They don't just want to kill physical media; they want to kill the theatrical movie model as well. This was & always have been the goal of streaming services. This has been the mission of Netflix since it started the so-called streaming revolution way back in 2007. However, both attempts to kill these mediums aren't going as planned as the theatrical movie business is thriving & physical media is doing okay. Don't you agree?

@@erickvoshel1 Zach Carlson, author of 'Destroy All Movies' pointed that out in a doc called 'Rewind This' back in 2014. Netflix is responsible for the death of video stores and they are trying to take everything else movie related out too. Boycott Netflix and all the things we love and miss will come roaring back.

I use my phone. No internet. I live in Florida, and during Hurricanes, people lose power or internet or even cell services, but most of the time, the power gets restored quickly, but the internet and cell services were very spotty for days. I was completely fine entertaining myself with my collection while a lot of other people were complaining they couldn't watch TV or the internet or anything. The local thrift stores had a run on used players and old DVDs. Walmart was practically sold out of their $5.00 DVD's. Now, most people in and around hurricane hot spots are starting to keep at least one old player and a few DVDs just in case the internet goes out again or a hurricane comes again.

Beyond just better quality with physical media, having them to look over and choose from…you build a library of movies you may just forget about otherwise. So many movies I think of and want to watch it on streaming but just not right that moment…then I forget about it in the sea of scrolling. I love being able to grab my 4K and set it to the side for later and I love having friends over to scan like a video store and select something to watch. It’s just an experience all to it’s own that can’t be matched. Not with a hard drive or a streaming service.

1000000% that exactly! there is an emotional, nostalgic, tactile experience and pride of ownership and comradery and so much more that come with owning physical media and sharing it with people that no streaming or digital means will ever touch! those who understand that are the lucky ones and those who dont are missing out on so much and one day, they may be coming to us for help lol

I don't know what the deal is, but John Campea is so full it, and has been spreading negativity about physical media for a decade now. He claims he doesn't have a player to play discs, but guess what? He does have a PS5 with a disc drive in his own cinema - those are the facts and can be seen in one of his videos. By the way, we have so many great brands to choose from: Sony, Panasonic, and higher-end brands like Magnetar and Reavon, which stepped in after Oppo. This physical media dying nonsense needs to stop. Keep up the great content! Two thumbs up!

When you spend your hard-earned money buying an entire series and episodes, seasons, or sometimes an entire series just vanishes, it absolutely matters. I still have over 1000 digital titles, and the only time I buy digital now is when it's not available on any other format and on sale for a low price. My physical library is over 1300 and growing. IMHO, physical media will never die if for no reason than people want to “own a piece” of the stories they love.
The market might contract at times but probably not go away.
Big movie studios may eventually stop releasing physical media, but, I agree with you, they aren’t going to leave cash on the barrelhead. They are likely to source their media to boutiques. I think overall boutique companies put more love and care into their releases. And usually it is quite high quality.
Even if the major electronics companies stop making players, I would expect the boutiques to consider entering that market so they can continue to sell the media itself.
PS- chase, did you miss my walls of text? :P.
Work has been crazy, but I should(for better or worse) be commenting more.

By all accounts, they are selling well. Physical media and the hardware to play them on is alive and well! Also, look at all the new cd players that were released this year alone!

Im a huge physical media collector with over 6000 blu rays/dvds/4ks. But even I'll acknowledge that physical media is rapidly becoming niche and very expensive. Yeah technically physical media will still around, but itll price out the vast majority of people. Funny, the last LG player I bought was over a decade and a half ago. It would not play physical media until weeks later after a firmware update. I replaced it with an Oppo player - a boutique brand suggested by audiophiles because it also played all sorts of discs and was very reliable. Oppo's leaders also misread the market when they decided to exit and focus on their phone manufacturing.
I have yet to replace the Oppos with a 4K disc player because I need to upgrade other equipment first. Meanwhile, I found a Zidoo player that will play my discs bit for bit to my old equipment yet somehow make it look as intended.
At some point, I will get with the times, but I will continue to collect physical media because it is better than streaming in every way. The point is, people have been calling for the death of physical media for a long time but it is streaming that is not so healthy.

I wonder if Blu Ray would become more niche? Hard to say. Look at LP's and their huge resurgence! With digital songs and streaming, LP's are doing amazing! Plus CD sales are starting to take off! And Cassette tapes are making a little comeback! So saying Blu Ray is on death's bed is a little premature. I love Blu Rays and still buy them! But most people that see my movies think it's awesome and always say something like "so when are we gonna have a movie night". Nobody ever says "Oh you have Netflix? When are we having a movie night?". lol

100% that is a big part of the issues with the anti-physical media crowd...it is like it makes them uncomfortable that we own something they dont so they want to belittle us to make themselves feel better...and streaming will never bring people together and have nostalgia to it like physical media!

I actually feel like we are in a very interesting "turn-around" point in media history. What I mean by that (and I've thought about this FOR YEARS) is I think more people like myself are finally appreciating physical media. I'm 42, and I think a lot of people in my generation who never were physical media collectors, we are starting to shift that. I don't think it's just me, and the reason I say this is because I think the streaming stuff that began with Netflix, and then Hulu, Paramount and all the other streaming stuff, I think it's FINALLY ran its freaking course. I could be wrong, but I will list reasons for why I think people are tired of streaming more now than in past recent years.
    1. Censorship: it's one big thing that got my attention in the past few years. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and the "woke" culture and everything that followed really WOKE me up. I studied and have my bachelors in history and I know what canceling anything does...it actually does the opposite of what it intends to do and creates a backlash. The PC stuff simply defeats the purpose of movies and art, telling a story.
    2. Costs: Netflix raised their prices a few years ago so I dumped it. Hulu has too, but not that bad. I had Peacock until they raised their prices. I am tired of streaming stuff, for the most part and I simply won't pay more for most of it. I have cable at home, and I have Hulu and that's it...and just this past Friday I signed up with AMC+ because of certain movies they have AND I have access to Shudder which means I get Joe Bob Briggs. Honestly, Joe Bob had more to do with me signing up with AMC+ (I was a big MonsterVision fan in highchool), but the movies played a role too. Oh, and I had Disney+ for a hot minute, but cancelled within a week, it simply wasn't worth it.
    3. Movies, expensive and Hollywood gone crazy: I have been fine with going to the movies for the past several years, even though there is streaming stuff. But I am finally tired of both, for the most part. Movies are also expensive and I think Hollywood has sort of gone crazy. The politics is too much for me. And there's so much foreign influence from what I understand, the film quality simply isn't there for me. I recently watched a movie from 1927 called Wings and I was blown away by the aerial film shots which were shot by multiple cameramen in various airplanes filming other airplanes above the clouds from a very long distance away. It was beautiful and REAL. As a whole, the factor of Hollywood is just sort of a turnoff for me in a lot of ways.
    4. Cost and Quality: In the long-run, the cost of physical media really IS worth it. The quality is better too, especially for horror movies. Having a home theater system that you care about really is worth it. I feel like Horror is the PERFECT genre for this entire topic, because it's meant to scare you, it's mean to be obscene, and it's meant to a B movie friendly culture which I think allows for more artistic creativity. I think watching Joe Bob Briggs on MonsterVision really allowed me to see this, back in my highschool days. He was always so unfiltered and loved showing those B movies, and he was so knowledgeable. He still is. I am actually writing Joe Bob a fanmail letter this week and sending it to him, I remember wishing I had done this in highschool, and now I have a second chance to do it. I want to tell him how much I appreciate him and everything he taught me.
So, in all, after years of jumping around from this streaming app and then to the next, I personally am tired of it. I'm tired of the Hollywood crap. I'm tired of the censorship. I'm finally going to start my own home theater collection and I'm starting with Horror and Westerns.

I will also add that Netflix dumping Chucky this past November played a role in this too. Meaning, the concept of having access to something and then it's suddenly taken away became very apparent. So I'm buying Chucky now! 😅 And everything being interconnected or possibly hacked played a role too! Physical Media is simply a safer route and better viewing quality.

I think you are 100% correct! this is like a Renaissance for physical media and more and more people are starting to notice!

@@AVAPopCulture I can't emphasize enough though, for someone like myself who has NOT been a collector over the years (I only have 4 DVDs to my name, although I just bought one more yesterday), a BIG BIG reason that I NOW want to start collecting is the Hollywood PC censorship in COMBINATION WITH what streaming has become. It's like it's all happening at the SAME TIME. Streaming is unraveling and turning into what cable has always been, AND the PC stuff over the past 5 or 6 years has really dumbed-down the BIG Hollywood industry. So, for me, it has led to me finding a channel with someone like yourself who understands this and speaks on it, and your explaining what I have been thinking. And it's led to me wanting to FINALLY invest in physical media. Probably why I always LOVED Joe Bob on MonsterVision going on his RANTS and speaking the truth. He was doing it back then too! Lol. He's good at explaining things. He's a national treasure, IMO. But, for me, to actually want to invest in physical media, trust me, it's a BIG deal. I never would have ever thought I'd be wanting to do it. I think since I work in the history field, I have seen this with politics too and history, so I might be more aware than some people to what is actually happening...and I love movies, so that could be part of it. But again, it's those two key things happening at the SAME TIME that inspired me. The Netflix dumping Chucky was the icing on the cake.

@@AVAPopCultureI also only have an interest in buying physical media that falls under 3 genres and 1 special category: Horror, Western, and Sci-Fi. The special category would be pre Hays Code movies. I have no interest in Rom-Coms, comedies, holiday movies, musicals, dramas, thrillers, dark comedies. I will buy according to the genres of Horror, Western and Sci-Fi, and the pre Hays Code movies. I want more of a cinema experience and not a casual movie experience. 💀🤠👽🎥

@@AVAPopCultureSci-fi and pre Hays Code movies are part of my key interest for purchases, along with the Horror and Westerns. There's a lot of genres I have no interest in spending money on. But those four are good ones. 👻👽🤠🎥

Totally agree with your comments about LG. As long as there are Panasonics, Samsung, Sony etc - nothing to worry about. I have bought a backup machine as well just in case. I certainly do not want to rely on streaming (though I do watch some things that sadly probably never end up on physical media). and prefer bluray / 4K any day. I also daydream about setting up a boutique bluray label and release all my favourite quirky films from the 60s and 70s, probably will need that lottery win for that one though (clearly it can be done as there are a decent number of labels releasing the odd film here and there)

They did the same thing when Bestbuy decided to quit selling physical media, collectors started be panic as usual. It's never going to die guys, these studios are still selling DVDs to this day even though blu-ray is far superior. There'll be manufacturing new bluray players or a new electronic company will In the future.
