If love to see a film about an arranged marriage where the girl/young woman. While unhappy with it, accepts it and uses her station to exert power over others.
Power isn’t only about stabbing things with a sword or even being the top of the food chain. Sometimes it’s better to have the ear of those in power.

She was always killing innocent daughters! Even if they really were the offending king's descendants, they would still be innocent. They didn't kill her babies. This is so fucking stupid. They want you to sympathize with the dragon who had willingly been eating girls who had nothing to do with anything. It's not she like was tricked into being a murderer, she just ate the wrong kind of innocent people. You know you can be like, "Yeah, it's not right what happened to your kids, but you've become just as bad (if not worse) than the people who wronged you and you need to go." But instead, Princess Girlboss teams up with the dragon that had actively been terrorizing her and killed her dad, because she's kind and merciful!

Completely true. It's not just they wanted to 'girlboss,' they wanted to "subvert" and 'expose The Patriarchy!" All they did was actually expose their own corrupt morality. They're disgusting as people in charge of a movie. Imagine these people in charge of a country.
About the plot, I hold that it COULD have been a good story in the hands of a good author. In fact, I could think of so many ways this could have been written into a much better story. Here's one. How about when Elodie and the prince talk and get to know each other more, then prince truly grows to like her to the point he finds he can't let be sacrificed. In the short moments they had, they showed one of the reasons he was distant was because he didn't want to get involved with someone he knew he was going to help sacrifice. So how about this for a twist? After he throws her down, there's a pause where you see it from his perspective. She falls. He knows she's still alive and injured. The guilt starts to eat at him. The others try to affirm it's all proper and good, and that this is ONLY way. Then he turns to them, and simply says, "No." And then he quietly steps off the ledge to share whatever fate with Elodie.
Imagine a tale where Elodie has to overcome her own outrage and her own misgivings. Imagine a tale where in the end, both have to trust each other completely in order to escape. But no.
      Sigh.
I am so tired of this "subvert" crap.

You are correct. Even in small kingdoms, the royal family has servants and workers that tend to the castle and do menial tasks for the people, like gathering fire wood to sell off. • @MajorSmurf

@@Hollendaryy4064 Actually I was thinking about this. First off it would be far less suspicious if random peasant girls were being kidnapping from settlements all over the place instead of high ranking nobility that no-one ever sees again. Honestly a princesses going missing would cause so much hostile tensions between countries it's unreal to think about. Like once the kingdom providing the bride gets the money, what's stopping them from using it to build up an army in revenge for their daughter? There is no way dragon nation would back out of deal like that as no country would ever trade or deal with them. Rumours would spread like wild fire about how untrustworthy that kingdom is. A peasant going missing would be like a common enough occurrence. Nobility going missing is huge news and could cause all kinds of problems including things like civil war back home for the brides country. Secondly the marriage isn't even required. It's the blood from the prince or royalty that the dragon is smelling to let her know it's royalty. Thirdly why the fuck would the royal family of this dragon feeding nation even discuss the truth with the brides family, what happens if they say no? They would bring guards with them and killing them all would have all sorts of problems. Like you don't think a brother or sister of the king or queen of the brides nation is going to be suspicious when they don't come back? Also yes Elodie is from a poorer country so they needed the money but you're telling me there was never a just or noble father or mother who gave them the middle finger? Honestly you could poke so many holes in this films it's not even funny.

During the time he spent in the Netherlands where he sought asylum after WW I he was well known for giving the local poor people firewood he cut himself. So there is at least one...... 😂 very weird that the dragon flapping and moving around wasn't roarring or making loud wing beats and crushing dudes to show its fury...because then you could argue the king is being frozen with terror at the folly of his plans.
...oh and why wouldn't they send in ten knights, while the king has several men at the ready outside...the knights run in and we see the knights bait the dragon to chase them, killing some, or consuming them as it goes. Shoot make it so the dragon is a *Raid Boss* and it just is that dangerous to slay a dragon. The dragon gets hit with mortal weaponry, catapults, ballistas, spears and arrows, but the kings blade is special so the idea isn't to drop the dragon with the army, its to tire it and bring it to the ground for the king to get the killing blow.
But the king locks up after seeing the dragon, and it gets some time to recover and it whips its tail or something to take the sword away and throw it into its cave. And then. The King surrenders.

Gotta love how Elodie is willing to forgive the dragon, who has killed countless people, including the sacrificed girls (toying and torturing some of them to death). She doesn't know what the truth is, but just believes the dragon when she says it was unprovoked. She has no proof that's true. Even if the dragon was tricked, she was still demanding the sacrifice of innocent princesses who had nothing to do with the crimes of their royal ancestor. Would it have all been okay with Elodie if the dragon had actually been killing those innocent daughters of royal blood, as per the agreement? Is it just wrong that it was girls who weren't blood related, thus making the dragon the victim?
And then Elodie allows the dragon to kill the prince, who was clearly reluctant and apologized for what he did. He was obviously being coerced by his parents into something he didn't want to do. Much like how Elodie was pushed to agree to a marriage she didn't want thanks to her parents guilting her into it for the sake of their family and people. It would be easy to conclude the prince was also sacrificing her (against his will) to save his family and the people of his kingdom against the wrath of the dragon. Elodie has no idea what story the prince was fed and if he has the truth or not. He also didn't personally cause harm to the dragon or her babies, but her taking out centuries old grudge against him for the actions of his ancestors is fine? Elodie didn't even give him a chance at life and redemption. The only one who should have died was the queen and maybe the king (for all we know he married into the family against his wishes and is basically just a royal consort with no power).
And all the people (nobility to even servants in the palace) had no choice but follow the will of their monarchs. But they get burned and melted to death, too, for the crime of being powerless under their queen's will? Even if some survive, their kingdom has fallen, which will undoubtedly lead to much misery and many deaths, from the remaining nobility right down to the poorest of peasants. Neighbors will be turning on neighbors as social order collapses and it is every man for himself.
Because why would ANY of the people want to follow Elodie and her family? She's a bloody killer and psycho. Even if the people disliked the monarchy (which we have no evidence they did), Elodie is from a different kingdom with no connections there and she basically murdered the royalty she married in to. Although, did any of the citizens know she was married to the prince? Since even they would find it weird and rumors would easily spread if he's going through princess-wives like toilet paper. But Elodie has nothing about her that would make the people rally under her (unless she uses the dragon to demand loyalty, so rule out of fear). And if she murdered much of the nobility present at the wedding at the palace, then how is she going to manage or protect the kingdom from other kingdoms? Her shitshow little kingdom looks very different from the kingdom she's basically conquered.
And if Elodie is just going to skip off on her ship with her dragon, is she really just going to leave her step-mom and sister in charge? The former not even being an educated or adquately experienced royal (rather the daughter of a rope-maker with no previous training in politics, decorum, economics, diplomacy, etc) and the latter being a child-princess with even less experience or maturity. Neither of them could run a kingdom alone or together. They certainly don't have any allies within the kingdom for them to rely on. I can't see them surviving long before someone else rolls up to commit the next coup during Elodie's absence. Make their death's look like an accident and you've got yourself a new king and/or queen!
But at least a sadistic, man-eating dragon and Elodie got their revenge. Nobody wins!

Contrary to popular belief, medieval people tried to keep as clean as possible (yes, I know this is fantasy, but it's inspired by the middle ages). They weren't covered in dirt and grime for the most part, and male manual laborers would even strip down to the bare essentials when working fields to preserve their attire. People would also keep wash basins and barrels at the ready to wipe their faces and wash their hands.
I think these costumes feel out of place because the clothing doesn't look like it's been worn. It's too crisp. A way to fix this could be to just have the actors or anyone else wear the outfits around beforehand to break them in. Or tumble the costumes in the wash or something.

Ya know what annoys and amazes me... this same premise about a monster out for revenge was done with far more uniqueness and far more epic about 1000+ years ago. The tale of Beowulf which got an animated film with a actual twist on the original tale a few years back. For those who don't know the original tale. A monster is causing harm in a fiefdom or village so Beowulf and his team hear of this and go off to help to deal with the problem. The monster Grendel is defeated by Beowulf but not easily, in the poem it's described as no sword could pierce his skin. So it required Beowulf to actually rip and tear it's arm off. Grendel ran off and died in his home. As you can imagine Grendel's mother was furious and takes revenge by slaughtering the men she found while they slept in the great hall with Beowulf being away at the time. Beowulf comes back and with help tracks the mother down. Yet again another fight breaks out between the two and Beowulf wins again not without actual effort to do it. She almost killed him but in the end he wins.
Why is this version of the premise better? Well first off it doesn't paint the mother of Grendel as right for what she did unlike Damsel painting the dragon as just some poor victim. Yes her children being killed was possibly a wrong. I say possibly because they are fire breathing monsters and they likely do not share a human morality. Hell we are even shown that it doesn't with the dragon wanting a lifetimes supply of kings daughters delivered to her every generation. Who are innocent of any wrong doing at least towards the dragon. So the dragon has a very warped sense of justice/morality. Could you live with a dragon living close by that has shown how cruel it is? Knowing that it might just plunk you up one day? Or burn your entire kingdom down, killing thousands of innocents? Which is exactly what we're shown at the end of the film. Damsel is the only one on the bridge so everyone else burned to death even those she told to run... She also couldn't have informed an entire castle of the threat. Also curious why there are no alarm bells or anything in case the dragon does attack. But of course that would require writers to apply actual logic to their work.
Final fact even Tolkien did his own version of Beowulf. So yeah as you can see anyone claiming this premise is unique is well beyond moronic. When they say Hollywood and other writers are out of ideas, they're not wrong.

I hate how movies preach how awful arranged marriages are for women but never mention men. Do the movie makers think they want to get together with a stranger, especially when it's an irresponsible, stupid, psycho who is completely incapable of empathy? Even in better movies, it's a problem. Jasmine from Aladdin doesn't know about paying and pissed off a prince of another country by having her pet tiger bite him. My guess is that they focus on the fact that throughout history, most marriages would have been arranged by men (though probably not the groom-to-be). That gives them the impression that arranged marriages are something done by men to women, making them not just bad by default, but bad for the women.
Which might explain why Jasmine just casually commits an act of war. Disney's never really understood medieval geopolitics, but hey, at least Aladdin's not as bad as Frozen in that regard.

The dragon would have been a far more interesting character if:
1- she DID attack and carry off people and livestock, BUT she did it to feed her hatchlings. And have it so that the dragon’s morality doesn’t align with the morality of a human. What’s chaos to the fly is natural to the spider. And the reason that the dragon is just…stuck in a cave is because she’s been crippled by the king’s army. And the sacrifices aren’t to keep the kingdom safe, but it’s to prolong the dragon’s life and her suffering.
    Or
2- the dragon is actually one of the hatchlings that survived and witnessed her family’s deaths. She kills indiscriminately because she’s blinded by hate. The reason she’s in the cave is because she’s an adolescent and can’t fly yet, as dragons mature slowly. The dragon could be a cautionary tale about letting the pain of the past consume you (like fire and *magma* 😱) and/or a lesson about forgiving someone for your own good or something

Hollywood Writer: Let’s steal the plot from Dragonslayer, except add the tough-girl attitude from Joey King’s “The Princess!” And cast Millie Bobby Brown in it, so she can smirk and do her “Eleven stare” at the audience. Add a dash of woke and a dusting of “I don’t need no man!” Presto! It’s fit for “modern” audiences.

There are several common complaints about this movie, so I ask instead: What does the dragon eat?
A several ton dragon has to eat a lot, and if it at any point the local fauna or even worse the kingdom's cattle or horses were its victims, then the human attack couldn't possibly be unprovoked. I know perspective bias on the dragon's part comes into play in their lines, but it is also a central premise of the movie that the dragon is innocent. This movie seems to think a massive predator living and hunting in your vicinity isn't cause enough to remove it through force and cull any population growth. Humanity has exterminated entire species that were an existential threat to our lives, eg lions. We have also reduced populations of wolves when they threatened our food supply. It is nonsense to think a dragon living next door is a tenable situation.
"But the dragon was sentient! It could be reasoned with!" DID THEY KNOW THAT BEFOREHAND?! I don't recall a line in which the dragon talks to the kingdom _before_ the assault on its lair.
So a giant, potentially mindless monster resides in a local mountain and either hunts local fauna or steals livestock that could feed the kingdom. The king is a big bad for culling the children that would increase the predator's population and food requirements threefold. Also this problem doesn't just go away with the blood pact. You're telling me that for YEARS a dragon has been flying around and there has been no loss of life or livelihood such that another campaign to slay it was demanded? It took one completely untrained yet supernaturally competant girl to mortally wound it, a planned, concerted effort by the evil kingdom would've worked.

Why do we always need a pretentious female lead, why do they always have the same monologues of "Men cant do shit, women do it better."? Also, I assume that servants would be the ones chopping the wood not some skinny ass 90lbs princess. Also, girl suck it up, your role in this time period is to be a bargening chip. This movie could have been a unique fantasy/horror and had a little comedic element. Perhaps divided into 3 to 4 parts.
The first part obviously being how the young girl is being tailored into believing how she is going to become a princess and what not. She gets sacrifice by the royal family.
2nd part. She awakens in caverns surrounded by a group of demons/devils. Come to find out these beings are just living a regular family orientated life and are confused as to why every so many years human women keep falling into their homeworld. Now she wants revenge for being betrayed, but since she has never held a sword she gets training from the female devils. Develops a family bond. Gets a devil boyfriend. And then after some time has passed shes ready to kick some ass.
3rd part. Getting revenge on the kingdom
While some of this seems campy, im sure it would have been better than this movie.

I’ll tell you one thing, the idea of a movie based on the idea on how a coupling like the king and his wife even happened in the first place in, what is this trying to emulate, 14th century Europe? Like maybe she’s as a small child ended up there due to the Arab/Barbary slave trade, thus explaining her accent ending up as a household servant, and then her and the future king falling for each other and having to navigate eventually not only making the public and court, etc all somehow accept not only the clear foreigner marrying the king/future king, but also the fact that she’s more than a commoner (nobility/royalty marrying commoners/non-nobles/non-royals was an extremely big no-no), but moreover, a slave/servant in that time period.
