen by the diagnostic test, its most likely bad and should be replaced.
Thank you for sharing, I have done the diagnostic the result is No hard drive installed. Please check that the power and data cables are connected properly. What shall I do with this? Please help Thank you so much

Just want to add I did work your steps. Initial problem No hard drive found. I did drop the laptop last week it continued to work. I discovered this problem a couple days ago. Not sure if this was the first logon sine I dropped it. I did the diaonostic tests F2 and got hard drive not installed. I reset the ssd by pulling it out and then reinserting it. I tried changing boot to legacy-no change. Now I'm using a new hard drive. It has Windows, Program files, Program files (86), Perflog, and Users on it.

👋🏾, I’m new to your channel and I had a “No Boot” error message show after my HP Pavilion Gaming - 17t-Cd0000 CTO had a black screen. I was told by HP I needed a Recovery Media USB to reboot the operating system. Once I followed the instructions using the Recovery Media USB an different error message showed up “No HDD”. HEY, thank you so much for your video, my hard drive passed the test but still my bios can't detect it for some reason . when I try to install the new windows 10 pro gave me message no drive to install and by watching some other video show that I have to download drivers which I did but still window can't find the hard drive , went back to bios and I played with the options like enable and disable the legacy and boot system but still no luck , what do you think could be the issue ?!
Hey man, thanks for the videos. I love them, super helpful but I am having issues with my hardrive I tried taking it out and fixing it again, the I also tried installing windows from an install media that I made with guidance from your video but during the instal start up where I have to select the partitions, on unallocated space of 3.9GB shows up and tells me that I can't install windows on such a small disk. So what do I do now?
Hello! I already checked mine and it didn't detect my hard drive. Got it checked from a technician and he said the issue comes from the SSD itself. He does not repair hardware though and only does replacements so he suggested we visit another tech. 1. Can SSD be repaired? If no, this will save me the trouble of going to another tech. 2. Can I retrieve my files from the "broken" SSD? 3. What SSD should I buy, just in case, for my Victus 15-FA00? It had 512GB NVME. Thank you.

My old roommates hp laptop just had this happen overnight, and it's only 3 years old. It has an SSD which I already tried reseating. I noticed that it didn't spring up when I removed the retaining screw, could this be related to the issue? I figured it would have lasted longer than just 3 years, especially since it has an SSD in it.

The funny thing is...if the HDD doesn't show up, how can we make sure it's okay? The title of this video clearly points to the situation of an undetected disk, therefore it is as if it "does not exist" even though we know that it is inside the PC. In my case it is an internal disk, a 500GB HDD. I can't see it even using the cmd. This leads me to the fact that I will have to open it, which I would not want to do, to see how I can disconnect it and reconnect it. It is a great annoyance and fear for me to do that, because I am not a computer specialist although I can do some things, but I have had such a bad time with my previous computer that this one (I don't understand) starts giving me headaches with a hard drive It doesn't show up, and the rest of the PC works great, except for this weird disappearance. I investigate to see if there is a virus, something that could be partly to blame but I can neither confirm nor deny. I want to fix this soon to continue with my busy life. Thanks for the video.
@@PC_Monkey Hello, thanks for answering. My PC is an HP Elite 8300 desktop (Intel Core i7-3770, 16GB of RAM, 240GB SSD + 500GB HDD, DVD player, 2GB graphics card, PCI WiFi, Windows 10 Pro ES 64... But the 500GB HDD disk does not appear. Not with CMD or anything, I just don't feel safe opening the PC and checking it because it's under warranty and I don't want to mess anything up, but if I had to (for example) add more RAM I would inevitably have to open it, but I've been a lot time suffering with another computer that I have there waiting to be repaired later. I did a hard drive check and it gave me PASS as a result, but immediately I got out of that menu both my monitors went white and I had to forcefully press the button to turn off (which I don't like to do that). Thank you
@@mylittlestationchannel Yes, if a computer is under warranty, its possible that opening it may void that warranty. Would be safe to send it in for repair. DIY is great buy Warranty is better :)
@@PC_Monkey Thank you, I know the benefit of the warranty but this is a refurbished PC, and it turns out that I tried to open the PC and it can't be opened. The lid seems glued on, it's absurd, any PC should be able to open when you buy it. If I wanted to put more RAM memory I couldn't. Or if I had bought a better drive and wanted to insert it...I couldn't. Now what I would like is to know how I can see that missing disk in the BIOS... The BIOS interface varies on each computer. I don't know if my BIOS needs to be updated. I don't usually touch that area of the PC because it's something so delicate, but I know more or less what I can do and the limits. Thank you.
@@mylittlestationchannel Yes, you can try to reload BIOS or reset it. However, because if the high risk of 'bricking' a computer by not working with BIOS correctly, I dont advise DIY'ers to mess with it as much as they can help it.

Hello, excellent👌👌 But I don't have access to BIOS (I forgot the password). The only solution provided by the HP support department is to replace the motherboard😰😰. There are ways to reset the BIOS password on some motherboards but due to security issues and the fact that its an operation that if done wrong, can permanently destroy the motherboard, I dont advise on it here :( Sry

I did that reseating the hard drive, done that couple of times but it still says that. I did the boot setup, the videos I have seen is all the same mine is only different. In the bios setup, there is the main, security configuration, boot options and exit. The legacy support you mentioned, I cannot find it. The UEFI thing is there but when I tried to see if there's under it, there's none. This is making me frustrated and classes are almost back I needed this so much. I would be most grateful if there is a chnace that we can fix this, thank you so much in advance.
If the test shows the HDD to not be installed but you have tried reseating it, then either the HDD is now bad or the motherboard is bad.

Hey i remove the nvme m2 ssd in my laptop, reinsert it and it works fine. But after few days same thing happens again. I can’t reinsert it everytime. Can u please help.
Hard drive check says no ssd/hdd everytime in the bios diagnostics
@@faicsal8081 The port could be loose or the ssd could be damaged :(
Have an hp 15 dw 0083wm, just replaced the ssd 2 days ago (the last one went bad) after about a day I'm getting Boot Device Not found.
Yesterday I went to system diagnostics and ran a harddrive check it says No Hard Drive Installed. Reseated the hardrive and it was fine.
Now I'm having the same problem again. Boot device not found, ran diagnostics, no hard drive installed. It can't be a faulty ssd I just bought it brand new the other day and sometimes it'll turn on and run just fine (even passing the hardrive check sometimes).
If you keep having to reseat it then yes, it can be a faulty drive or perhaps a faulty drive port on the board :(
Hello, excellent👌👌
But I don't have access to BIOS (I forgot the password). The only solution provided by the HP support department is to replace the motherboard😰😰. After two hours of searching on the internet, no results were obtained. Do you have any suggestions for resetting the BIOS? Thanks🙏🙏 (HP Zbook G6 15 - win 11 24h2)
There are ways to reset the BIOS password on some motherboards but due to security issues and the fact that its an operation that if done wrong, can permanently destroy the motherboard, I dont advise on it here :( Sry
Hi, I was watching Netflix and then my computer started glitching and I couldn’t do anything. I turned it off and then I turned it back on about 30 minutes later, I keep trying to do your steps and nothing seems to be working. I don’t know how to open my computer up tbh, I’m 17 and just trying to do my school work
1. Is your HP computer giving you a 'No HDD' error when you try to start it?
2. You were unable to access the diagnostic scan?
Hello, mine is HP Laptop model 14s-fq0xxx. I spilled water on the keyboard and immediately wipe it down and dried it as much as possible. When that happened I turned it off and when I turned it back on to see if it's alright, there is this image that says:
boot device not found
Please install an operating system on your hard disk
Hard Disk - (3F0)
F2 - system diagnostics
And I tried to go to diagnostics there are 8 options including exit its Processor, memory test, storage test, hard drive check, power test, system board test and language. I tried the hard drive check and did the quick check it immediately says "no hard drive installed. Please check that the power and data cables are connected properly." Which is weird because I have been using this since my pa brought it for me. And when that accident happen, this happen. I have done the things that should be done but it still says that boot device thing not found.
My laptop is the type that you need to unscrew the whole bottom off.
Please I need help with this, I don't want to trouble my pa considering he just gave me this this year and I already damage it. I would be most grateful if there is a chnace that we can fix this, thank you so much in advance.
If the test shows the HDD to not be installed but you have tried reseating it, then either the HDD is now bad or the motherboard is bad. If this happened after a liquid spill, my guess would be the motherboard :(. You can try replacing each to see if that solves the issue but both could be bad. Would you like help with that or do you need help with any DATA recovery on the HDD?

Ok my PC not a laptop says no hard drive detected when I run the storage test. This happened after a power outage and I tried to restart it. It gave me a blue box that said hard disk error it gave me 3F1 code at first. Then a 3F0 after I tried to do a system reboot. I put a flashdrive with Windows 10 but it failed and says on the recovery manager info no hdd. What are my options?
That means your HDD may be loose or bad. Try 'Reseating' the HDD first as seen here in this video. Try the diagnostic test again.
